MM year probably not the best yr to be playing HS hockey. Can not commit to a FULL season of HS games. |

any truth to the statement that
"if a player incurs a suspension of 3 games while playing HS hockey, he cannot return to AAA action until he has missed 3 HS games which occur 1 game per week or two= a 3-6 week suspension"
???? |

Whether the player is AAA or below, another sport is usually a good idea during the highschool years, but preferable not hockey |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 1 2011, 4:12 PM |
I really don't think the AAA player in MM should go to school at all. It just makes no sense to let it get in the way of hockey. The kids in HS are all just jealous and might want to hurt that AAA superstar in another sport or worse bruise his ego. You need to protect yourself from all those distractions. |

Ok, let me rephrase......do any teams have rules around players playing high school sports and AAA hockey?? |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 2 2011, 10:00 AM |
don't AAA players get enough ice time already...maybe a day off for school work would be good! |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 2 2011, 10:05 AM |
a HS coach would take a AAA player anytime even if it was somewhat limited do to schedules. High school hockey is right after school usually done by 5 so what kind of major conflicts are we talking about? Its the AAA coaches that dont want those boys getting hurt at HS hockey. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 2 2011, 10:07 AM |
Some teams don't allow their AAA players to play HS hockey in case of injuries. Generally, the team and coaches make the decision. Some allow their players to play HS hockey but not on AAA game nights and as long as it doesn't conflict. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 2 2011, 10:07 AM |
Understood, so what "RULES" are AAA coaches putting in place with regards to their players participating in high school sports? |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 2 2011, 10:17 AM |
Last year my kid played both AAA and HS hockey, but there were a lot of conflicts because they do have school tournaments on the weekends and at night. Plus my kid wasn't allowed to store his hockey bag anywhere at school during the day, so we couldn't just drop it off with our son in the morning and then pick him up after practice, but had to drive it over to the school (or wherever) everytime they were on the ice - a REAL pain in the butt and with having to already drive all over the place for the AAA team - it was just too much.
This year, My kids AAA coach did mention that he didn't want them playing HS hockey, but it wasn't a RULE... |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 2 2011, 10:27 AM |
Actually, since a lot of kids are terrified of getting benched by their coaches, maybe it was a RULE!!
Either way, I must admit I kinda pushed my kid to not play HS hockey, but I'm just a lowly hockey mom/chauffeur, so it's not like he always does what I tell him, if he really wanted to play, I'm sure he would've I did encourage him to try out for the Track team though |

My kid's MM AAA this year...
Since he signed up with the MM AAA team first that's where his after school priorities lie. HS is nice if he could fit it into his schedule however there's a lot of pressure on him right now to get good grades first, then comes hockey. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 2 2011, 12:03 PM |

There are some very good HS teams in and around Toronto particularly in York Region. Teams have many AAA calibre players and some older AA players and even the odd A player. It is decent hockey and fun for the kids. You also avoid much of the BS of Rep hockey. Not sure why anyone would be against a kid playing HS. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 4 2011, 2:26 PM |
It is strange in Toronto, guess some of the bigger centres have this oddity? My AA son plays against his teamates often, even against a linemate that attends another school. Kids love that, really chirp one another.
All of the BS in rep hockey is in HS hockey also, some areas even worse. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 4 2011, 3:09 PM |
2:06pm My son goes to school in Halton, doesn't play HS hockey but does play AAA rep hockey.
Most of his teammates played last year but won't this year. Too much goonery for their liking. My son didn't play as he felt he had enough on his plate with school and AAA hockey. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 5 2011, 4:45 PM |

|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 7 2011, 5:05 PM |
How many games do they play? How many practices? |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 8 2011, 2:14 PM |
depends on the coach. Go to Mount Carmel and the ST organization and your on the ice 6 days a week, regular schools usually once a week for a practice about 1.5 hours in total and then a game or two a week. Not a crazy schedule. |
|

|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 8 2011, 2:37 PM |
$200 -$400 is reasonable for HS Hockey. Schools get a discount on ice (non-prime time) and including practices are on the ice about 15-25 times during the year.
Best deal in town. Quit Rep and play solely HS hockey. |
|

Basic Hockey Canada rules, but not sanctioned by any governing hockey body, therefore anything goes, with no significant problems created if a player gets tossed from a game or hurts another player. |
|

Significant problems like three games for a season ending hit to the head or check from behind?

If you are a AAA player, HS hockey is sloppy and slow, but as an individual, you could dominate. For A players, it's better hockey than they are used to. Basically, it's fun hockey for the kids. Yes, there is a risk of injury, but my kid thinks it's a blast so I've let him play. No pressure and not as serious as league play and plenty of accolades from the ladies! |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 10 2011, 9:43 AM |
Right, thats why the AAA kids play so they can show off |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 10 2011, 9:48 AM |
Show off? Watch some highschool hockey and you will see the big difference between a, aa and aaa. The AAA kids don't show-off, they dominate. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 10 2011, 9:50 AM |
I played AAA growing up and joined the High School team also.
Some HS take it a lot more serious than they should but for my school it was one practice a week and one game with a few tournaments. It was honestly just a breath of fresh air to play hockey where the parents weren't yelling at their kids from the stands, didn't have to be at the rink getting ready an hour before.
In my opinion it's a good opportunity for AAA kids to realize why they love the game in a more relaxed atmosphere. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: High School sports and AAA | November 10 2011, 9:58 AM |
9:50 - bang on! My kid thinks it's a blast and totally gets that it's nowhere near the level that he's used to playing, but he enjoys playing with his school buddies, and looks forward to playing against his club mates. |
|

Totally agree. My son is a D on a AAA team, does his job, takes it seriously & loves it. He also plays HS and has a blast, takes more risks, has more of an opportunity to get creative offensively & has some laughs. He loves both but for different reasons. |

There's no question that high school hockey is fun and not that expensive compared to rep hockey. The real problem is finding the time. Between AAA hockey and homework there usually isn't a lot of spare time left. Throw in school practices and games and the schedule really gets hectic. |

Some of these teachers played hockey in University/College.
The coach of my sons high school team, played at Princeton. He got a scholarship and ended up as a math teacher. My son is in the OHL now, as a defence man, but at the time he was playing AAA, and it was too much of a hassle. The practices overlapped etc. I hated not being able to bring your bag to school, they yelled at my son because some temp secretary let him keep it in the office, even though he knew he wasn't allowed. My wife was working all day, I was out of town. |

High school's hockey skill level is average at best. Anyone could make the team. There is no competition. I rather have my kid go to the movies in his free time than waste time playing high school hockey. He's learning nothing from it, time lost. |
