What is the GMHL?

I have a nephew from Germany that is apparently close to coming to a pay-to-play team in Ontario in a league called Greater Metro Hockey League? I tried doing a google search and most of the websites for the teams seem pretty unprofessional.

Anyone have any experience or info on this league, is it worth the money for him?

If you are paying them, that should tell you something. Stay away unless you have cash to blow.

Alright, so the 2 GTHL employees above have a problem with the GMHL.

There's nothing wrong with the league, I'd call it a development league somewhere between M AAA and Jr. A.

And as for the comment that it's a pay for play, isn't that what you're doing in the GTHL?

"There's nothing wrong with the league, I'd call it a development league somewhere between M AAA and Jr. A."

ok, I can see where the league serves a purpose, but buyer beware when you say it's a viable "development league".

it's been around for 6 years and has never had a player drafted by the NHL. T2 on the other hand averages 3 a year.

they have only moved 2 players (Archibald and Windsor) to the O.

they have not had any D1 scholarships, however, granted they have had many players get D3 financial assistance.

there's been more players move directly from midget to the O than thru here. let's not even begin to compare how many have moved to the next level, either the O or NCAA D1, from T2 or even jr B.

that's not a very good track record as a development league.

that's a little too harsh IMHO.

if a kid who may have been marginalized out of T2/B, has a shot a D3 package (providing his parents are prepared to pony up approx $15K per year), then who are we to argue? seriously?

I agree with you in the larger sense, but as I said before it still serves a purpose for many.

You can call it pay to play however compare your AAA league which has two practices a week and dryland, GMHL minimum 8 practices a week dryland every day and games only on week ends. They are currently working on developing younger players onto the NCAA route and have personal tutors and have special arrangements with schools. The GMHL works for you to get you either to NCAA or perhaps Europe in some capacity. How about the boys that are currently playing for their respective home countries in the IIHF. You know little and in as little as 6 years they have improved by leaps and bounds every year. Don't worry we don't want your boy with your type of attitude so its not a big deal

OP, tell your nephew to contact his home countries governing body. There are strict IIHF regulations that must be followed when playing in another country, ignore the transfer protocol and the kid will be jammed up.

Tell the kid to ignore the re assurances from outlaw league salesmen. Get independent advice, specifically ask about playing in an unsanctioned league in another country and not completing transfer documentation.

7:49, tone it down with the NCAA fluff.

there has been maybe 1 Division 1 scholarship in 6 years. the rest are D3 assistance packages.

you make it sound like the league is a hotbed for D1 scholarships. 8:02 is right - stick to selling appliances.

NEW...no you don't. For slightly more you can get a gently used pre-owned, that fridge will have all the problems a new appliance has already fixed! If you're serious about little Johnny playing at a high level he should be eating food at room temperature anyways.

it appears that people are blind to facts. Two players were drafted to NHL this year, 4 players to OHL and so many to D3 and Europe. There might be something said for pay to play.

Bullshit. Who? No player who spend DEVELOPMENT time in the GMHL went to the NHL. Clint Windsor's three weeks has with Inisfill has nothing to do with him being in the OHL.

Lets see this list of names.

Alumni in International Competition
by Sean Werth

The IIHF U18 World Championships and IIHF World Championships are two of the largest tournaments in international competition. Both tournaments are set to take place within the next couple months. Rosters are slowly being released for each respected country and already four GMHL alumni have been named to international teams. These include Nikita Jevpalovs (Captain of U18 Team Latvia), Nemanja Jankovic (Serbia), Martijn Oosterwijk (Netherlands), and Greg Hyde (Austrilia).

South Muskoka Alumnus Nikita Jevpalovs has been named captain of Team Latvia in the upcoming IIHF U18 World Junior Championship. The heavily scouted tournament will be the last chance players to showcase their talents to NHL scouts for the upcoming 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Jevpalovs, who has a history of excelling in international competition, is expected to go in this year’s NHL draft. In the U20 World Junior Championship Nikita led Team Latvia in scoring with five points in six games, despite being the youngest player on the team.

Nemanja Jankovic played three seasons in the GMHL for the Bradford Rattlers, helping to lead the Rattlers to their two Russell Cup titles. The Rattlers helped Nemanja move to the NCAA’s Finlandia University, where he has spent the past four seasons as a front line forward for the university. In the 2009-10 season, he finished second in team scoring with 11 goals for Finlandia. Jankovic will be representing his country Serbia in the World Championships this year.

Martijn Oosterwijk is a goaltender from the Netherlands and will be representing his country in this year’s World Championship. In the GMHL, Oosterwijk started for the Powasson Dragons in 2009-2010. Powasson was able to get Oosterwijk a starting job in his home country’s top professional league, where he played last season. This is Martijn’s first World Championship selection.

Former Elliot Lake Bobcat and Nipissing Allouette Greg Hyde will be playing for Team Australia in the World Championships this year. Greg spent two years in the GMHL, scoring 60 points in 75 games for his junior career. Greg’s development in the GMHL allowed him to land a spot in Australia’s top professional league, where he is playing now.

Congratulations to all of our Alumni on their achievements. Being named as a top player in your country is a great accomplishment, and no small feat. The GMHL takes much pride in developing hockey players which are making a impact beyond their junior years.

My AAA son (undrafted) 16 years old could play for Serbia or Holland....joke accomplishment.

P.S. Jamaica and Qatar were just given hockey teams acceptance into the IIHF. Any GMHL grads stepping up for those powerhouses soon? LOL

The Perth Thunder were founded in 2010. On 28 November 2010, Perth Thunder were granted a provisional license with the AIHL for the 2011 season, with the intention of entering the league to compete as the ninth team in the 2012 AIHL season.[1][2] In 2011 the Thunder played a number of exhibition games against several AIHL teams. In May the Thunder travelled to Adelaide to compete in two games against the Adelaide Adrenaline. They drew the first game 2–2 and won the second 3–0.[3] In June the Melbourne Ice travelled to Perth to compete in two games against the Thunder at the Cockburn Ice Arena. The Ice won the first game 4–3 and lost the second game 3–6 after letting in six goals to none in the final period.[4][5] In September the Newcastle North Stars traveled to Perth to play the Thunder in a two game series.[6] The Thunder won both the first and second game 4–2.[7] On 16 October 2011 the AIHL voted to include the Perth Thunder as the ninth team to join the league.[8]

LMFAO
he made a team that has not even played a single game in the TOP Australian pro league.

Don't see why it matters, if people want to pay to play let them and if you do not agree with this league existing just stay away from it.

I didn't make those posts, but someone has been actively promoting the GMHL on this site recently. that guy is making the counterpoint to the league's marketing fluff.

unless you can call bullshit on him, then heed your own "ignore the post" advice and move on.
