| How does it work next year? Do kids need a release to tryout at a Junior or Midget tryout? Can they go anywhere? |

You certainly need a PTS. |

What about trying out for a junior b or c team in a diifferent community? Release needed? If so, who do you go to in order to get one?? |

Anonymous (Login SkankMartin) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | February 23 2012, 1:02 AM |
All depends............
If you are a 95 or later birth year and played minor hockey the season before you will need a PTS form from your Minor Hockey Organization to skate with any JR. team other than an OHL team.
If you are a 94 or later birth year and played Midget this season you will not need an PTS form from your Minor Hockey Organization.
If you are trying out for Midget AAA and played a lower division last season you must go to your home centre and do not need a PTS form. If you wish to go outside your Home centre your F1 Waiver is a PTS! |
|

What does PTS stand for? I tried to google it, but always comes back as "points". |
|

PTS = Permission to Skate |
|

So your home centre basically has you until you are done with Midget? |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | February 23 2012, 2:06 PM |
also if you are a 1996 trying out for a jr b,c,d team next season as a 16 u may go where ever for jr b but for jr c and d it can only be your local team. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | February 23 2012, 2:30 PM |
if you have a good Midget AAA team in your city go there instead of Jr C or D, you will get much better development |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | February 23 2012, 3:23 PM |
What if your city has JR B but not C or D, can you go to the next local small town? |
|
Anonymous (Login SkankMartin) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | February 23 2012, 3:38 PM |
If you are a 16 year old player looking to play Jr. C/D you can only play on a team in which you live in their drawing area. It does not necessarily have to be in the same town, but you need to be considered a "Local Drawing Area Player or a Non-Import"
For example:
a 16 year old player that lives in Brantford can play Jr. C in Simcoe or Jr. D in St. George. That same player can play Jr. A/B anywhere!
The OHF changed some of these rules roughly 5 years ago to try and limit 16 year olds playing lower level Jr. Hockey and try to build up the Midget AAA systems. |

There is no Jr. C unless you consider the Western Jr. C league. There is a lot of Jr. D around the London area.
The nice thing about the London area is, there is NO Jr.A team southwest of Hamilton and with a very small amount of Jr. C teams the Jr. D league (SOJHL) is actually a good aletrnative for Jr. C.
Mind you Jr. D, isnt not comparable to Jr. A or Jr. B but if you want to develop your game against players that are, sometimes 5 years older than you it is a good option. The Jr. D league is a very good option if you can "APJ" with a Jr. B team in the area and get double the practice time. You can only AP for a maximum of 10 games with the higher level team; but if you develop well that team does have the option of buying your card from the Jr. D team.
The Jr. D league has had some success of late promoting players to higher levels of hockey.
Sean Callaghan (94) - North Middlesex Stars signed with the Ottawa 67's (OHL)
Chad Sumsion (90) - Tavistock Braves - playing NCAA with Bowling Green Div. 1
Alex Murray (93) - Hagersville Hawks - #1 goaltender for Burlington Cougars OJHL Jr. A

Are you better to have your kid play Midget or go to a school like Ridley or St. Andrews and play in their prep loop for Grade 11? Kid has NCAA offer pretty much in hand. They suggest USHL for Grade 12. |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | February 24 2012, 8:12 AM |
sorry skankmartin, no disrespect but the information regarding Jr D and APing to a B team is incorrect. When Hockey Canada put in place the new Development Model (this is where they restricted #'s of 16 year olds on junior teams) they also recognized where 16 year olds would better develop. If you are a 16 year old and choose to play Jr D or Jr C you cannot ap to a B team or Tier 2 team. You can only ap from a Midget AAA team. A 17 year old midget aged player can ap from D to B. If you recall situation with Lasalle Vipers last season they were without goalies for a game because of suspensions and injuries and called up a 16 year old Junior D or C goalie and the game was protested and they lost the win. Hockey Canada realized that the development of players from D was minimal this was from a statiscal perspective. for the poster above from London, your boys best bet is Midget AAA in your city and then AP to the London Nationals. As an avid Midget AAA fan and B scout I can tell you that his development will be a lot greater and faster going the Midget AAA route, especially since you have one of the best Midget AAA programs around in London. Generally we see from the London team 90-95% of the players move on to OHL, Tier 2 and Junior B. I can guarantee you Junior D or Junior C have no where near that success with player placement. |

Don't get me wrong, if it was my son I would prefer midget AAA to JR C/D. But there are OHL teams that would prefer a prospect playing against older players and perhaps develop in a new environment. I am not a promoter of JR. D hockey in any way, just giving information based on a question.
Each situation is different and needs to evaluated as such. Midget, a player has the opportunity to play 55-70 games as well as HS hockey! A JR C/D schedule is 36 games and OFSSA sanctioned High School hockey will not allow any JR players to play after Dec.
I have never been a huge fan of prep school hockey in Ontario, although it is taking strides every year. |

If you live in London and are a 96 you must get a release from the Junior B Nationals before you can skate with a Junior D club. At least that is what a Lambeth Junior D team official explained to me that if you are not drafted your local Junior B team owns your rights for Junior B and lower. |

Sure there are some "late bloomers", its not something to bet your kids future on though. Better to hope he's a late bloomer intellectually and something clicks in grade 12 allowing him to continue in school. Start putting your efforts on school, if he didn't go in the first 4 rounds there is little chance he will play anything but beer league. |

You assume a kid isn't a good student already. BIG assumption.
What's wrong with a kid continuing to work hard playing the game he loves, midget, tier 2 and then seeing what happens?
Worst thing that happens is he ends up playing CIS hockey and gets a degree at a Canadian university? Same result as many OHLers....
P.S. Most of the kids my son has played AAA hockey with are good to excellent students already. They don't have to give up anything to continue from an education standpoint. |

Most? Doubt it.
Grade 12 and Jr C or D hockey are a bad combo if your kid is trying to get into a good program. Grade 11 and Midget are fine for kids that managed MM and grade 10 OK. |

I think he is saying dont do D or C it is a bad combo when you are going to school, because it is party hockey and not structured. It has been said on here before if you have a good quality Midget AAA team in your area go there first (if you have been cut from B or Teir 2) Go C or D only as a lat resort |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | April 18 2012, 11:45 AM |
One 16 year old can play Jr C or D and they can not affiliate with with a higher level team. In no way should a 16 year old play, these leagues are meant for trying to win for 18-21 year old. They have no interest in developing kids. At the start of the year they get playing time but as the year goes on ice time will slow down. Older player will come in from crappy B teams so they can play there overage year or decide that school is going OK so they can return to the juniour teams and your kid will slide down the depth chart. As a 16 year old if you can't play B or Tier II then play AAA. More practices still developing players. In C or D they practice once a week and some kids don't come back from school for the practices. The last question to ask yourself is do I want my 16 year old hanging around with 19, 20 & 21 year old young men? I hope not.

Where have you beem for the last 6 months and have you been following Junior A hockey at all???
The OJHL winners, St. Mike's had 4 16 year old on their team and even a 15 year all during play offs, all of whom made significant contribution to their OJHL run. New Market also had significant contribution from their 16 year olds and so did Kingston. Actually Trenton had no 16 year old and look where they ended up, defeated in first round by a team with two 16 year olds.
The only valid point you bring out is whether or not a 16 year old should hang around 19-20 year olds. Certainly not an ideal situation but with good parenting this should not be an issue, just have to remind your boy that he is there to play hockey and develop, not to socialize. Also the development that comes along with a 16 year old by having him play against an older age group is very valuable if he plans on moving on.
Actually I would argue that Junior A is a much better route for a 16 year old than Junior B or C (especially C) as those league tend to have a bit more of a "bush/beer league" mentality. Actually to be fair to some of the top Junior B program, I will reserve this last comment towards Junior C.

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | May 9 2013, 9:34 AM |
btw, you're absolutely correct about junior hockey development however I'll make a couple of minor updates, St. Mike's really ran with 2 96's and the 1 97; 1 96 never played and the other played sparingly once injured forwards returned to the lineup, however it is completely accurate and fair to say that 3 96's (& the 1 97) contributed to their run.
Trenton's collapse was due to issues with HC Dupont. the players just tuned out his hard ass, military style. word is he's done. |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | May 9 2013, 2:02 PM |
First of all, my son is smart enough to make good decisions no matter who he hangs out with. and second of all, i had an ohl scout tell me to play at the highest level you can and then proceeded to tell me to play junior c even though our center has a top midget team. It prepares you for the next step. To each his own... |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | May 9 2013, 2:38 PM |
LOL OHL scout makes less than you pay per year for Hockey. Show me the # of players that go Junior C to OHL vs Midget to OHL bet the numbers favor Midget |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | May 9 2013, 3:13 PM |
Since a C or D team can only have one 16 year old, and a Midget team can have all, your analysis is not valid.
If your kid can handle the bigger faster play, and succeed in Junior C or D, then if not one of the teams with 1 practice a week, the OHL scouts all indicate its better for your development. Yes, at least 7 scouts from different teams have said this.
But only go if you are good enough to get played. If not, no one developed sitting on a bench.
If you make a Jr A or B team, again, only if you get played in top 6 is it worthwhile (as a fwd).
Best overall advice--go to the level where you will shine. They like those that stand out, succeed and look good doing it. Everyone likes a winner. |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | May 10 2013, 2:21 AM |
there is no difference between Jr C and Jr D just the name, I agree with few of the above posters, if you have an opportunity between C/D and good Midget AAA team I would take Midget AAA. The older guys on C/D really don't care accept for their games, don't come to practice, drinking and smoking in the parking lot. I know my boy played D and I watched what happened first hand, we were fortunate our boy did care as he got older. The other thing to look at is you cannot ap from Jr C/D to a B team only from Midget AAA, so there is truth in the statement above that there are more players moving onto OHL teams from Midget then there is from C/D (considerably more) Likewise the players moving from MIdget AAA to Junior B greatly outweigh players moving on from C. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Junior and Midget tryouts | May 10 2013, 2:48 AM |
Don't generalize all jr c/d teams cause of the one league your kid played in,
If A kid signs to a Jr C card that player is allowed to AP with Jr A team
There are quite a few Jr C teams that are run just as good if not better then some Jr A teams offering pants, gloves, helmets, sticks etc. only difference is most Jr C teams only practice max 2 times a week where most Jr A are every day
I would gladly bet money that Alliston, Essex, Grimsby, Picton etc, would be able to compete at the Jr A level |

Jr at any level is a bigger step up for any 16 year old. You are playing against players a lot older and stronger. You will still have to find some extra practice time on your own or with your local higher level teams to keep up the development. Try to play at the highest level you will get decent ice time at. |

No one can prevent your son to play at a higher level.
If your son wants to play Jr B, then either Jr B from your area offers your son a spot OR a release. |

I dont think that is correct if you are released you can go to another team.

You are wrong, they own you. They don't even have to allow you a permission to skate. Most do but they are under no mandate to. You must be a 97 dad, welcome to the world of junior hockey. The lucky ones live in grey areas but those in the city like London, Waterloo etc. are owned. |

FYI:
1. If you are not eligible for Minor Hockey anymore due to age ('95), you are free to go to any JR tryout, you do not even need a PTS.
2. If you are still eligible to play Major Midget one more year ('96) you only need PTS from your minor hockey association to go to any Jr tryout.

you must submit a completed OHA Permission to Skate Form if you were registered with an OHA team last season OR if you have a Jr.“C” team in your home center. If you were registered in minor hockey last season then you will need to have an OHF Permission Form from your minor hockey center, including 95 Midget players |
