Marlies have only 2 players on the team who are legit regarding living in the Marlies boundary. The rest are imports and it's pretty sad when Marlie parents come on here bragging about their team winning when they really are an Ontario AAA allstar team who should be restricted to playing outside Ontario teams only. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 3 2012, 5:32 PM |
Why is everyone acting as if they are forced to play for the marlies? All the players made the choice to play with them because of their unprecendented history and excellence. Dont be so jealous of a team that will most likely win the GTHL and OHL cup. Who cares if most the players are imports? They chose not to play with their hometown teams and somethig attracted them to join the Toronto Marlboros. Before you say something, my son played for the 96 Toronto Jr. Canadiens and we were swept by them first round. He would have loved the oppurtuinity to play for the marlies but unfortanetly doesn't have the skill to keep up with them. Instead of trying to find faults with the team, lets applaud and reminisice how great of a hockey team this is. The rebels have their hands full and so do the teams who face off with them during the OHL cup. Again I repeat, if a player does not want to play for the team closest to them than they SHOULD have the choice to leave and join another team. |

There are rules about jurisdiction and where people can play depending on where they live. Unfortunately the rules seem to be ignored by some organizations. That is the reason there is resentment and why people don`t like having the dominance of some teams rubbed in their face. First you break the rules and then you flaunt the success you get by breaking those rules. Not cool. |

Whats cool is your kid isnt good enough and you are jealous. If you have so much evidence of your theory take it to the proper authorities and not N54. |

No problem with allowing the Marlies to recruit from all over. They just shouldn't be able to play against teams who can't. Join the US league where the rules are the same. |

Kids have had the best coaching and the best to play with. Have had the best competition to play against. Less room for improvement. This is why G superstars don't turn into NHL players on a regular basis. With the number of high end G champions in the last decade, there are as many NHLers coming out of the O and the Alliance even. Doesn't seem to make sense given the quality and number of G players. What's the explanation? |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 3 2012, 7:14 PM |
Simple. Lack of adversity among the top teams and players that play for them year in and year out. Extra (alot extra) time and space. The current Marlie roster is a case in point.
Honestly, how many of these guys are actually hard, really hard, to play against? Enough of the idol worshiping already because as the above poster points out where are they gonna be 4 years from now?
From here on in it won't be what you can do with all the time and space on your way to a 10-0 win that would make any of our kids look good but what you do when lo and behold you don't have any time, any space and players bigger, better and stronger than you are running you down that counts.
There are maybe 3 or 4 guys that will transition well and of those talked about on here ad nauseum as top draft picks perhaps 2 others and one of them is a 97.
Enjoy the notoriety today and on April 7 cause things are about to change big time come September. And some of these guys with their own fan clubs have no idea whats comin' around the corner at them. |

Don't think we should name names so that 15 year old boys can be torn to shreds on an annonymous forum. They have a few first rounders and if you don't know who they are naming names aint gonna help you unless you are looking for an opportunity to stir.

8 in the first isnt realistic. There are orher players outside of Toronto you realize.
There'll likely be 9 Marlies and 9 Rebels picked in the first 2 rounds. As for the top 15 picks that isn't set in stone yet but the mix certainly looks pretty clear to most GM's and it includes only as few as 2 and as many as 5 Marlies depending on if McD gets exceptional status or not.
After the first 15, teams will pick a mix of who they like and who they need. Based on the names posted and if that's what folks really believe tune in April 7. You'll be surprised at the players never talked about that go and go high. As usual for hype, the list looks about half right on players if not on the round they go in. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 3 2012, 11:22 PM |
The Rebels and Marlies can account for 16 players in the first 42 selections of the upcoming OHL draft.
Marlies:
McDavid, Ho Sang, Bennett, Mckeown, Cramarossa, Allen, Addison, Desousa, Lindo
Rebels:
Fabbri, Hargraves, Bourne, Herbst, DiPerna, Jenkins, Miller, Centorame, Pastouris is a sleeper pick. |

McD would be a mistake...one good concussion away from no career. Cramarosa doubtful. Bennett not a chance in hell. Nor Addison or Lindo. Marlie parents are delusional. Do you have any idea what's out there beyond Canlan Etobicoke? |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 5 2012, 8:32 AM |
Everyone under estimates McD. His by far the best player on the Marlies. Will he have struggles playing against 19 year olds sure but not withstanding where they get drafted there is probably only 3 or 4 Marlies that will have sustainabilty in th OHL. CMcD, RM, JL, maybe JHS |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 5 2012, 8:35 AM |
No-one under-estimates McD. It has been known for a long time he is an eilte player.
BIG risks for him playing in a MAN'S league at his size. What is the rush? |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 5 2012, 9:06 AM |
Enough of this bullshit about "yeah they're good but lucky if they are around in a couple of years" bulkshit.
Fact: 8 94's currently ranked by NHL Central Scouting for this years upcoming draft.
Fact: 5 93's drafted in the NHL IN THE FIRST 2 ROUNDS last year plus Dougie Hamilton who went to St Catherines in his MM year only because his older brother Freddie (also a 92 Marlie drafted in the NHL the year before) went to the Icedogs.
This may have been a ridiculous thread to begin with but before you start flapping your yaps about these kids get your facts straight. The reality is A LOT of them are gonna be around for a long time like it or not. Speak to an agent/scout or call up your local OHL team for confirmation but believe it or not the 96 group is the deepest group to come along in recent memory. |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 5 2012, 9:26 AM |
I like how you include former Marlies in your stats but don't exclude all the kids who have been parachuted into this 96 team in recent years from Huron Perth, YSE, Brampton, Markham et al.
Convenient. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 5 2012, 9:44 AM |
The criticism of these players revolves around how many of them (Marlies) will be around in a few years and not how many kids from Huron Perth, YSE, Markham etc. will be around.
I included a kid (9th overall NHL) not because he was "parachuted" into the St Catherine's Falcons- he was- because his older brother went to Niagara but because he was a Marlie.
There isn't anything convenient about the facts. They just are and all this talk about them not being around in a few years is nonsense. They will, and in spades. Regardless of where they came from. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 5 2012, 9:51 AM |
97 marlies group is built on exactly the same model: recruit from everywhere, promise to field a powerhouse, don't worry about import rules, have parent groups run the teams for the sake of possibly getting compensation for having players drafted. This once proud organization has totally lost sight of what good looks like. Good is about teaching life lessons of honesty and integrity in competition. Shame on you Toronto Marlboroughs organization, and shame on you parents for buying in to this crap. And congratulations on all your hardware which somehow justifies all of this. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 5 2012, 9:53 AM |
If you know anything about Ken Strong you know parent groups don't run his team. Kids play his system or don't play, potential 1st rounder or not.
Facts are your friend. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 5 2012, 10:06 AM |
Of course the hardware justifies it. Are you serious. It's about winning hockey games not teaching life lessons. If life lessons are learned along the way so be it. This still proud organization hasn't lost sight of a damn thing- winning hockey games.
If your point is they put wins together dishonestly is that because they recruit the best from anywhere? How in the hell is that relevant? If someone in your town can help win hockey games and the team has import spots available how is that dishonest?
And who the hell is taking such a personal interest in one family's marital status? Shame on YOU. Didn't this family sacrifice and relocate to Toronto and isn't their son going to a local school also.
Now I'd say THAT is an example of sacrificing ones own interest in what they feel is in the best interest of their son. I don't know where they came from but if some of you folks are the ones they left behind I can sure as hell understand why they left.

|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 5 2012, 11:53 AM |
The fact remains that Hockey Canada prohibits moving to another minor hockey center for the purpose of playing hockey. The Marlies for years have moved 100s of families to the G strictly for the reason of playing hockey while on paper they claim employment changes, school or divorces when if any 2 nd grade prosecutor were to investigate these shady transfers half the GTHL executive would be wearing prison jumpsuits. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 5 2012, 12:07 PM |
1153 1st truly honest thing you've said. The sad truth is no one at Hockey Canada ever investigates further. It is all the way the paperwork is written snd ensuring its accuracy. Everyone knows people move for hockey then school and jobs come later. To blame the Marlies only is just as unfair. The GTHL wants to see its league as the top league so it does not undress a pig. |

Hold on a sec sparky. Firstly, the OHF and not Hockey Canada has the authority to implement and secondly, no where does it say that families can't pick up and relocate strictly for the purpose of playing hockey and I challenge you to show us otherwise.
Get over it. An habitual residence is just that and that is all you need in lieu of a release. Nobody in a free and democratic society can tell you you aren't free to move or change jobs or get separated or divorced for purposes of hockey or any other damn purpose you choose.
You might not agree but your disagreement and the "rules" aren't one and the same. |

Sample of Marlies sure-fire first rounders, where are they now?
2001 Ryan Hastings went 17th overall, Rane Carnegie 18th overall
2003 Chris Lawrence went 6th overall
2004 Justin DiBeneddeto went 18th overall
2005 Akim Aliu went 6th overall, Bryan Cameron 8th overall
2007 Ethan Werek went 9th overall, Michael Zador went 20th overall
Point is, chillax with the predictions already. There is a long, long road ahead for all these kids to earn a single penny from playing this game. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 5 2012, 2:53 PM |
2001 Ryan Hastings went 17th overall - Burnt out
Rane Carnegie 18th overall - Burnt out
2003 Chris Lawrence went 6th overall - 7-8 years of AHL $, now in Europe getting paid
2004 Justin DiBeneddeto went 18th overall - AHL being Paid 6 figures (Under contract to the NY Islanders)
2005 Akim Aliu went 6th overall - AHL being Paid 6 figures (Under Contact to the Calgary Flames)
Bryan Cameron 8th overall - AHL being Paid 6 figures (Under Contact to the Calgary Flames)
2007 Ethan Werek went 9th overall - AHL being Paid 6 figures (Under Contact to the NY Rangers)
Michael Zador went 20th overall - Free university
So of these 8 'worst of' players you found, 4 are under contract to an NHL team, one has free university, one hard a solid AHL/Europe salary, and two burnt out.
If thats the WORST of them, damn.......

Guess it depends on your perspective. Between my wife and I we probalby make $200k a year, more than the average Canadian I guess. At the same time, living in the GTA is expensive.
Given these guys played for the Marlies they will probably return to the area once hockey has ended.
Given what you suggest is a good salary currently (personally I don't agree), without any kind of trade or education other than running a hockey school I can only see their incomes declining.
If this is what you envision as a good life for your son, go for it!
Personally, I've always encouraged my son to aim high and so far he has. |

Those were only the first rounders that have not made the show since 2000.
Many more Marlies have washed out of hockey completely. I know of one who played on Rick Nash's line back in the day. He is a warehouseman for a Tire Company in Brampton. Whoohoo, good times! |

So in 11 years, there are only 4 that are not making money playing hockey? How many players is that, like 60? That goes against what bitter dads claim, the 'where are they in 4 years crap'. 56/60 are getting paid good money to play hockey, thats impressive. |

You can't use the last 3-4 years as they have not yet graduated to pro hockey yet.
In some years there were no Marlies chosen in the 1st round.
Again, it depends on your definition of "good money." |

The 2005 Marlies (89's) were by far the best team the marlies ever had. There is at least 9 playing pro hockey. They had 4 first rounders and would of had 7 but 3 of them had other commitments. 7 went on to be nhl draft picks. 3 in the first round, 2 seconds, 1 third and 1 in the 4th......pretty impressive! |

Why does TM have players that do not see any ice? |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 5 2012, 9:56 PM |
Coaches dictate ice time, just like any team. There are lots of kids who sit more than they should (or think they should). Nothing new or different with that. |

The marlie program needs money andso players are allowed to pay to be along for the ride but not play. There were two players on this years team - one left mid year to make more room on the bench for No. 6.
Good for the marlies for pulling these types as it take a special parent to do this to his kid. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toronto Marlies: Most first Rounders Ever | March 6 2012, 8:35 AM |
That happens on every team thou. I saw an OMHA team sit another player for 2-3 games, why whernt you up in arms on that.
And as the other poster said, if the kid is fine with it, why do you care? |

Thank you for thinking of me, I feel so very honoured that you would actually consider my feelings on your glorious and record-setting march through the dregs of 1996 Minor midget hockey.
Oh truly you are worthy of our praise and respect. A million thank you's to you and a tear has just welled up in my eye to consider your wonderful benevolence! |

Word is that the OHF is voting this week to have an asterisk etched beside every Marlie championship due to all their illegal tampering, recruitment and poaching when they bought their team for this season. |

Say whatever you will but housekeeping is in order and some very good hockey players get to play at a level they otherwise wouldn't. Is this because they beat you or because your little star wasn't asked to play....likely both |
