I was poking around the GTHL website and came across this rule change that was passed in June, presumably effective immediately or, if not, effective starting at the end of this season. I have included the summary below; if I understand it correctly, it means that teams that sign players early on will be "stuck" with those players until the beginning of October unless the player wants to leave earlier, making it more difficult to replace those players since, one would think, any suitable replacements will have signed elsewhere prior to October 1st. It should reduce the number of instances where a team signs and then gives up on a player prematurely, or at least that is the intent. It may also make teams think twice about signing too many players too quickly.
This change provides that a Club would be precluded from releasing a player prior to October 1, unless the release is mutually agreed. This would prevent a player from being signed by a Team and then cut(and frequently replaced by a player who the coach considers to be “better”) even before the first player has had an opportunity to attend a pre-season camp or practice or play games with the Team. When the player signs, he or she is committing to the Team for the full Season. There should be at least a reasonable period of time when the Team is likewise committed and must endeavour to work with the players they have signed before making changes.
