The USHL is the highest junior league south of the boarder. It is the US equivalent of the CHL. The main difference is that your child, if good enough, maintains their NCAA eligibility while playing in this league.

The NAHL is a good lower level league that trys to showcasemidget level talent for advancement to higher leagues and ultimately the NCAA. A lot of weekend based hockey and many strong NCAA players have come out of both leagues and moved up.

There is an advantage here in that your son, ifdrafted to an OHL team, and uncertain what to do, could play in one of these leagues and come to the OHL at a later date if the option or desire to play NCAA is no longer their. Also, the top kids in minor midget will get some interest from UHSL clubs prior to the OHL draft.

The thing to remember is it is not easy to get a full ride as a Canuck anymore. Canadian female players are still getting a fair amount of scholarship south of the boarder but not males. Not BS... friends have been through it and I listen to them all. Pleasedont think your non-drafted child will be awalk-on in these leagues.... you have to hae skill. However, the more you are wanted south of the boarder, the more the CHL will come after you....happens all the time!

a Canadian player is also eligible for the USHL/ NAHL draft. Like the OHL the USHL alsohas an annual combine !

There are import rules to consider. FIrst, as a 16 yr. you must be a resident in the US. Something to do with Hockey Canada and USA Hockey. Once you are 17 you are free to go play without any issues. The USHL allows 4 imports. Many teams carry kids from Europe and Russia, not just CAN. If you look though a few USHL rosters you will find some Ontario kids who are or have played in these leagues. Look them up

"There are import rules to consider. FIrst, as a 16 yr. you must be a resident in the US."

Not necessarily true.

Any Canadian can play in the USHL if he and his parents up and move to the US.

The other option would be to transfer legal guardianship to someone in the US and have him live with this new legal guardian.

Facts are your friend.

Yes. The word resident in the sentence would mean he would be living in the US. Here is the definition.

Resident, a person who maintains residency (domicile) in a given place.

As pointed out, there are rules regarding 16 yr olds. You can not simply pick up and go. That is why you would transfer guardianship.

Fact are you friend but so are brains. Read the post next time.

If you want to rank the non Major Jr options here is a good start

1) USHL - the best development, fan base and funding in North Am. Avg. attendance in the thousands, many top rate facilities and top coaching. The top rated development league that fills college hockey rosters. Proximity to top rated NCAA school is good for scouting. Well scouted and respected by all NCAA D1 and D3 schools.

2) BCHL - Has gained significant ground in Canada. Many top schools are making the trip to BC to scout players. Quality teams, good ownership and less very little nepotism. Smaller league that weeds out the lower level players.

3) OJHL - Starting to turn things around but struggles with nepotism, some of it over the top. The contraction plan is working but to truly be an elite league Tier 2 JR A should carry a max of 20 teams. 16 would be perfect. Top quality hockey, a better fan base and less room for the dreaded parent owner.

4) NAHL - a stepping stone for players who want to move into the USHL. Above midget but below Jr. Canadians can get the same level of play or better from Jr B. There is movement between the USHL and NAHL on a regular basis like the Jr. A, Jr B,C movement making it attractive if you have your eye on the USHL.

Qualify better. The four teams that played for the National Championship in Tampa had rosters built on the following. These numbers also include recruited players that are committed through 2015.

USHL - 64 Players
High School & Prep - 20
BCHL - 17
NAHL - 15
SJHL - 6
EJHL - 6
OJHL - 3

If the hockey in the BCHL was better than the USHL wouldn't you see better recruiting numbers on rosters or future commitments?

What is clear is the USHL is a big recruiting ground for the NCAA. Numbers tell the story. Both the BCHL and USHL are fielding 16 teams so the number of potential recruits playing in these leagues is the same. Thats said you need to give some weight to the proximity of USHL teams to these schools. Running the BCHL looking for the same player you can find in the U is pointless.
