%pct save is the real measure gaa not so much.
If you are on a top team that does not allow the opposing team to get even close to the goalie or shoot there will be a lot
less goals against and vice versa. However the %pct says something about the goalie although the higher the number of shots
the more accurate it is.. if you team allows only one shot and the goalie saves that's 100% if it's in that's 0%... |

...and that's also why good goalies will not play for a top team. |

way to make a generalisation, so if you are a goalie on a top team you must suck whereas the kid on the bottom team is by defacto the best goalie in the league. there are much more skill sets to evaluate then simply GAA and save%, as well as the intangibles. Need to evaluate each kid on and off the ice...not just look at stats. |

The problem is that scouts are lazy and like to rely on team stats when picking goalies. My experience is that goalies on top teams are chosen over goalies from bottom teams even though the goalies on bottom teams typically have better save percentages. Shots on goal is a statistic that is not formally recorded so it carries little weight (especially because its usually one of the goalie parents that keeps track). The goalies drafted this year had two things in common (for the most part): 1) at least 6' tall,
2) On a top team (1-6). |

Another vital statistic a goalie picks up playing on a good team is the all coveted "W". Again, if stats are looked at by scouts, this is a big one. |

Right.... The scouts are lazy. Every single one of them knows more about hockey than most parents can dream of or choose to admit. Goalies on top teams have developed into top goaltenders for the most part, not saying they are the best in the league, but they are clearly being relied upon to make the big save. All of this, "the best goalies play on the worst teams to get more shots" is crap. That's not how it works, and scouts are well aware of this. Save percentage and GAA are team dependent and that is taken into account when drafting. If a goalie on a bad team cannot handle the speed of a top Minor Midget team, how are they going to handle Jr or the O? It's all team dependent, and skill is independently analyzed, so parents can stop with "the scouts know nothing". Good luck to ALL goalies in the upcoming year. |

To enhance your last point - who do the goalies on top teams practice 2 or 3 times per week with? They see the quality shots & scoring chances a lot with their own team, which makes them better & ready for when those chances arise during games. Are there good goalies play on lower-end teams? Definitely. Are there some stinky goalies on high-end teams? Some squeak through, yes. But to generalize either way is wrong. |

GAA and Save % mean nothing...many kids had better stats than some of goalies that were drafted last season.
What matters, if you want your kid to get drafted, is that you;
1) Suck up to the coach & coaching staff - Can't stress this enough. Coffees, laughing at all their jokes, etc. The thicker you pile it on the farther your kid will go.
2) Sponsor the team..
3) Hire an advisor. You must do this without question...seriously. The advisor will pump your kid day and night to anyone and everyone, especially people connected.
4) Play in your own home centre. The hicks down in the SCTA / Alliance don't like outsiders...and will slag your kid whenever they get the chance, (behind your back of course). Remind them that they shouldn't marry their sister...that always strikes a nerve for some reason. Play the Deliverance theme song whenever you can...
That's how your kid gets drafted...not hard work, not skating lessons, not off-ice training and not talent.
Just good marketing...

And promote your kid like crazy, there is one 97 parent who has this mastered, but they are a nice family. |

4:45 is actually pretty accurate. Scary but true. |

445 You are so correct. Size matters apparently and that is it. Oh, and if your parent offers services to an OHL team. That too. And a bad attitude and work ethic is a plus. |

Get on the good side of the goalie school owners. They are the ones that will evaluate and pick their own students for obvious reasons. That is what happened with the U17 Alliance. Connections, not talent. |

Just buy a Jr A team for your kid. That's what many have done.

the GAA stat is more indicative of the team system and coach. |

...or lack thereof, ie a cowboy run-n-gun coach. |

Goalies technical and agility skills are more important than GAA or save%, agree with above, if team is playing run ' gun then goalie is left to his own. As a goalie parent I prefer the run n' gun approach, means my kid will gets lots of work compared to a defensive team. If he is good people will look past stats. |

Not always. Goalies on lower end teams aften get overlooked (unless your dad does business with an OHL team and you get drafted in the 15th round). |

Someone is bugged. Does promoting your kid frequently on N54 and then making posts that it is horrible that someone is doing it and then making posts saying what a great family they are and they would never do that help in getting your kid drafted? |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Goalie save % and GAA | May 4 2012, 7:08 PM |
I don't give a shit on draft. All that matters is my son to see lots of rubber and become better and better. If is he is meant to go pro it will happen one day no matter of Minor Midget draft.
One year from now many of you will figure out OHL draft means nothing, especially for goalies. |

My kid see's lots of rubber as well, tells me he is getting layed 3 or 4 times a week and is using protection, and he is not pimping. |

30 goalie were drafted this past month. 26/30came from Ontario-based club and the other 4 from US-based clubs. Of the 26 Ontario based goaltenders drafted only 7/26 came from losing teams. Rightly or wronly ..... winning matters! |

Yes, it matters, it is just not about draft year only. It does not matter where you start it matters where you end |
