Awesome game of tiddly winks! |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | February 21 2012, 3:02 PM |
Had a look at last years combine invites and the first 4 round of the draft. There were 44 kids not at the combines that were drafted in the first 4 rounds (11,1st; 8, 2nd; 10, 3rd; 15 4th) Just goes to show that not AA ranked players will attend. In fact a few boys at the combine were drafted in the 15th round, which probably reflects NCAA commitment. 23 boys were drafted between the 5 and 9th rounds But the range was from 15 through 1, with more than half between round 4 and round 10 BUT all kids at the combine were drafted except for a few Americans, which probably reflects NCAA or USHL commitments.
All this to say that if you do not get an invite its not the end of hockey as we know it, but if you do it is a big vote of confidence from the OHL. |

Most first and second rounders don't go to the combine because they may not show well and go down.
This opens the door for 20-25 other invites outside of the top 4 rounds .
I would think if you did not get a letter you are not projected to go in the top 5 rounds. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | February 21 2012, 3:21 PM |
Invitation to apply have already been sent out and boys need to reply by this Friday. Selected Invitees will by notified by Monday February 27th, unless (which is the case for most invitees) their team is still involved in playdowns for which they will only receive their invite when their team has finished their season (for some OHL Cup) |

lol. Ya Ekblad and Subban were at the combine last year. Sure glad they went in the 5th round. moron |

What's with the moron comment?
He didn't name players but indicated some first rounders didn't come? Unless your research proves otherwisae, I thought the stats were helpful.

Alot of first rounders wont go. Not all, but alot of them. They invite some odd kids, last year 2 players when undrafted. The year before a player from Guelph got an invite and went undrafted. If you see a name and say 'what', dont be shocked. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | February 21 2012, 3:36 PM |
So youre saying that if my kid got one he will be drafted early? Im rushing home to check the mail now. Or do they get it via email? |

I think the key word here is "projected" since there was quite a few boys drafted in 6,7 9 and 10th rounds. Again reflects what teams are looking for to fill gaps in the team and not just raw talent. Of the 24 goalies at the combine in 2011 5 were not drafted. |

The players drafted in the 6,7,9 and 10th rounds where the late minute adds. |

I believe that invites were sent to the top 100 skaters according to central scouting. Will take top 80 of those who say they will go. If less than 80 agree, extra invites will go out. Goalies a separate issue (as always!) |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | February 21 2012, 4:51 PM |
Wrong again,I know of 3 Whitby kids invited but only 1 is ranked in the top 100,so there goes that theory. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | February 21 2012, 4:54 PM |
Central scouting top 100 and your top 100 may be different! LOL |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | February 21 2012, 5:22 PM |
last year first rounders that didnt show were playing the school card or actually intending NCAA. (ie Max Domi, Bryson Cianfrone). Boys that do not wish to attend "that the OHL desire to" will be backfilled. That's it. |

So how is it that my son got a couple of OHL letters and invites but did not get an invite to this combine? Just looking for an explanation. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | February 22 2012, 2:31 PM |
and mine isnt even raked higher than 150, but he got one. no logic! |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | February 22 2012, 2:39 PM |
Just goes to show you that OHL Central Scouting compiles their draft rankings and each individual team comes up with their own. They will differ, moreso as the rounds go on.
My son is rated a C for the draft and I've been told some teams have him on their draft list, some don't. He received the standard OHL questionnaire but no teams have contacted us and no combine invite.
At this point, I could care less as he is pretty well a lock to play Midget next season. He continues to love the game and is looking forward to working hard in the off-season to get better.

Top 80 skaters and 20 goalies attend. If anyone cancels then overflow pool selected. Simple. It's not random. |

| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | February 29 2012, 10:26 PM |
Ok I'm not buying this '1st rounders won't go because they may not show well'. If you are worried about competing with same age players, then good luck when you go to rookie camp to try to make an OHL team. If I was an OHL scout, I would question a player's absence as lack of confidence and not ready. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | February 29 2012, 10:36 PM |
You may not buy it, but OHL teams have no issues. In the past two years very few first rounders attend...and wow, they are still drafted in the first round!!!!!
You may have your panties tied in a knot, but OHL teams seem to care less |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 1 2012, 6:42 AM |
Only 2 first rounders missed last year for very good reasons. Even Max Domi- who told the world he was going NCAA- was there extolling the virtues of the O and telling everyone what an honour it would be to play in the O. Member Clubs take it very seriously. The strength and conditioning tests, height/weight measurements can't be fudged:) |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 1 2012, 8:20 AM |
13 First Round players didnt show up in 2010, and shocingly, they where all
still selected in the first round! Gasp! I guess skipping it did them fine .
I highly doubt only 2 first rounders missed last year, lets see the list, I cant seem to find it. |

| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 19 2012, 9:46 AM |
As expected jealous parents ripping kids for being invited and justifying why others did not. No, not all kids go. For example, some of the 95's chose not to go last year cause they had advised they were heading NCAA route (true or not) and could not very well have been at the OHL Combine and claim still going NCAA. Grow up people. You better get meds ready for April 7th cause the same green parents on here over Cup and Combine will have meltdowns when they see the draft list. |

Great list, but a bit of bureaucracy!!!
How is that Whitby wins the OMHAs but only 1 player is invited to this OHL Combine.
UR Not gonna believe it, but I am not from this team, just stating the obvious. There are a few scoring leaders who should of probably should of been included in the invite, that's just too bad really! |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 21 2012, 1:52 PM |
List above reflects the top kids based on OHL scouts input, notwithstanding any that bail due to injuries or agent's advice to not go.....clearly, scouts felt only one Whitby kid deserved to be there. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 21 2012, 1:52 PM |
Correct, some kids turned down so maybe that is why not on it. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 21 2012, 2:20 PM |
Take a look at the previous years. Always 10-20 kids that dont get drafted and 10-20 kids that opt out. Good luck to all the kids there. |

That ol chestnut scout.ca ratings still got you sold eh? OHL Central scouting invited the top 80 skaters and there is a marginal run over to allow for players who were invited but won't, for whatever reason, attend.

For what it's worth on the Combine,
Under Armour sponsors the Combine , OHL could care less,
Under Armour does it as a way to promote their product, they hire guns to come in to do testing,
The OHL, likes the "show" aspect of the event, helps raise awareness of the OHL product. that being said, there is not alot of stock given to results,
Seeing some kids nose to nose helps a bit, but who really cares if player A can skate around some cone 1 tenth of a second faster than player B
give your head a shake, |

Its not the top players as per OHL Central Scouting. Here are the players rankings. There are players like Ho-Sang, McCann, Mekeon, Middleton, Dal Colle, Bennett, Hargrave, plus americans who are all rated AA. There are alot of A and B players not invited too.
Congrats to all the players invited, but dont play it up like its the top players.

| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 9:42 AM |
is there a list where it shows all the kids ranking as of now? and not just those at the combine? |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 9:43 AM |
Those ratings where as of last month.
Your missing the point. the point is that its obviously not the top kids for the draft. They invited EP players.
Good for the kids, I REALLY hope they turn heads and improve their draft stock, but take a peek at the past years draft and the Combine, youll find that the players who went there where drafted all over the map, and where not the top 80. Same, obviously, as this year. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 9:48 AM |
You can't compare last year's players to this year. After the top 10 last year, it drastically dropped off. (Yes a few bright stars in later rounds) Combine is very important this year for the OHL teams to rank their 2 - 5 round picks. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 9:51 AM |
The general consensus here is that the 96 age is a deep draft, particularly with forwards. The proviso though is that after the top 4-5 elite d-men the drop-off is pretty significant. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 9:59 AM |
Combine is very important this year for the OHL teams to rank their 2 - 5 round picks.
I would disagree with that statement.
Do you think that a team would draft based on pilon skating and 4-4 no contact games?
Homework has been done and draft order established from watching all year.
Did a good combine impact the NHL draft order?
No. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 10:00 AM |
Buddy, admit that your drafgt prospects are better if you are there rather than if you were uninvited. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 10:05 AM |
Unless a kid completely bombs, just being invited does alot for each player there, no doubt.
Good luck to all, I know my boy was pissed at not being asked. More fuel to the fire I say! |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 10:05 AM |
9:59, I didn't make that statement but I agree with it, in that it will help some kids.
I too don't place an over an emphasis on it impacting the top 20 or so, but beyond that if the kid performs like a beast during the combine it will catch attention.
just enjoy the experience because it is a pretty darn good event. better than the U-17 camps in my opinion. |

List must be old. My son is listed as a B but has had 4 visits, 5 phone calls and 5 letters. Three of the callers have told him he is an A. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 10:13 AM |
Don't kid yourselves. This is pure politics. The Agents try and talk up there low to mid rounders and get them to the combine. They are doing there jobs. Don't get me wrong 75% of these kids belong on the list but do you really think an OHL team that has an eye on a kid that is not a top 40 pick is going to tip their hand to the other teams and recommend that kid to go to the combine. No Way.
This is a great experience for the kids and they should be proud to have been chosen but it is by no means the top 4-5 rounds of the draft. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 10:16 AM |
i think the kids who received their invites in the original batch are the majority of the top 5 rounds of the draft. The kids who were accepted last week are the ones with the most opportunity to move up based on combine performance. |

Why are there so many players invited to the combine that have had no interest from teams/scouts, and are rated so low?
My guy is going so its not that I'm bitter, but I thought the idea was to invite the top players only and have them compete against each other. Doesnt look to be the case.
Whats the scoop about who is invited? |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 12:39 PM |
Why are they inviting kids rated B and C to this. There are a lot of better kids that aren't on the list for this event. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 12:52 PM |
I see a bunch of kids that IF they were being looked at before, are gonna fry themselves having to go through physical training as that is their weakness.

LOL. Your first reality check. The next is on April 7th. |

"My guy is going so its not that I'm bitter, but I thought the idea was to invite the top players only and have them compete against each other. Doesnt look to be the case. "
I posted links in the previous thread, showing the list from previous years. Its ALWAYS like this. Gotta do your research.
From Tigers on HF
OHL Central Scouting, with input from OHL teams. Most of the time teams will want to gather information about a player, and if enough teams make the inquary, he is added to the list. Its not the top 100 players rated for the draft, but a good start.

| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 1:17 PM |
I apologize on behalf of my B player for his invitation. I will make sure that he stays in the background and does not offend any of the real players that were invited. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 1:20 PM |
The correct answer actually is for him to take all the AA player numbers, and crank them through the wall.....hitting or no hitting. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 1:21 PM |
I think it is just kind of weird to see players rated C invited. If they are rated C they are probably not being drafted in the first 5 rounds or so. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 1:23 PM |
To be clear, the ratings quoted were mid-term, if you had followed the thread you would have seen a note about players ratings going up and down. Don't for a minute think some A rated players have not fallen also.
Notwaithstanding the ratings, phone calls, letters, etc. there will be quite a few negative surprises on april 7th. Happens EVERY year. Brace yourself. |

What about the kids that didnt get an invite? Thats not fair? What about the guy who keeps ripping into 97 'Blind Hate', thats not fair. What about the amount of people that rip on kids daily on here, thats not fair.
Its N54, I dont think anyithng about it is fair, that list is at least based on facts, not angry dads. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 1:52 PM |
Not fair? These are the kids they want to see. It is obvious the ranking list from last October is no longer valid and they are going by the not yet issued current rankings. |

my son is rated an A, he is going to the combine
We have had 4 visits to OHL cities, talked to GM and scouts, game and dinner
we received 7 personalized letters and 8 phone calls
that means 15 out 0f 20 team have shown allot of interest in my son
why is he still an A, just wondering?
Have other AA or A ranked players had this much contact? |

Interesting, no disrespect but I thought NCAA really only looking at AA at 16 years old. Congrats, my son also a C. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 2:54 PM |
Everyone really needs to settle down. You will know where you kid is going on April 7th. Invited not invited, it really does not matter. A B C ? in the end who really cares, dinners, phone calls etc, you never know. You will know then, so sit back relax, enjoy the weather and let April 7th come. It will be lots of upsets, joys and surprises all around. For the record, next door neighbours kid did not get invited to the Combine and went in the 3rd round? So there is not saying what is going to happen.
Just some advice from afar.
Good Luck to all the 96 boys. |

Agreed, but as long as the chatter is respectful it can also be informative. Thanks all, nice departure from the usual fare on this site.
Dito, good luck to all the boys both on April 7th and afterwards to those that are drafted and those who are not.....lots of hockey left if they want it! |

A comment regarding the list from OHL HF Boards:
From Tiger1992:
"Always an interesting mix of top guys and depth prospects. This year is better then the past two years as far as talent attending." |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 3:21 PM |
He goes on to explain how they are picked:
"OHL Central Scouting, with input from OHL teams. Most of the time teams will want to gather information about a player, and if enough teams make the inquary, he is added to the list. Its not the top 100 players rated for the draft, but a good start." |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 3:50 PM |
Does an agent or advisor help get a player invited to the combine?
Some selections just don't make sense. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 4:01 PM |
If the teams wants to see a player what doesn't make sense? |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 4:08 PM |
If a team wants to see a player more...it makes sense to me....??? |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 4:14 PM |
Our agenda didn't even know my son was invited. I don't think it is the agents. I suspect that part of the agent role is to bring attention to that player all season so maybe that would be how an agent is involved. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 22 2012, 4:15 PM |
Sorry, before the spelling police get upset - spelling mistake above. Meant to say our "agent". |

Who cares what "Tigers 92" or any other poster has to say. The above rankings only exist in the mind of an author at scout.ca and no more than that. OHL Central Scouting invites the players with no input from anyone. Teams can draft whoever they want whether or not they go to the combine. The event is an opportunity to get the top 80 skaters and 20 goalies in one place, put them through a battery of tests, let them have a little 4 on 4 and generally convince both them and their families to report when the time comes.
Simply amazing that people debate this. Will we still be debating this when the OHL puts out press tomorrow on their site that says the top 80 skaters and 20 goalies are at the combine?
Sadly, and knowing this forum, one of the first questions will be "how did so and so, only ranked an F by Central Scouting get invited to the combine?!" Incredible really, and no wonder they waited till the day before to release the rosters. |

Maybe once the interviews were conducted, the coaches realized they didn't want your dumb ass son. Anyone that was rated a C in November is not going to go up to an A or AA. Forget it. And why wouldn't they just invite the A and AA players? There are lots of them that are not on this "invite" list. Sounds really fishy to me. Something else is behind this and it has nothing to do with who is the top 100. It is more like who has the best agent or who has the most connections. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 23 2012, 12:48 AM |
How about who's kid is impressing who maybe...get a life no one owes you a combine, my so called C kid is in the combine because he's been tearing it up this year and he doesn't have an agent and he'a been contacted several times, so go throw your conspiracy theory out the window |

Details Announced for OHL Combine Powered by Under Armour
March 22, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Toronto, ON - The Ontario Hockey League today announced the details for the third annual OHL Combine powered by Under Armour which takes place March 23-25 at the Hershey Sport Zone and Iceland Arena in Mississauga, ON.
The program offers 16 goaltenders and 80 skaters the opportunity to showcase themselves both on and off the ice to OHL member team personnel with testing results distributed to every OHL Member Team General Manager to assist in their evaluation for the 2012 OHL Priority Selection to be held on April 7, 2012. Belleville Bulls' Goaltending Coach Sebastien Farrese will assist with special goalie-specific on-ice sessions, while off-ice drills will be conducted by Sport Testing.
Connor McDavid of the Toronto Marlboros is the only 1997-born player participating after recently being granted "exceptional player" status from Hockey Canada making him eligible for the 2012 OHL Priority Selection. All other players are 1996-born and include 64 players that competed in the 2012 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament with 10 members of the champion Mississauga Rebels participating including team captain and top scorer Robert Fabbri.
The 2012 event marks the fifth straight year that the OHL has hosted a skills development day for players and goaltenders in advance of the OHL Priority Selection. lol Just stir, stir, stir you jealous, bitter individual.
The only reason some players in the top 10 don't show is they know exactly where they are going already.
The above already know approx when they'll be selected- just not by whom yet. Every one of these kids has been contacted numerous times since the REAL rankings were released to OHL teams in Jan. by Central Scouting. They're not wondering where they'll drop at this point. Just to whom.
Get over it and wish them luck for christs sakes already. |

Yes, as you would infer they are interested in your son......man, some people just over-think stuff. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 23 2012, 8:07 AM |
how many kids would each team call |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 23 2012, 9:46 AM |
Nothing means anything until April 7. I know kids who received tons of letters, who had repeated phone interviews with interested teams and they didn't end up being drafted come the day. They are now playing Junior B. |

No you don't. Agree draft day is the finale but don't expect major changes or major movement in the top 80 skaters and 20 goalies at this point. Any agent that has been through this 20 times will tell you it just doesn't happen. 5 spots up or down perhaps but that's it unless school, injuries etc dictate otherwise. |

So whats wrong with that? These players just need more time to develop. Not getting drafted means they can decide where they want to play for the next 2 or 3 years. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 23 2012, 10:04 AM |
Agreed. Lots of hockey and development to go, for those who continue to love the game and work at it. |

The US kids and ont players dictating where they will report will change this draft and fast |

not really that much, drama queen. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 23 2012, 10:50 AM |
Teams already know which players of any nationality will report or not. When the list came out in Jan and everyone was contacted that was one of the first questions asked. Don't expect major surprises- unless your banking on a scout.ca prediction. |

Mississauga Rebels 2012 OHL Cup Champions
Friday, 23 March 2012 14:05
Like no other year, the 2012 OHL Cup was a story of two powerhouse teams working their way to face each other in a winner-take-all game.
The Toronto Marlboros and Mississauga Rebels were destined to face each other in the finals of the 2012 OHL Cup. Both were playing on the top of their game, and both teams were relatively unchallenged throughout the round robin and playoff games.
The finals of the OHL Cup lived up to its billing as the game of the year. The Marlboros took the play to the Rebels throughout the game, but a David Miller goal put the Rebels up 1-0 after 1. Led by the phenomenal goaltending of Liam Herbst, the Rebels looked set to win the game 1-0 before a pretty three-way passing play between Sam Bennett, Connor McDavid and Roland McKeown led to the Marlboros to tie the game up at 1. Once the game was tied, the Marlboros really looked to up their offensive pressure, and if it were not for some strong team defence, as well as the stellar goaltending of Liam Herbst, the game would have ended there.
Once overtime started, the game was a little more even, as the Rebels and Marlboros went back and forth for 8 minutes, before what seemed like a harmless shot by Michael Alvaro was misplayed, and he pounced on the rebound to beat goaltender Matthew Robson on the wrap around.
The tournament was a great way to cap off one of the better minor midget tournaments of the season, with players like Connor McDavid, Liam Herbst, Jared McCann and Joshua Ho-Sang showing off their ability, while players like Andrew Abou-Assaly stepped up their game.
The following is a detailed report of all prospects that played in the tournament, as well as some surprises, disappointments and top players.
Goaltenders
Brandon Halverson, Detroit Little Caesars Selects - Halverson really stood out for the Selects. He was strong in both starts, and showed all the tools that you look for in a goaltender at the next level. He was focused and composed in the face of a high amount of shots, and was very good positionally. He has a really high projectable skill set, and has put himself on the map for the OHL Draft.
Mark Sinclair, Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs - Sinclair struggled to find the grove that he had at the OMHA and SCTA tournaments in the past two weeks. He was caught cheating a few times and was not as tight against the post as he should have been. He’s more of a reflex goaltender who, when is on his game is hot, but struggles with consistency and focus at times.
Tynan Lauziere, London Jr. Knights - Lauziere played two games for the Knights, and looked good throughout the tournament. He was good positionally, and showed some good agility within the crease. He was not as aggressive in the crease as we would have liked to see, but got the job done. Was good in the Knights victory over the York Simcoe Express.
Liam Herbst, Mississauga Rebels - Hersbt was fantastic all tournament, and looked to be back on his game after a questionable GTHL Playoff run. He was focused and 'dialed in', displaying a really strong combination of positional play and agility within the crease. He was the main reason why the Rebels won the OHL Cup, and cemented his status as a first round pick, and the best goaltender in the OHL Draft.
Brent Moran, Ottawa Jr. 67's - Moran played well, and cemented his status as one of the top goaltenders available for the OHL Draft. He looked calm and focused under pressure, and was strong positionally. He was aggressive within the crease. He was strong in the 67's loss to the Mississauga Rebels, and has cemented his status as a top 3 goaltender for the OHL Draft.
Nicholas Hodgins, Ottawa Valley Titans - Hodgins was inconsistent for the Titans. In his three viewings, he was inconsistent with his focus and positional play. He let in a few weak goals and his body language displayed disappointment, and not confidence. Needs to continue to work on his positioning and tightening things up.
Matt Mancina, Sun County Panthers - Mancina played to expectations. He played every game for the Panthers, and at times kept them in games. He was at his best against the Toronto Young Nationals, showing really strong footwork and focus. He also was a little deep in his net at times. Should be one of the top five goaltenders for the OHL Draft.
Mathew Robson, Toronto Marlboros - Robson struggled with consistency this week. He was not tested much in the throughout the round robin, and when he was, he looked fairly solid. He struggled with his lateral movement and mobility throughout the semi-finals and finals. He would be best served to play for a team next year that will allow him to see a lot of shots and continue to develop his skills, as he does have some good potential.
Hayden Lavigne, Toronto Young Nationals - Incomplete. Did not play.
Daniel Potter, Toronto Young Nationals - Potter was a bit of a surprise for the Nationals. He subbed in for injured Lavigne, and was a key reason for the Nationals moving forward. He showed strong positional play, and was focused throughout the period. He didn’t let traffic bother him, and always looked to be square to shots. Put himself on the board for the OHL Draft.
Cameron Hackett, Vaughan Kings - Hackett played well for the Kings. He was undefeated in the tournament, and showed improved positional play. He looked calmer and more focused then other times we had seen him, and was one of the better puck handling goaltenders in the tournament. He was strong in the victory over the London Knights, showing good positional play and composure in the face of some heavy action in front of him.
Aaron Taylor, York Simcoe Express - Taylor played two games for the Express this weekend. He looked solid throughout the tournament. He was solid positionally and effective at being aggressive within the crease. He stopped all the shots that he should have, and showed good focus and positioning. Cemented his status as one of the top 10 goaltenders for the Draft.
Defenceman
Sal Filice, Don Mills Flyers - Filice struggled a bit this weekend. He was not as strong with the puck in his own zone, and made some questionable decisions with the puck. He was good positionally in his own zone, and showed a good complete level, but was off on the offensive side of the game. Still a solid depth pick for the OHL Draft.
C.J Garcia, Don Mills Flyers - Garcia was another defenceman who struggled a bit this weekend. He was not as crisp with the puck as he has been in the past. He struggled with his positional play in his own zone, and was not as strong at with his gap control. Will still be a top 100 player for the OHL Draft, but struggled at times this week.
Nathan Billitier, Elite Selects - Billitier was one of the top performers for the Selects this week. He was strong at skating the puck up the ice, reading the play and making an intelligent decision. The most impressive aspect to his game was his footwork. He has some of the best feet of the age group, and really impressed with his intelligence, as well as his mobility. He was strong throughout the week, but his best in the quarterfinal loss to the Rebels. He showed intelligent, puck skills and a really high upside. He has NCAA options, but will be a top 40 selection in the OHL Draft.
Daniel Willett, Elite Selects - Willett really turned some heads in his limited action. He played his best game of the season against the North York Rangers, showing strong mobility and agility. His vision with the puck was outstanding, and he was very, very strong in the offensive zone. He has really put himself on the radar for the OHL Draft, and could hear his name called very early despite his NCAA commitment.
David Eccles, Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs - Eccles was solid for the Bulldogs. He played to his strengths and was strong down low and along the boards, while keeping it simple in the offensive zone. He was very effective in puck battles, and was strong at playing a defense-first game. He has some room to grow with his footwork, as he has some pretty heavy feel, but we like his long-term potential. Looked strong in the Bulldogs loss to the Vaughan Kings, playing physical and aggressively.
Jacob Middleton, Huron Perth Lakers - Middleton played to expectations. He struggled at times with his puck skills, but a lot of that had to do with the teams he was playing against. He was solid in his own zone, and was extremely strong at playing a smart, defense-first game. He was excellent in puck battles, and at his best engaging physically in his own zone. He will be the second defenceman drafted in the OHL Draft.
Alex Peters, Huron Perth Lakers - Peters was solid for the Lakers. He was effective at playing a strong, physical game, and is looking to really come into his own. He continues to display good poise with the puck, as well as an ability to skate the puck out of his own zone. He still has room to develop, but shows some really interesting upside. Looked good against the Don Mills Flyers, making life difficult for opposition forwards.
Trevor Abbot, London Jr. Knights - Abbot quietly went about his business this weekend. He was effective at generating offense in his own zone, and showed some good poise at the point. He was not as aggressive as we would have liked him to be in his own zone, but he still has good potential. Was good in the Knights victory over the York Simcoe Express.
Matthew Watson, London Jr. Knights - Watson was inconsistent this week. He showed good vision with the puck in the neutral and offensive zone, but struggled at times with his decision making with the puck. He still struggles with the physical side of his game, and needs to continue to work on his ability to play a strong, physical game.
Santino Centorame, Mississauga Rebels - Centorame continued his elevated play this week. He took his strong performance during the GTHL playoffs and rode it throughout the OHL Cup. He was strong positionally in all three zones, and made some very intelligent decisions both with and without the puck. He was not noticeable a lot of the time, but was the strong and steady leader of a very poised defensive group.
Dylan Di Perna, Mississauga Rebels - DiPerna was good for the Rebels. He was strong at the point and displayed a really strong shot from the point. He was good down low, and effective at engaging opposition forwards in puck battles. Still have some concerns about his Hockey IQ. He made some poor pinches and rushes with the puck. Is still a fringe first round prospect, but will have to work on some things to be a player at the next level.
Kyle Jenkins, Mississauga Rebels - Jenkins was solid for the Rebels. He was good positionally in all three zones, and was effective at playing a smart, two-way game. He rarely turned over a puck in his own zone, and made the smart decision versus making a risky pass that would involve turning the puck over. He was a key factor for the Rebels in the playoffs.
Bennett Morrison, Mississauga Rebels - Morrison played his role well. He was effective at playing a solid defense-first game, and was at his best along the boards, winning battles. He still has some room to grow with his vision with the puck. He doesn’t have high-end puck skills, and needs to focus on making the smart play and playing within himself. He has the potential to be a really smart defensive defenceman at the next level.
Greg DiTomaso, North York Rangers - DiTomasco struggled a bit this week. He was not as confident with the puck as he had been in the past, and struggled with his decision-making with the puck in both his own zone, as well as the offensive zone. He was aggressive in his own zone, but just not as strong with the puck as he had been in the past.
Medric Mercier, Ottawa Jr. 67's - Mercier was a huge reason for the 67’s moving forward this week. He led the defensive unit, and was strong at playing effective two-way hockey. He showed good intelligence, and was able to contribute at both ends of the ice. He used good awareness to dive in front a shot in the dying moments of the overtime victory over the Elite Selects, while also generating offense using his shot at the point. It was a very good week for the 67's defenceman.
Kelly Summers, Ottawa Valley Titans - Summers played well this weekend, and cemented his status as one of the top Ottawa area defenceman in the draft. He showed good, intelligent plays with the puck in all three zones, and was effective at playing a smart two-way game. He showed good instincts. He still has some room to grow with his footwork and agility, but the potential is there.
John Di Lorenzo, Southern Tier Admirals - Di Lorenzo looked good with some aspects of his game, but struggled with others. He was effective in his own zone, playing a smart, aggressive game. He was not as crisp with the puck as we had seen in the past, and looked to be struggling to get things going offensively. He’s still a potential top six round player for the OHL Draft, just struggled with some aspects of his game.
Justin Felker, Southern Tier Admirals - Felker played to expectations. He was effective in his own zone, playing a smart, strong defensive game. He showed good awareness and positional play, having a strong active stick, and was good at keeping his gaps tight. He made smart plays with the puck in all three zones, and did not try to do too much offensively. Should be a top 4 round draft selection for the OHL Draft.
Greg Allen, Toronto Marlboros - Allen played to expectations. He was good positionally in his own zone, and was one of the more physical defenceman on the Marlboros. He was competitive and displayed strong aggression and was good in puck battles. At times he struggled with the puck, as well as his footwork and first few steps. He has a lot of potential, and has really progressed as the season played out.
Daniel DeSousa, Toronto Marlboros - DeSousa looked strong for the Marlboros. He was effective at stepping up and forcing players to make a decision at the blue-line that they were not prepared to make. He also caught a few players with their head down in the neutral zone. His skating, vision and positional play really impressed all week long, and should be a solid candidate for the first round of the OHL Draft.
Roland McKeown, Toronto Marlboros - McKeown was one of the top performers all week. He took a leadership role on the back end, and was able to control the game from the back-end. He was strong at rushing the puck up the ice and creating offense. He was excellent in his own zone, controlling gaps, having an active stick and knocking down passes. He was without a doubt the top defenseman at the OHL Cup, and will be the top defenseman available for the OHL Draft.
Darren Raddysh, Toronto Marlboros - Raddysh was solid for the Marlboros. As usual, he played both forward and defence, and never missed a beat. He was most effective as a puck moving defencemen who reads the ice well. He made strong reads with the puck on his stick, and really impressed with his ability to make intelligent decisions while skating the puck up the ice. He still has some room to grow with his core strength, his ability to play a strong, physical game. Now he can use his intelligence to out-maneuver opposing forwards, and he may not be able to do that at the next level.
Jared Walsh, Toronto Marlboros - Walsh was solid for the Marlboros. He was good at skating the puck up the ice, reading the play and distributing the puck with intelligence and skill. He showed good mobility and agility, and has some very good footwork and agility. He probably did not produce as much offense as he would have liked, as he made some questionable decisions, but overall played fairly well.
Vincent DaSousa, Toronto Young Nationals - DaSousa was solid for the Knights. He was good down low and along the boards, and effective at playing a strong, defense-first game. He was good at keeping his gaps tight, and had an effective stick in passing lanes. He was not as strong with the puck in all three zones, but that’s not really his niche. He projects out as a smart defensive defenceman.
Jonathan Duchesne, Vaughan Kings - Duchsene was solid for the Knights. He plays a solid defense-first role, and was effective away from the puck. He made smart decisions with the puck in all three zones, and although he has not progressed as expected, should still be a first round draft selection in April. He missed the team’s final two games.
Brandon Lukezic, Vaughan Kings - Lukezic played to expectations. He was good positionally in all three zones, and effective in puck battles down low. He didn’t bring a lot of offense, but he played his role well. He has some room to grow with his vision with the puck, but made smart plays in all three zones. Was good throughout the tournament.
Dante Cannatella, Vaughan Kings - Cannatella played to expectations. He was effective positionally in his own zone, and showed good positional play in his own zone. He struggled with the puck in the offensive zone, and made some poor decisions in the offensive zone. Should be a mid round draft selection for the OHL Draft.
Michael Eade, Vaughan Kings - Eade played well this week. He showed good mobility and agility, and was effective at skating the puck up the ice, making good decisions, and making crisp passes at high speeds. He was good on the powerplay, and showed an improved shot from the point. Size and strength will be an issue for him moving forward. Looked good in the Kings victory over the London Knights.
Conor Cummins, Whitby Wildcats - Cummins was the Wildcats top player, and continues to show all the projectable tools that you look for in a franchise defenceman. He skated the puck up the ice and was strong at generating offense through the rush. He was more aggressive down low and along the boards, and seemed to take a more active, physical role. He was effective throughout the week, but really looked strong against the Whitby Wildcats, playing a smart two-way game.
Travis Dermott, York Simcoe Express - After missing the first half of the season with an injury, Dermott is really starting to display some of the tools that you look for in an offensive minded defenceman. He was very effective at skating the puck up the ice, reading the play and making a smart decision. He showed good poise on the powerplay, and was very strong at distributing the puck. He has some concerns: his size and strength, as well as his ability to stay healthy, however his upside is impressive, and he is trending in the right direction.
Kyle Locke, York Simcoe Express - Locke impressed this week. He continues to look like a defenceman who brings a good compete-level, and was effective at both ends of the ice. He was at his best on the powerplay, distributing the puck with intelligent, while also using his shot to generate offense. He was strong at skating the puck through the neutral zone and generating offense through the neutral zone. He cemented his status as a top-40 draft selection for this year’s Draft.
Forwards
Gordon Helmuth, Detroit Little Caesars Selects - Helmuth really surprised this week. Coming in he was looked at as a depth player on the Selects, but he ended up really opening some eyes with his play. He was one of the best finishers around the net for the selects, and showed strong vision with the puck in the offensive zone. He has some room to grow with his puck protection skills, as well as his upper body strength, but the potential is there. Looked strong against the Toronto Marlboros in a 7-5 loss.
Cody Milan, Detroit Little Caesars Selects - Milan really impressed this week. He is an elite offensively minded forward who shows some really strong potential. He is at his best skating the puck through the neutral zone, reading the play and taking the line. He moves well for a bigger player, and shows good elusiveness. He has some room to grow with his upper body strength, as well as his ability to win engage physically.
Joseph Berton, Don Mills Flyers - Berton was one of the top performers for an under performing Flyers team. He was at his best around the net, showing good finishing skills. He worked well with Dante Salituro, showing good chemistry. He displayed improved mobility and agility. He is one of the more interesting players on Don Mills, and has really come on in the second half of the season.
Stuart Ilekys, Don Mills Flyers - Ilekys started the tournament off well, but got quiet after the second game. He was effective at playing a smart, two-way game, but didn’t finish the tournament off with the same jump that he had in the first game, or how he finished the GTHL playoffs. He may have been the victim of the poor finishing skills of his teammates. He still is fairly underrated for the OHL Draft, and could be a sleeper that makes some noise in a few years.
Dante Salituro, Don Mills Flyers - Salituro started off slowly for the Flyers, but really found his niche towards the end of the tournament. As always, he was lethal around the net, and displayed why so many have him as one of the best pure scorers in the Draft. He was strong with the puck in the offensive zone, and made some pretty impressive reads. He projects out as a mid first round draft pick with some high offensive skills.
Ryan Hitchcock, Elite Selects - Incomplete, did not play.
Michael Amadio, GNML Selects - Amadio really impressed. He was strong with the puck on his stick, and displayed some strong finishing skills around the net. He was very effective at skating the puck up the ice, gaining the blue line and assessing the best course of action. He may be the best GNML performer at the OHL Cup in recent memory. Really liked his game in the victory over the Southern Tier Admirals, he was dominant in the offensive zone.
Anthony Stefano, GNML Selects - Stefano played well this week. He showed good chemistry with teammate Michael Adamio, and was strong with the puck in the offensive zone, making some quick and intelligent decisions, and making strong assessments with the puck. He was strong in the Selects victory over the Ottawa Valley Titans, showing some good puck skills. He is not the most aggressive or physical player, and shies away from contact a bit. Playing with a more aggressive and physical mindset will aid his game.
Connor Murphy, Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs - Murphy struggled a bit this week. He was not as strong with the puck as we have seen before, and did not really seem to have that jump that we saw out of him at the SCTA and OMHA championships. He struggled down low and along the boards, although it was not due to a lack of effort or compete-level. Just a bad week, and really shouldn’t effect his draft rankings too much at this point.
Garrett James, Huron Perth Lakers - James was very strong this week, and really is starting to come into his own. He has been improving for a long time, but really took a step this weekend. He showed strong finish around the net, and always looked to be strong with the puck. He has improved his skating throughout the year, and although it’s still an issue, he really has improved. He was strong throughout the tournament, but really looked good against the Toronto Young Nationals, scoring and dominating the play down low.
Jared McCann, London Jr. Knights - McCann was very strong this weekend, and cemented his status as one of the top players for the 2012 OHL Draft. He was a threat anytime he touched the puck, and was very strong at generating offensive chances. He showed a laser shot all week, and really impressed with his quick release. Played well all week long, and has put himself in a position to be a top 5 selection at the OHL Draft.
Kyle Pettit, London Jr. Knights - Pettit was inconsistent this week. He showed all the tools that you look for in a top 9 forward at the next level, but lacked consistency this weekend. When he was aggressive on the forecheck and strong down low, he was at his best, but he was not always willing to engage. He will still be a top half of the draft guy, but still has some work to do with improving his overall game.
Keaton Ratcliffe, London Jr. Knights - Ratcliffe played to expectations. He was good down low and along the boards, and showed a willingness to play a more aggressive and physical role. He was not as strong with the puck as he has been in the past, but the potential is there. Played well against the York Simcoe Express.
Spencer Watson, London Jr. Knights - Watson played to expectations, and was one of the top players in the tournament. He is one of the smoothest and elusive players in the age group, and showed those abilities all week long. He added some strong secondary scoring, and has some of the best puck skills in the age group. He showed strong finishing skills. He played well against the TPH Thunder, showing some very strong offensive abilities.
Damian Bourne, Mississauga Rebels - Bourne had a quiet OHL Cup. He was good at times, but lacked the consistency that one had hoped to see from him. He has all the tools that you look for in a power forward, but did not engage physically as often as he should, and looked to be taking shifts off. He can dominate game when he wants to, and will be an interesting player to watch progress as he moves to the next level.
Jake Evans, Mississauga Rebels - Evans was a nice surprise for the Rebels. He was one of the better Rebels forwards at the OHL Cup, and really looked to be hitting his stride once the OHL Cup hit. He played well with forward Brett Hargrave, as the two looked to have some strong chemistry. He also was strong positionally, and was often effective at playing at both ends of the rink. He was strong defensively, and was often matched up against the opposition’s top centre.
Robert Fabbri, Mississauga Rebels - Fabbri played to expectations. He was strong throughout the tournament, and always looked dynamic with the puck. He made strong crisp passes in all three zones, and made some strong decisions with the puck. He showed a high complete level and work ethic, and cemented his status as a top-10 selection for the OHL Draft.
Brett Hargrave, Mississauga Rebels - Hargrave played his best hockey of the season this week. He was dangerous with the puck in the offensive zone, and showed some nice puck skills and finishing skills around the net. He looked good on the big ice, and although he has some room to grow with his first few steps, he really looks to have improved his mobility and agility over the year. Should be a prime candidate for a top 10 selection in the OHL Draft.
David Miller, Mississauga Rebels - Miller was quiet, yet effective. He was smart with the puck on his stick, and effective at playing a smart offensive game. As it was all year, he didn’t let his size limit himself, and he added some strong secondary scoring for the Rebels. He was strong in the Rebels victory over the Mississauga Rebels.
Calvin Gomes, North York Rangers - Gomes played the best we have seen from him this week. He always has been a player that plays a strong, aggressive brand of hockey, but he looked to be gaining confidence in his puck skills. He was solid when cycling the puck down low and along the boards, and was effective at finishing off plays around the net, as well as making good, smart decisions with the puck within 5 to 10 feet of the net. Was strong in the Rangers victory over the Thunder Bay Kings.
Kris Bennett, North York Rangers - Bennett played to expectations. He looked good with the puck and made some impressive passes at a high speed. He showed strong footwork and acceleration, and was at his best skating the puck through the neutral zone, distributing it at high speeds. He still struggles with his ability to protect the puck in high traffic, as well as his ability to win battles for the puck down low, but played well this week.
Matt McLeod, North York Rangers - McLeod struggled with the puck this weekend. He was not as dynamic and elusive as he had been in the past, and struggled with getting things going in the offensive zone. He did display good mobility and footwork, and worked hard, but never really got things going for the Rangers.
Andrew Abou-Assaly, Ottawa Jr. 67's - Heading into this tournament, Abou-Assaly was one of the hottest players in Ontario. He was our best player in January's Peterborough Midget tournament, and was excellent throughout the OEMHL Playoffs. This week, he took all that momentum and pushed his high draft stock already higher. He was very strong offensively, and showed off his strong vision with the puck in both the offensive and neutral zone. He was a game breaker and difference maker in every game he played, and if it wasn’t for a hot goaltender, he may have taken the 67's all the way to the OHL Cup final. He has raised his draft stock to the point where it’s fair to consider him a 1st round draft selection this season.
Alexandre Renaud, Ottawa Jr. 67's - Renaud has always been a favorite of ours. We liked his size and mobility, and felt that he could be a real sleeper for the draft. Based on his play this week, the sleeper label is probably no longer applicable, as he has really opened his eyes. Skating with Abou-Assaly, Renaud really thrived this week. He was good down low and along the boards, and displayed some really nice work ethic. He was in puck battles, and strong down low and along the boards. He still has room with his first few steps, but love the upside.
Patrick White, Ottawa Jr. 67's - White was strong for the 67's. He showed improved finishing skills, and looks to be a player who brings a high intelligence level to the ice whenever he is in the offensive zone. He is a good skater, with above average footwork and mobility. He has some room to grow with his strength and positional play, but the potential is there.
Dallas Farr, Ottawa Valley Titans - Incomplete. Did not play.
Owen McDade, Ottawa Valley Titans - McDade was off his normal performance, but played well considering his illness. Hard to judge him based on his performance this week.
Matt Gillard, Southern Tier Admirals - Gillard was probably the Admirals best forward this week. He looked strong with the puck, and was fairly effective at playing a strong offensive game. He brought a high complete-level, and was always working hard. He didn’t produce as much as he probably wanted to, but that may have more to do with the play of others rather than him
Ty Learn, Southern Tier Admirals - Incomplete. Learn played the week with some injuries that really limited his effectiveness. Not fair to judge him this week.
Niki Petti, Southern Tier Admirals - Petti struggled a bit this weekend. He was not as crisp with the puck as he has been in the past and was not as strong in the offensive zone as he normally his. He struggled with his vision with the puck and his ability to play a strong offensive game. He worked hard, but just did not accomplish much this weekend.
Matt Schmaltz, Southern Tier Admirals - Like most of his Southern Tier teammates, Schmaltz struggled with consistency this week. He was not as crisp with the puck on his stick, and did not show the same kind of dynamic offensive ability that he had shown in the past. He displayed good mobility, as well as all the tools, just struggled with his compete levels.
Hayden Hodgson, Sun County Panthers - Hodgson really stepped up his game this week. He shows some really strong vision with the puck in the offensive zone, and made some really impressive decisions with the puck on his stick. He played well off of Joe Manchurek, providing some strong playmaking ability. Was very good in the Flyers victory over the Don Mills Flyers, showing some very strong offensive skills.
Joe Manchurek, Sun County Panthers - Manchurek was very strong for the Panthers, and really proved himself to be a top 60 draft selection. He displayed a really strong, accurate shot that was effective in the slot and offensive zones. He showed a good work ethic, and brought a very high complete level. He was strong in the Panthers’ loss to the Don Mills Flyers, contributing at both ends of the ice.
Jaden Lindo, Toronto Marlboros - Lindo played to expectations. He looked strong down low and along the boards, and was at his best engaging physically and playing a strong, aggressive game. He continues to show improving footwork and acceleration, and has really come on as the year progresses. Work ethic and strength were very visible. Have some concerns about his long-term puck skills, as he can struggle a bit with the puck under pressure, and projects out as more of a finisher then a playmaker.
Connor Graham, Toronto Marlboros - Graham played to expectations. He showed good work ethic and mobility, and was smart at both ends of the ice. He looked strong positionally, and looks to have really improved his overall puck skills as the year played out. Still not sure about his long term potential, but he has shown enough to be a top 4 round player for the OHL Draft.
Jeremiah Addison, Toronto Marlboros - Addison showed this week why so many have him as a top 2 round player for the OHL Draft. He showed strong mobility and agility, and was one of the more dangerous players for the Marlboros all week long. He showed one of the best releases in the age group, and has one of the more impressive shots that we have seen this year. He was at his best against the Detroit Belle Tire Selects, scoring four goals and showing some very impressive finish around the net all game.
Joshua Ho-Sang, Toronto Marlboros - Ho-Sang was hot and cold this weekend. He started off quite slowly, playing a selfish, me-first style of game. He would skate himself into situations that he could not get out of, and would hesitate to use his teammates. He got frustrated and was suspended for two games of the tournament due to a slash. He came back and played better in the second half of the tournament, and really hit his stride. He looked to be the most dynamic and offensively gifted player at the age group at times, and really was a different player then we saw in the first two games. When he is the player that we saw in the first half, he limits his effectiveness and raises a lot of eyebrows. When he is the player who came back in the second half of the tournament, he is the best ’96 born player in the draft. It will be interesting to see him move into the OHL, and see how he adjusts to the game at the next level.
Michael Cramarossa, Toronto Marlboros - Cramarossa was solid for the Marlboros. He showed a good work ethic, and was one of the better two-way players this week for the Marlboros. He was effective with the puck in open ice, read the play well, and made the right decision. He was good positionally in his own zone, and was effective at playing a smart, two-way game. He had the game on his stick a few times in the Finals loss to the Mississauga Rebels, and was not able to finish things off. It will be interesting to see how his offensive skills translate to the next level.
Samuel Bennett, Toronto Marlboros - Bennett really cemented his first round status for the OHL this week. In the past, we had concerns that some of his abilities and finishing abilities came from line mate Connor McDavid elevating Bennett's play, but this week he was very strong with the puck, showed great vision, and displayed very strong puck skills. He was elusive with the puck in the offensive and neutral zones, and made some defenders look silly with his strong hands and puck skills. He always looked to be dangerous with the puck on his stick, and had distanced himself from most of his peers with his performance.
Connor McDavid (1997), Toronto Marlboros - There is not much to be said about McDavid at this point. Normally we shy away from talking about players who are not eligible for the OHL Draft, but McDavid was simply outstanding this week, and has cemented his status as the top prospect for the OHL Draft, regardless of his birth date. He was dynamic with the puck and showed some of the best vision we have seen in the years that we have covered the Draft. He took the puck into the danger areas, and was willing to take a hit to make a play. He had the ability to see the play develop two or three plays ahead of time, and adjust his positioning accordingly. He was announced as tournament MVP, an accolade that was well deserved. Expect a positive announcement from Hockey Canada regarding McDavid's exceptional status application at some point this week.
Evan Smith, Toronto Young Nationals - Smith was probably the best forward for the Nationals, and was a key reason for the Nationals moving forward. He showed good mobility and agility, and looks to be improving his two-way play. He did not put up as much offense that he wanted to, but at the same time he contributed at both ends of the ice, and showed a good compete-level. Was strong in the Nationals victory over the Huron Perth Lakers.
Jordan Addesi, Vaughan Kings - Incomplete. Did not play.
Chad Burrows, Vaughan Kings - Burrows was very strong this week, and really stepped up his game. He was much more active with the puck, and seemed to be much better with the puck then previously viewed. He has always been a hard working player, but struggled with his vision with the puck. Playing with Dal Colle this week, he showed improved offensive skills. He’s a player who really helped himself this week. Was strong in the Kings’ victory over the York Simcoe Express.
Michael Dal Colle, Vaughan Kings - Dal Colle was one of the top performers of the tournament for the Kings, and one of the top performers of the tournament. He was at his best all tournament long and took the Kings on his back to the quarter-finals. He showed strong intelligence and was good positionally, and displayed strong finishing skills around the net. He was strong in the Kings’ victory over the London Jr. Knights in a big game situation.
Marc Stevens, Vaughan Kings - Stevens played to expectations. He is a shifty forward who shows good puck skills. He was good with the puck in the offensive zone, and was effective at distributing the puck. He has the agility to play smart positionally at both ends of the ice. He was effective in the Kings’ victory over the London Jr. Knights.
Bobby MacIntyre, Whitby Wildcats - MacIntyre was the Wildcats top forward, and continues to display strong offensive instincts. He was effective at skating the puck into the offensive zone, assessing the play and either driving the net or looking for an open passing lane. Despite the loss, he looked strong in the game against the Mississauga Rebels, displaying some strong offensive skills.
Everett Clark, Whitby Wildcats - Clarke played to expectations. He was strong at playing an aggressive, competitive style. He was willing to mix it up physically, and brought a real high compete level. He looked good with the puck on his stick, and read the ice well in both the offensive and neutral zones. He cemented himself as a solid mid round draft selection with some interesting upside.
Nik Coric, York Simcoe Express - Coric really struggled this week. He struggled with his offensive abilities, and did not seem to be as strong with the puck as he normally is. He struggled in traffic, and did not make intelligent plays with the puck in the offensive zone. He seemed to be lacking a high compete level and willingness to battle through checks in the offensive zone.
Mitchell Safaric, York Simcoe Express - Incomplete. Did not play.
Justin Wain, York Simcoe Express - Wain continued his impressive second half this week. He showed really improved mobility and agility, and was much more confident with the puck in the offensive zone. He showed a really strong shot from the slot. He always finished his checks in on the fore check, and really looks to be coming into his own at the right time.

YSE star forward is not attending combine due to injuries he has been playing with. Everytime a tourney does not go well, same old thing, oh well - he was injured or sick. They are keeping him out of the combine because his stock will drop even further than it did at the Cup. It dropped off the chart there. He is not sick or hurt. Has never engaged physically and certainly will not at the next level. He plays in a crappy loop where :average at best" is the norm. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 23 2012, 11:09 AM |
YSE and the term star forward is an oxymoron.
|

He will go 2nd round for sure regardless of the Cup |

12:33pm Lots of kids not on the list, doesn't mean the information given is incorrect.
Check out HF Boards, they tend to touch on mostly the top 10 and some first rounders. Given there will be 300 kids drafted, there is no surprise all kids aren't mentioned.... |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 23 2012, 2:50 PM |
My kid all over HF Boards and no mention here. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 23 2012, 4:37 PM |
Mine never on HF, but he is here. Go figure huh? |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 23 2012, 4:41 PM |
My boy just came back from first day at OHL combines, don't care if it is top 80 or bottom 80 of draft it was a great experience. If your boy evers gets chosen next year DO NOT MISS OUT! Kids were treated like professionals, the event was very well staged and well organized-came back looking like an "Under Armor" walking commercial. Was also very surprised at how many scouts where present, especially since today was the "dryland" portion.

How the fuck is my 96 boy going to be invited next year? |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 23 2012, 4:49 PM |
With parent`s like you maybe his birth year might have been mixed up...if your read the name of this tread its called `Spòrts R4U-97 and Older. Now go back to your trailer. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 23 2012, 4:50 PM |
Dumbass. 99.99% of the people reading OHL COMBINE are minor midget parents. Fuck off. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 23 2012, 4:57 PM |
As I said, go back to your trailer, and while your their pick up a dictionary and see if you can extend your vocabulary a bit. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 7:23 AM |
I know this so far I am actually getting value for my money. Kids got quite a lot stuff for what it cost. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 5:22 PM |
You know it's a real shame that some parents have chosen to exclude their kids from this. They think they are top 3 and don't need to do this. But it's not about where and how high you get drafted. I was there today and it is really nice to see the comraderie amoungst the boys. These are the players you are going to be going forward with in your hockey careers. You should spend time with them. You are not the only player on your team get to know your fellow potential team mates. You can't do it without them. Shame on any kid that decided not to apply. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 5:31 PM |
Maybe they didn't "apply" cause they weren't invited. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 5:35 PM |
"Maybe they didn't "apply" cause they weren't invited."
You right, McKeown and Ho-Sang weren't invited lol. Wow |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 6:06 PM |
The top kids don't go because they don't want their TRUE height and weight listed for everyone to see - most have added at least 2 inches to their height and 20 pounds to their weight lol |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 6:12 PM |
McDavid was listed as 5"11' for OHL cup and 5"9.5" for OHL combine |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 6:24 PM |
The combine has them measured properly it flushes all the bull shitters out of the wood work. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 6:28 PM |
They dont go because they already know where they are going. Its a done deal, so why bother.
And wait, MapleLeaf979 said he was 5'11 170!!!!!!!!!! Jeez MapleLeaf sounded so unbiased when he said that too lol |

Anyway to access combine test results? |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 7:44 PM |
Cudo's to the Rebel players, this year's OHL Cup champions for showing up at the OHL Combine. Ya, most of them also have nothing to prove and likely know where they are going next year, but unlike some of their Marlies counterpart also realize that they are still boys and the commaderie of having one last round of fun challenging their peers to a round of competition was too tempting to pass.
Non Rebel Parent |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 7:50 PM |
TM kids are not team players. Their success does not translate well to the OHL. They will not risk being seen in a 'game' without their supporting cast. |

"TM kids are not team players. Their success does not translate well to the OHL. They will not risk being seen in a 'game' without their supporting cast."
Um...Can I list off all the Marlboros that have become 1st rounders? I get the hate, they beat us all year too, but lets not just make things up... |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:02 PM |
yes, they get drafted highly in the O. And then? the spoiled, pampered upbringing hurts them. Where is the exceptional kid this weekend? Great talent, now a black mark on the character. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:04 PM |
This is not about who becomes first rounders, its about letting boys be boys |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:07 PM |
Sorry, I ment NHL first Rounders. Again, I get the hate, they beat us all year too, but dont be an idiot, the program has a history of producing stars. |

"Where is the exceptional kid this weekend? Great talent, now a black mark on the character."
Hes at the Combine? Why do you ask? |

Anyone sticking out at the combine. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:27 PM |
Marlies produce no more stars than anyone else. And McD has been a noshow. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:32 PM |
Blind Hate is that you???
And I dont know, I see more Marlies at the Draft then any other team. Two more rated for this years NHL Draft first round. More then any other team in Ontario. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:34 PM |
Looking for PLAYERS in the NHL. You're making the point for me Marlie Defender! They get drafted and then flame out because they can't mesh with a team. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:36 PM |
They beat everyone, they beat us all year, so jealousy and anger is not shocking on an annoymous forum. I get it, but it doesnt help anything. Not going to make you feel better by ripping on 15 year olds.
They do have the best history for deveolpment, pretending otherwise is ignorant. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:39 PM |
Facts man. Where are they? Where are your stars? Don't BS us with the 'beat us' crap. You are Captain Marlie and I submit that your kids are arrogant and afraid to be seen with quality kids whose only chance to be compared to the self annointed best has been stolen from them. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:43 PM |
Huh?
"Looking for PLAYERS in the NHL. You're making the point for me Marlie Defender! They get drafted and then flame out because they can't mesh with a team."
Sorry, I guess John Tavares, Brendan Smith, Sam Gagner with the 89's are not playing in the NHL, with others like Cody Goloubef, Bryan Cameron and others on the way. I guess we should give up on the 92's with Christian Thomas, JP Anderson and Freddie Hamilton with signed contracts and Adam Clendening a second round pick.
I get the hate, I do, they kick your ass all year so you have to get 'back at them', but the program has a history of development that not many others can claim. Hate it if you want, fine, but as a wise poster once said..
Facts are your friend. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:44 PM |
So tavares and gagne. Two. Wow. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:45 PM |

I have no idea. My kid plays on the JC's and was not invited. Just sick of the parents who feel the need to attack kids. Where are the kids from other programs that declined, why arn't you attacking them? Fair game no? If your going to hate, dont steriotype, hate equally. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:47 PM |
What an asshole. They are 15, who cares if they go to a combine or not. My 15 year old kid is burnt out from hockey and we took him for a vacation. I guess kids arent alowed a break. Go Go Go. Gotta do what they are told by the asshole on N54. Fuck, your kid must me miserable. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:48 PM |
R U slow? This was the non OHL Cup players only chance to play aginst the great Marlie players. they were robbed. Defend as you will. arrogance. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:51 PM |
Don't know if he is an asshole, but obvisouly bitter.
I think they have beat our team something like 42 times in the last few years. Some of our parents have pent up aggression too. I get it, but really, who cares? What does the combine have to do with anything? I know one kid on Marlies who is friends with my kid was told not to go by the OHL team who is going to draft him. They aleady know they are drafting him, so dont go and take a break.
I do agree, kids have free will. To bad that some need to vent and piss on them. They are actually good kids, and not any different from our own. The anger and bitterness wont take you anywhere, and wont matter in the grand scheme of things. Go for a run or something. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:52 PM |

Just stop feeding the guy. He has anger issues, fine.
Hes not going to get over it, and thinks that somehow making annonymos comments on N54 justify the hate.
I woud hate to live that way, but hey, if thats what he needs to justify things in his mind, let him have it. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 8:55 PM |
Arrogant sucks. Would have looked average and their OHL clubs would have shit their pants at their mediocrity on their own. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 9:02 PM |
Your right, its a fucking conspiracy. The OHL teams told them to say home so they didnt look bad. They dont want to draft your kid, but if they look bad at the combine then your kid may have a shot. So the OHL teams told them to stay home to screw your kid. Is that what its going to take to shut you up? Fuck, what an arrogant prick. Shame you never said any of this in the rink. Then id respect you for having balls, but no, you are a man online but are a fucking mute in the rink. Shocking.... |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 9:14 PM |
You know not showing up points to arrogance. Arrogance is something a under 17 team or under 18 does not need. "Teams" win championships. Individuals win nothing. If you don't show for thses type of events thwn you don't deserve U17 or U18 condsideration. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 9:19 PM |
ooooh 902...so much anger for a JrC dad. lol. Enjoy your draft result. Will be all downhill from there. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_U-17_Hockey_Challenge
8 Golds vs. the next best 3 Golds..
And the 94 team had a ton of Marlies AND palyers who skipped the Combine and STILL won gold.........Hmmmmmm |

you got me. your kid will be great because the 94s won the gold medal. are you really that obtuse? |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 9:57 PM |
Mark my words too much arrogance at this age group. 96' will NOT WIN under 17 next year. Way too much arrogance and politics. Overhyped kids at this age group will not produce champions. It will be US or European team that will win GUARANTEED. Hockey Canada are a bunch of lame ducks. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 9:59 PM |
No, my kid isnt good. Hes a AAA plug, but he loves the game so im happy.
My point, which you missed, was that you said the U17 team wont take kids because they skipped out on a combine. I just provided facts to refute that. You had no responce. |

Fact is every single kid at this event this weekend will be drafted at some point in the OHL draft, last years group 9f% of the players that attended were drafted |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 24 2012, 11:26 PM |
Agree 100 perfect. Goalies can be a question mark. But, as Tigers(OHL Scout) said on HFBoards
"It's not the top list as per OHL Central Scouting. I have access to it, and although similar, the 80 players attending are rated all over the map (1st round to 10-15th round)."
So don't be shocked to see players at the combine not drafted or drafted all over the place. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 25 2012, 8:20 AM |
Agree with the last post.
Lots of players attending combine that might not get drafted at all.
They are making the best look better thats for sure. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 25 2012, 8:40 AM |
That is pretty friggin arrogant comment. Only an arrogant parent would say that. The boys are having fun and few are looking at anyone's results but their own. Boys are having fun seeing old friends and the environment. Unreal that so called adults have to act like this. Not once have I heard any kids say how another kid is rated. Only comments I have heard from boys is how fit another player is. Grow up for f' sakes. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 25 2012, 11:10 AM |
just a stupid question but is the combine free and why would someone care if someone else kid didnt want to go ??? just make spots for other kids. why is that a bad or arrogant thing. Do the Marlies have to attend every event they are invited to?? |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 25 2012, 12:19 PM |
Every Player at this event will be drafted, or 97% of them, its the same every year. Stop being jealous and just open your eyes. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 25 2012, 12:42 PM |
Who gives a shit what "Tigers 92" has to say on HF boards. Look at previous drafts and compare reality with Tigers' and 4 other authors predictions that dominate that forum and you'll see they're only half right.
How gullible are you people? You really think someone working for an OHL team is posting shit on an annonymous blog?
The next four years will weed out the media sensations and guys that are only in on the end of the play in minor hockey from those that are skilled and can be hard to play against in a tight checking and mean league. Relax with the Marlie bullshit.
Where are all the '92's Marlie worshipped? Are you wondering why the only 94 Marlie guy ranked in the first round by NHL central scouting was a shut down guy? Where are all the superstars now? Alot of them (you know, 800 points in their MM year?) aren't even ranked and April 7 will be the high water mark of their careers.
Too bad they didn't have the balls to show up this weekend.
|

CmcD, JHS, Jm, JM, BH,RM, MD all top 10 never showed up.
Scared to compete against really good strong talent, and on the other hand could have helped them, but I understand, you and your agent have a team in mind, you did not show up because you didn't want to attract other teams to draft you before your requested team, stop the BS, i know the truth and so does everyone else, all you guys are future OHLer's the least you could have done was respectedm the OHL and show up!!!!!
very disgusted in your no show....
The best 2 players at the combine was RF and EC, they should go #1 and #2 |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 10:26 AM |
Combine is first a PR event and second designed to evaluate late first - fourth round talent and give teams a bit of another look.
That said, it is the players work during the season that is the key measure, not a combine.
But thanks for being "disgusted" - no one really cares whether you are happy, sad, disgusted, disgruntled, whatever, it's got nothing to do with you little man. |

| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 10:34 AM |
You people have NO clue how all this works....first rounders, especially top 10 players are in another stratosphere with all kinds of negotiating being done.
The OHL combine was simply a PR event, nothing more. These kids have been viewed so very much, the combine added nothing. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 10:56 AM |
Actually was very much of the same impression regarding the combine, I was however blown away with the amount of scouts at this event, not only at yesterdays games but through-out the weekend. Again I don't think your performance at the combine will make or break your draft position, but I think clubs are genuinely interested on how their prospect perform at these events.
Of particular note, it was interesting that none of the scouts used this opportunity to talk with any of their propects, likely requested to do so however so that boys could concentrate on the event only and not the circus that surrounds it. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 10:56 AM |
There were actually Top 10 picks that did show up. Good on them and their support of the weekend PR or not. Good old fashioned support and secure enough in their play to offer that support for the OHL. Question: if a player is granted exceptional status by the OHL through a rigourous process and is priviledged to be granted this why wouldn't the player report to the team picking number 1 team that would really want him. What were the motives? Everybody knew Erie was picking first by the end of November while the process of application for ES began. |

10:56, the second part of that is for another thread. however you're right. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 11:51 AM |
Player who received exceptional status has to report to team picking him - it is part of the deal. Secondly, he was ill and as such, not at combine. Strep throat I believe. It was a fun weekend for the kids. Stop trying to read so much into everything and analyzing stuff to death. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 12:30 PM |
What 11:51 said. CMD was on twitter wishing his friends well and upset he could not go. |

my son attended this event and enjoyed himself immensely the seminars were informative and the players were great it was a positive experience it did not affect their draft status but rather made for a postive experience before the draft Kids were treated very well by the organizers |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 1:24 PM |
The Marlie boys did very well at the combines. It should help GA and JW in the draft. DD and JL who both did well will solidify first round selections. |

Mark Katic and Zach Torquato #2 and #3 overall in the 2005 OHL draft....where are they now?
John Hughes 1st overall in the 2004 OHL draft. Washed out.
Patrick McNeill 1st overall and Tony Rizzi 3rd overall in the 2003 OHL draft....where are they now?
Dan LaCosta 4th overall and Jean-Michael Rizik 5th ovreall in the 2002 OHL draft......you get the picture.
|
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 2:06 PM |
Point well made. It truly is a long road. You can make the same argument for the NHL Draft and "where are they now" for many early picks. Don't get to cocky folks because the people you laugh at on your way up are the people you will see coming back down. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 2:28 PM |
Imagine the chances for the later picks. Im sure there are some mid to late rounders who have made a career of the game in the pro ranks. Players who have development potential are as sought after as the top ranked players. Their chances of success are pretty much equal I would think. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 2:32 PM |
2:03, people like you really make me laugh. most of those guys are playing in the AHL. at least they followed their dreams and gave it a honest shot. they've acheived something that only a small percentage of kids ever do.
Katic's already played in the NHL and is not finished by any means. JM "Rizk" was an outstanding player and the captain of the Kitchener Rangers. what you have NOT MENTIONED is that after the O he went to Laurier and got his degree on his education package. but please feel fee to paint these guys who have done you any harm as meaningless POS because they didn't become NHL superstars.
the point is whether the kids are 15 or 25 people will always knock them down if they're not JT's, Stamkos', or Crosby's. meanwhile I have little doubt that you be the proudest father of any these very same kids. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 2:34 PM |
Yup, just becuase dad doesnt know, doesnt mean he isnt being paid to play hockey. Almost every player mentioned is making 6 figures playing a game 6 months a year. Hughes is killing it in europe making 6 figures tax free.
Damn, Id hate to have to do that........ |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 2:34 PM |
2:28, Ryan Callahan the captain of the NY Rangers was a 14th round pick, Steve Mason 11th, Subban a 6th, Bryan Little was a 3rd rounder. there's many others. anything can happen. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 2:35 PM |
If you look at a typical OHL Draft, you will find 7-10 players eventually play at least a game in the NHL. Two to three play for any length of time. Some years a few more, some years a few less.
The 2004 draft year looks particularly fallow with Jordan Staal being the only OHL first round name you would recognize.
When I started looking at the last 10 year's history, I was shocked as I assumed the first rounders, particularly top 10 picks would be household names, or failing that playing in the AHL. Not so much.
We as parents tended to pooh pooh the stats all through the years, assumnig wrongly the stistics would not hold water for the 1996 draft year (I confess I did anyway). I realize now you can't change stats.
Congrats and good luck to all those boys drafted on April 7th, and for those who do play in the OHL keep up your studies. You'll most likely need them! |

2:34, exaclty. I wish I could say the same for mine. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 2:40 PM |
People need to get the NHL out of their head. If my kid can make 6 figures playing hockey in the AHL or Eurpoe, then hey, im all for it. Some like to say 'he flamed out', when in all honestly, hes still making a good living playing a game 6 months out of the year. Who doesnt want that? |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 2:40 PM |
Europe? I know lots of guys who played in Europe. They'd blow all their cash partying, then come home in the summers and work construction. Yeah, great life.
Know one guy who walked out after 2 years at Western Michigan to play in the old IHL, then went off to Europe. He says it was the stupidest thing he ever did, over the sound of the drywall gun! |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 2:42 PM |
A buddy of mine was playing in Germany, woke up one morning in France with no idea how he got there.
Vowed then to stop drinking but hockey was pretty much over for him.
Spent another 6 months touring the continent and then came home for good. Made a few bucks, today he runs a diner. |

2:36, as in the case of Stu Grimson and Randy Gregg you go on with life. contrary to what you believe, life doesn't cease at 30 if you don't have an MBA, LLB, P.Eng or MD.
in fact I work downtown in the financial industry and have hired many mature people in addition to the fresh, eager beavers. the older ones have always proved to be just as dedicated usually even more so. |

"Congrats and good luck to all those boys drafted on April 7th, and for those who do play in the OHL keep up your studies. You'll most likely need them!"
this line should read:
"Congrats and good luck to all those boys drafted on April 7th, regardless of where you play keep up your studies. You'll need them!"
this is the unbiased truth. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 2:50 PM |
Early picks are high risk/high reward players. It's a draft and the worst teams pick first. A lot of top 10 talent at 16 years old doesn't pan out for this reason. McD really is an exception. Look at the history of the draft and follow the first 2 1/2 rounds through the NHL draft and beyond. It's rich with players that were picked a little later and developed a little better. Just because your kid isn't in the top doesn't mean (like Kadri) that he can't make it. More of the later picks do if you bother to actually gather stats on the last 10 years or so. Kadri is a high risk/high reward player. How about Skinner in Carolina. Only 18 year old couple years ago to light it up- last pick of the first round. No doubt this years class will follow the pattern of the last decade but you'd be mistaken to think that if top picks don't work out later picks don't have a chance IMO. |

2:46, as in the JM Rizk example, who says these kids can't get a degree when they're done hockey? |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 2:56 PM |
No one. Point was that they weren't playing in the NHL given their high OHL draft status. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 2:59 PM |
2:50, I completely agree with your post.
however just a note on Skinner going 20th overall to Kitchener, the Rangers are notorious for their draft manuipulation. former coach Peter Deboer currently with the Devils was knows as "Peter the cheater". everyone who has kids or follows the league knows that Skinner manipulated the draft playing the NCAA card. Marcantuoni did the very same with the Rangers 2 years ago. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 3:01 PM |
So? More power to them.
The OHL is a business and these kids should go where they want to go, not where some junior operator says they have to go. Good on them. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 3:04 PM |
2:56, for sure but let's not crap on kids following their dreams. they can have a good life away from hockey when it's done. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 3:09 PM |
3:01 that point is well discussed in the "Minor Midget Draft" thread. I won't debate you but remember 2 things, a) it's against the rules, and b) there are 3 destinations of choice London, Kitchener and Windsor - it would cease to be a viable development league if there was no draft for the other 99% of the players. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 3:14 PM |
c) More teams would work harder to become the go-to franchises. It wasn't that long ago that Windsor was a have-not, right?
It seems to me Mississauga and Brampton have had few players not want to go there.....being close to a significant part of the draft eligible players, it seems those two franchises are good. |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 3:48 PM |
any donk can list wash ups.. how about the players who succeed ya dust bunny |
| Anonymous (no login) | Re: Ohl combine | March 26 2012, 4:02 PM |
3:14, good point. I've got a kid old enough to make me also remember when London was NOT a "go-to" franchise, as little as 10 years ago.
2 things to keep in perspective, a) contrary to 'what they say', truly only less than a handful of kids can get away with this, and more importantly, b) franchise success on the ice and balance sheet does not equal a protected environment and team emphasis on education. this last factor, ie a healthy, safe billet environment where your kid goes to school and gets tutoring is what manipulation should be intended for.
as for Brampton and Missy, they actually have had draft manipulation cases in the past. having WJC coaches in Butler and Cameron (now gone to Senators), decent track records of success, NHL alumni as well as their GTA proximity have made them desirable. additionally, Cameron had all the non-local Missy kids to go to one high-school where he could check in on them. having a masters degree in education should indicate to you that having his kids in school is a priority. I think you are refering to Ebert not reporting - let's just say it was indeed draft manipulation however for both Missy and Windsor, via Missy's trade to get Shugg/Cantin (for Ebert & Rychel jr) for their Mem Cup run. |
