U16 OHL development camp

Anyone who's kid was there last year have any reasonable commentary? I don't need the "cash grab" BS thanks, just wondering if the program is worth attending.

My kid really enjoyed it. Good value for the money I thought.

The only part I didn't like was the heavy sales job from the OHL clubs, but that wasn't all that bad.

Some good info sessions, good hockey, good coaching.

Not saying it's life changing, but I'd go again.

I have had 3 boys go into the program. You said it cash grab, wont help your kid get drafted, wont help your kid make under 18/20's, But it does fund the hockey programs. If you are a real top 15 in Ontario, you dont need to attend. 4 centers with 4 teams, do the math.

If you do the math on what a player gets, cash grab BS is just nonsense. My son really enjoyed all parts of it and we were extremely glad we sent him. We would do it again.

I will tell you the spring/summer leading up to the Minor Midget year can be pretty expensive. Choose wisely. I would do this OHF Camp again, then dryland program and skating but that's it.

We also did some spring hockey, which in hindsight should have passed on. It's almost like people see a dollar sign on your forehead because you're a minor midget AAA dad.

Good luck.

My son attended last year and absolutely loved it. He was really glad that he went. Great experience. But not all kids get to go. There are only so many spots and some of the kids on my sons team did not get the invite. So it is not a gimme that you will get in. If you do, definitely go!

It's not by invitation, it's a draw from among those who apply, see the ohf website.

correct, a random draw. but limited, unfortunately, to AAA players. Short sighted move by ohf. should at least include AA.

OP here;

Is it really a random draw? Do they not consider the talent pool and make sure that the better players get the nod?

I found the odds of getting in were greatly diminished if you applied towards the end of the deadline, based on who I spoke with anyway....

If your son gets in then people say it's by invite. If your son doesn't get in then they say it's a random lottery. Not sure anyone here knows how they pick. I would think they try to get representation from every team and use the stats and position to make choices. I think even the top teams will have kids that don't make it through just because they want to spread the wealth.

If anyone has actual language on this please share it.

Had a son who went through it a few years ago and one now. Previously it was apply with your money and first ones in get a spot. Now they collect all the apps and place AAA as priority and if there are too many then they will weed out a few but still better than what it was and worth the effort.

If your kid is a top 3 forward or top 2 d on your team then they will get in if they apply. OHF wants the best kids to pick the U16 from so they won't put the top kids in a lottery.

Re: U16 OHL development camp

Everyone eventually gets the letter. They go to all members 1997 birth year of the OHF. AA and A players get it also.

If you want your son to participate, getting the application in sooner than later may help his chances of being accepted. It is a lottery who ultimately attends.

For all you lazy asses, quotes from the OHF website:

All male players who were born in 1997 and are carded to a team registered within the OHF in the
season for which they are applying to participate in the program are eligible to apply. Priority will be given to players who are playing at the AAA level. Players are only eligible to participate in the program once.

A random lottery selection process will be used to determine which players are registered. Players will be grouped and a certain amount of players will be chosen from each group. There are parameters in place to ensure that each participating OHF Member Partner (ALLIANCE, GTHL, NOHA, OMHA) has a certain number of players participating in the program.

If you want more than that, go look it up yourself.

No mention of a lottery.

It was under the FAQ.http://www.ohf.on.ca//web_doc/gen_pdf/2012_u16_faq_1.pdf

Next time be more clear. BTW it sounds like the registration process is a lottery and then they select from there. So if your lucky enough to get registered, then how do they select you? I think I'm right in my interpretation.

Who is eligible to apply for the 2012 Program?

Players - All male players who were born in 1997 and are carded to a team registered within the OHF in the
season for which they are applying to participate in the program are eligible to apply. Priority will be given to
players who are playing at the AAA level. Players are only eligible to participate in the program once.
Coaches – Any coach currently registered within the OHF who is coaching a team within the OHF in 2011-12
or will be coaching a team within the OHF in 2012-13. Coaches must be NCCP and Speak Out certified.
Trainers – Any trainer currently registered within the OHF who is the trainer for a team within the OHF in the
2011-12 season or has previous experience and anticipates being a trainer in the 2012-13 season. Trainers
must be HTCP and Speak Out Certified.

What is the player registration process?

Players - A random lottery selection process will be used to determine which players are registered. Players
will be grouped and a certain amount of players will be chosen from each group. There are parameters in
place to ensure that each participating OHF Member Partner (ALLIANCE, GTHL, NOHA, OMHA) has a
certain number of players participating in the program.
Coaches and Trainers – Staff will be selected in consultation with Member Partner staff and references as
deemed necessary.

The politically correct way is to "say" it is done by a random lottery......................Reality is they want the best players there hence the " priority will be given to AAA players."

Re: U16 OHL development camp

February 14 2012, 1:09 PM

Right, but there are AAA players and there are AAA players. Do the Marlies get the same number of players admitted as the Timmins Eagles (not picking on anybody, but those are the top and bottom rated teams this week)?

One would think that the organizers would want to load up on the best available talent, rather than be politically correct and apply a socialistic bent to the process.

Re: U16 OHL development camp

February 14 2012, 1:22 PM

My son is a 96 and we went to Barrie last year. Great event, we had our son dropped off first day and we only showed up to the last day on Sunday. He really enjoyed it.

As far as "best" players that was not the case. As far as I could tell it was a mixed bag of kids, almost all AAA from GTHL, OMHA and Alliance centres. Don't think we saw any Ottawa area or Northern ON kids as they most likely selected those camps being closer for them.

What was interesting was watching some of the really elite kids play on a mixed team of players, without the supporting cast they normally have.

At the end of the day, level of player is irrelevant. It is a learning weekend to get some understanding re options as far as the OHL, nutrition, education, training, etc.

Good points. It was a great experience and also an opportunity for them to tell you how great the OHL is for your kid. I get the sense they are afraid of losing players to NCAA. Probably the same reason they have moved up the draft date to April 7 from May.

When will I know whether I have been registered for the program?
Players and staff will be contacted via email at a date which is to be determined. Some players/staff may be
contacted at a later date if those registered are unable to participate.
Players will be required to confirm their registration by submitting payment by the deadline date, which will be
determined once the application period closes.

All AAA kids get a letter invitation to apply. From my experience last year, not all kids (or parents) thought it was worth going, so they didn't apply. But ALL kids get the letter. My kid applied and was accepted and he was really glad that he went. He had a great time and still talks about it. I have to laugh at the stupid parents that thought it was just a money grab and didn't send their kids. Yet they think that spending 7,000-10,000 for crappy coaching every year isn't a money grab!

My kid was there and loved every minute of it. I was there to watch the games and attend seminars and they were great. Yes I saw scouts there and the coaches were "O" coaches. We're they scouting - maybe, maybe not. Either way the weekend was a priceless experience for the boys who attended! Funny though, all the parents who thought getting a letter about the camp made them feel one step closer to being drafted...

This was the best hockey I have watched. Vaughan camp provided great games.
Worth the price. Not one individual team stood out.
Teams were balanced.
Great experience.

Re: U16 OHL development camp

April 30 2012, 10:52 AM

My son was at the Vaughan camp and I attended much of it as well. He enjoyed it but wasn't over the top ecstatic about it. He met some new people, got exposed to some things he hadn't heard before. Some stuff was old news. The OHL coaches were good and it’s nice they got to see the boys first hand. Maybe they will file a name or two in the back of their mind for next year.

To be truthful, I have seen better spring hockey in tournaments in the past. I think the pool was a bit watered down - sorry to say. I guess that’s to be expected with 4 separate camps, people out of town, other tournaments going on, people who didn’t get it, etc.

Was it worth the $400+ for the weekend? I guess so. Not absolutely sure though.

My son was there and there was not even one AA kid on his team, nor did he hear of any on other teams. I saw the games and they were much faster and more enjoyable than regular season games. Talent was great and my son along with every other kid I spoke to loved it.

My comment above has nothing to do with showing off! Wow we're touchy! I was just stating what I saw. Sorry for giving my honest opinion. I never said my son had an advantage because of being there but he and all other kids who were there were very fortunate to have been there. Every kid out there was giving 110% which made the hockey very fast and enjoyable.

We were there, and I only know of one AA kid, although he was AAA the past few years. If there were any others, there were not many. My son thought it seemed a bit slower than usual. I personally thought the first game was a bit slow, but then it picked up pretty well for the next 2. Probably as kids became more comfortable with each other. My son enjoyed it, got a lot out of the nutrition and psychology seminars, playing with other kids, getting a few words from OHL guys. I'd recommend it.

Maybe playing AA next year but the boys there were based on where they played last season.

It's obvious this thread will keep getting negative posts from people who's kids didn't get in. Who cares! Why dwell on this? Let it go and enjoy the 'off' season and worry about hockey come August/September.

Some kids were definitely not AAA. I watched the green team and saw at least 3 kids; one in particular that would be challenged to make 'A' hockey. Watched the white team, and there were at least 3-5 kids that had no business there. But, I am sure they got to see some good hockey if not played it.

So what if there were a few AA players at the camp. I am sure there were AAA kids at the camp that will be playing AA next year too. Just relax and enjoy the last year or two of watching your boy play hockey. Unless you will still go and watch him play at 11pm in the beer leagues.

the Sports village in Vaughan was the wrong place to host this. it did not have the "feel" of an OHL rink or program.

the camps hosted in OHL cities on actual OHL rinks should have a much better feel to them.

My kid loved it. OHL coaches, OHL speakers, informative seminars on nutrition, sports psycology. Also a seminar by head coach of St. Michael's Major, assistant coach of Brampton Batallion, GM of Peterborough Petes about a typical day in the OHL and typical day at Canadian University by head coach of York University hockey. Good hockey and good mental preparation for the next level. Well worth the money.

Keep crowing about last years G crop. This year is different. Teh OMHA will dominate the first (and every) round. The Alliance has a bunch of quality kids as well. WEAK crop in the G. WHy do you think so many kids have left? The once mighty G is teh B league in the 97 age group. The reigning OHF champs (Marlies) won't even with the G this year.

U16 OHL development camp

May 6 2012, 7:17 AM

Very Good experience, we are in Ottawa currently and the information seminars on Nutrition, Drug awareness and Fitness are excellent. Kids have made a few new friends and have had some good Ice sessions and excellent Off ICe Dryalnad sessions run by the Ottawa Senators. Ottawa 67 s had Cocy Ceci come to a seminar and speak to the kids along with the Ottawa Head Coach, it was a very informative session on Education and expectations.
Food has been excellent and the kids have been looked after very well.
Only negative was the rostering of teams perhaps could have been more balanced for the exhibition games, other than that..it has been a fantastic experience that shows the kids there are a lot of good Hockey players out there.
And yes there are perhaps 1-10 AAA caliber players out of 80 kids here.

Well Done OHL..its been a Good weekend.

No, he's talking about an inferior camp in Ottawa. It's not like the 5 main camps, it's one for lower level players. The ones that went will tell you it's the same as the others; there are SOME parallels, but it's not like the real deal.

You people are jacked, Do you see all the things they get? You spend money on bullshit tournaments in the summer like "Prospects" in Toronto to get EXPOSURE and be in front of scouts. Here you get 6 total icetimes, underamour gear, nutrition advice, education advice, and most importantly SCOUTED and viewed by most OHL teams GUARANTEED~!

You would be stupid to think this to be a cash grab.
