how does one make a team at one of these things? In my experience, they are all just fundraisers with teams already picked

Sorry. my son has been playing houseleage for two years and I want to make the jump to Rep.

Best chance is at A. Most teams might be picked, but any decent coach at that level will retain a spot or two for a walk on. Obviously he'll have to shine for the coach to select him. If it doesn't work, next year start calling coaches end Nov for them to go watch him.

Actually the teams have to pay for the try-out ice, so whatever money they make goes towards that.

If you want to make the jump from HL, I would start by calling some of the A coaches (they are listed on the tryout section of the GTHL web site) to see what teams are still looking for players. You don't want to waste your time and money going to tryouts for teams that don't have any sports left. Also, it is unlikely a top 5 team will take a HL player, so I would look at mid-pack teams.

If A doesn't work out, the NYHL select tryout start in early May and may be a stepping stone from HL to the GTHL.
