No, the way of winning US style is alive and well. Wilkes-Barre is over half-russian, coached by a russian, with a couple Cdn kids, too. Not exactly "US hockey".

Europe and Russia teach skills first then body contact. Canada teach's Don Cherry hockey first. Go watch a minor Atom practice anywhere and see how much skill teaching is going on. All about winning for the coach so he can keep his spot and kid on the team for next year. Get the puck up the boards, get it deep, that is what is being taught.

Canadian hockey puts size first, aggression second and skill third.

Let's put this into perspective...the US teams consist of players the from the State which they reside or so we beleive. The CDN teams consist of players from the cities and to some extent surrounding areas.
The fact that the CDN teams do as well as they do is an accomplishment that the US kids could never acheive.

Consider selecting the best 15 skaters and 2 goalies from the province of Ontario and then go play in the SS...I'll bet the farm the US teams wouldn't have a chance. The Ontario team would make the US kids look like a bunch of house leaguers.

Only the Marlies assembled their team from all over Ontario. No leadership, no team.

American who moved to Canada in the recent few years. I have been in AAA on both sides. You are not comparing apples to oranges, there are no boundaries in the US are able to select kid from all around the US to play for your so called local team. If Canada did that, the US wouldn't be close. With that being said, the US National program is making strides compared to Canada. All the kids in Ontario care about is the OHL, with is a horrible path unless you are drafted in the first 2 rounds.

Agreed. U.S teams rosters change every tourny depending on who they can recruit. USNDP was making great strides in developing players a few years ago but recent world jrs show that has gone off the track and more and more US players are going to the CHL and foregoing their scholarships. More leaving every year from their NCAA teams and going to CHL and then US doesnt pick them for their rosters. There is no right answer apart from dont let your 16 or 17 year old get on a CHL game sheet because then there are no options.

Wilkes Barr Scranton but is it controversial as they have 5 Russians on the roster as well as a Russian coach. Birth dates are in question.

this was the most poorly run tournamnet i have been at in years.

this year marked the 50th anniv of the Silver Stick in Port Huron. thye have been doing this for 50 years-you think they would have figured out how to schedule a fukkin tournament by now. every single game we played was delayed by a least one hour!

what a joke.

JRC won 3 of 4 games and didnt advance to the qtrs.

Barrie Colts only lost one game all weekend and beat Chicago mission.

York Simcoe Express only lost one game all weekend to St Louis #1 USA Ranked(3-2).

Whitby Wildcats only lost one game all weekend

Mississauga Rebels only lost one game all weekend

none of these Canadian teams made it into the qtr finals but just as easily could have. I am sure none of these teams feel too bad about the state of Canadian hockey

exactly.

the results could have gone either way. i wouldnt read too much into the Port Huron Bantam silver stick. it certainly is not the measure of our nations hockey present or future sucess.

If we recruited players from across the entire province and put together an all star team like the US does, we would walk away easily as the winners.

Canada 5 USA 1

"After dropping their opening game 4-3 to Russia, Team Canada bounced back in a big way, holding the US to one goal in a 5-1 victory at the 2012 Youth Olympic Games."

See what happens when your best kids play ours. You're not as good as you think USA.

I agree with 9:53am tourny was a bit poorly run one game was delayed until 11 oclock at night finished around 12:30 or so in the morning by the time these poor kids got back to there hotel and in bed must have been around 3 in the morning then had to get up and play again that morning

Tsk tsk excuses excuses ... blame the russians, blame the game time, blame the hotel, blame the food, blame the altitude, blame co2 content in the atmosphere. God forbid any of you could ever admit that your GTHL kids failed to produce on the whole. Shrink some of those egos and then perhaps we'll see some hard work and decent hockey.

I would have to agree that for such a high-profile tournament, it's not very well run. Is it just me, or does anyone else think that closing all of the highway on and off ramps to and from the rinks made it tough to get around?

Re: Canada Gets Schooled at 97AAA Silver Stick

the tournament was poorly run. Games being delayed on day one (chiller went down in oen rink) was understandable - but the communication thereof was despicable. The second day onward was a disgrace.

The SS is supposed to be a premier event. It seems to have taken on a houseleague feel

12.04 The Ohl is not the answer unless you are drafted in the top 5 rounds and even then most will just end up in jr. b or c. Scholarship is the way to go.

Oakville only loss 1 all weekend too...to Shattucks w 28 seconds left. So what? Ya gotta win out to advance.

So for all these people blowing the horns of Canadian teams, who cares. Just say congrats to Wilkes Barre/Ukraine and be done with it.Who cares if these U.S. teams are 'regional' teams. You gonna tell me the GTHL teams arent 'regional? The Marlies, JRC, Titans, Vaughan, etc. all have kids from all over. They all work around the import rules. Brampton's kids are from Oakville. Oakville has kids from Waterdown and Mississauga. No one is 'pure' here... its just how far you choose to draw from.

Give it a rest. Just play and do your best kill all the b.s. of where players are from. If these coaches can convince kids to come to their team, good on 'em.

5.06 my understanding was that being drafted in the OHL gives you some kind of education package - or is this not the case - I can't really find much information on this so would appreciate info

So do you have to be a regular player in the OHL team, or just drfted? If my kid is a low pick, does he still get financial assistance for education?

Tell your kid to study hard and if he's any good at hockey to work towards a scholarship. The OHL treats the players horribly and the drafts must go to school in the city where they play hockey. Might not be a good fit.

Doesn't the GTA have a population of more than 5 million?

January 17 2012, 9:33 AM

With all the money the parents in the G spend on hockey, I think that there is an expectation of results. That there are Russian kids on Scranton should be of no concern, we have Canadian kids. If we blame the results on the fact that there are Russians on the other team, maybe we should revise our strategy and adopt some of their methods... back to the drawing board.
That they have drawn kids from elsewhere shouldn't be a big deal, the population base alone in the GTA should be an equalizer.
Birth dates in question? sounds like a load of baloney. bad scheduling? it probably affected all the teams...
