You can't win in the playoffs the way he wants them to play, he proved that with the Sharks. Last night they outscored their mistakes, that doesn't happen in the playoffs.

My point is that they have a young defence that will make mistakes. If you look at the body of work for this season, particularly goals against the defence has been improving. Are they perfect, no. But they are getting better.

It is not logical to crap all over Wilson when they are losing, and then not give him any credit when the team does well.

But the one area they are not getting better is the defensive zone, it's like a fire drill at times. They are masking that problem by having to play in their own end as much the last few games. The one time they did, late against Pittsburgh, they coughed up a big lead. And don't expect that to not be exposed against the better teams come playoff time.

Look, I agree with you that this is a young team that is improving but it's not like Wilson has earned any undying loyalty and if you look at his track record what makes anyone think that he is the one who will take us to the next level. We have waited long enough.

Obviously, being a Leaf hater stems from all the years of team mediocrity, however, even the harshest of Leaf haters will have to concede that any team in the NHL (including our beloved buds) could, at some point, compete for a championship.
Are the Leafs at that point yet? Probably not, but give them credit for at least showing signs of heading that way.

The contract extension he got was a parting christmas present from a friend knowing full well that he would be letting him go and he gets looked after (still in the money) at the same time. MLSE has more money than God, so firing him even with an extension is a no-brainer. That may come down the road and given what Burke and company have done to re-build the depth and talent in this organization from the Ferguson days, I expect they will make the right decision vis a vis the coach.

Defensively, the leafs are still a work in progress. Right now offence and the play of both goalies has carried this team for the most part.
Should Burke decided to trade, he should refrain from acquiring any help up front and simply focus on trading for a proven, tough, stay-at-home style D.

Their young D men will same day develop into legitimate NHL stars. Jake Gardiner in particular reminds me of a young Borje Salming who never seems to panic. Lupul and Gardiner – STEAL OF THE SEASON!

I agree. The Edmonton game was run and gun, entertaining yes, but that will not be effective in the playoffs no matter who you meet. I think most Leaf fans agree that there is playoff calibre talent on this team now, we need a coach who can 'entertain' us into May not just get us into the playoffs to get slaughtered.

Wilson is getting out-coached every game. Players are winning the games for him using their speed and skill. Goalies have played good enough but not great. When is the last time you seen an in game adjustment or line juggling during a game to counter opposing teams?

May have a playoff team but no playoff coaching. They would get killed in a physical series and dont have the ponies or the coaching to adjust.

Sending Kadri to the minors was his biggest mistake the Leafs have made, they have not been the same since he went down, they really miss his grit toughness and leadership skills and his willingnwss to drop the gloves to back up his teammates is really missed. His 7 goals in 55 games is also missed and would have been usefull in the playoffs. Dumb move by Wilson.

WIlson did not make any adjustments is my point. If they had a coach that knew how to adjust and develope young players, they may not just make the playoffs but actually make some noise there.

2) The jets took us to the boards, how did Wilson comensate?

5) Special teams a huge part of the NHL PP is now running at 0.050 in the last 40 attempts.

Burke has had this team for what will be 5 seasons at the end of this one, with Wilson as his coach for the last four seasons. If they can't get it done this year both should be wacked.

You are right on Burke and this is not his fifth season, it was Fletcher that brought in Wilson wasn't it?

As for the penalty killing, has it really improved? The numbers say so but killing one penalty a night is not the same as killing 4 or 5. They have been more disciplined but they are also soft, is the trade off worth it?

The defensive zone system he wants is a disaster and is very frustrating to watch. He is to blame for that. I will agree that firing him at the end of the season is OK as long as we don't trade somebody who maybe hasn't played as well under him but that we would want down the road under a new coach. That is my biggest fear, not missing the playoffs, because there pieces of a really good team here.

Personally, I do agree the Leafs are "soft" and my all accounts management knows this and are trying to rectify it. The issue is no doubt the targeted players are currently too expensive.

I'd rather wait than over-pay. The Leafs have players coming through the system such as Colborne, Devane, Biggs, Ross et al who hopefully will turn out to provide more grit that is required.

This team has alot of the same types of forwards, ultimately a re-jigging of that mix will be of significant help!

Whether they make the playoffs this year or not to me is irrelevant as they are not a Stanley Cup contender as constituted anyway.

I would rather wait than over pay also. In fact, if the big name guys that everyone mentions, Getzlaf, Staal, etc., are not available then I would trade some excess bodies for picks. When everyone is healthy there are too many.

I still think Colborne should have been here all year as a third line centre and MAYBE move up next year instead of in the minors and then force him into first or second line next year. Look what Philly did with Giroux. I also think Frattin and Aulie should have been here all season.

Playing tons of minutes in all situations on a good Marlies team that will hopefully go deep in the AHL playoffs will do them good.

Getting spot duty on the big club will not be as beneficial.

The more you look at the history of most NHLers the more you recognize the AHL is a great primer for a career in the NHL. Detroit is THE blueprint for this philosophy. I know of a kid drafted by the Red Wings last draft, Sproul His parents were told don't even think about seeing your son in the NHL until probably 4-5 years. Not a slight, just reality. Takes time to become a pro.

As long as they get that time when they do come up, let them start on the third line where there isn't the pressure to produce offence every night.
