Why not just set the machines to auto-download the updates? I believe you can set the time that each machine does that, so that it happens at midnight or early morning.
You can also check into HF Netcheck Pro, I am not sure if that requires a server class WinBlows install or not.
If Internet access is a problem, configure a proxy server to only allow the machines to access the windows update servers which are always the same address.
