I have used a rod but get cleaner results using phone jumper wire folded in half and a patch in the fold of the (soft plastic coated wire)and use paraffin to clear muck.
I also have tap closed no compression issues. The tap and barrel numbers on my CS match but I wonder if there should be a bearing, pivot pin or such like between the inside of the tap and the inside of the barrel as there appears to be machined hollows in both parts. I doubt its the washer as this tap loss occured with both the old and the replacement washer.
