As you say Barry, the pistol grip addition was done by someone with a lot of skill. In a way it balances the look of this rifle really nicely, to my eye.
I think the rear sight is a later model, taken from a post-1919 rifle.
It sounds like the piston seal needs some attention although I have had a few vintage BSAs that show very little sign of compression during the "tap up" test, yet somehow generate quite good velocities when a pellet is involved!
