Re: U-17 Cornwall July.4-9/12

July 7 2012, 5:14 PM

Day 1 Scores: Black 3 Red 2 and White 4 Orange 0.
Day 2 Scores: Orange 6 Red 3 and Black 5 White 3.

So far my Ontario team Would look like this:

Sam Bennett Connor McDavid Spencer Watson
Brendan Perlini Robert Fabbri Andrew Abou-Assaly
Josh Ho-Sang Michael Dal Colle Jeremiah Addison
Damian Bourne Eric Cornel Jaden Lindo
Jared McCann

Michael Cramarossa and Keegan Blasby have looked strong as well.

Roland McKeown Kevin Spinozzi
Dylan Diperna Matthew Watson
Jacob Middleton Kyle Locke
Travis Dermott

Daniel Desousa could easily be in top six with his play but when his white team got back in the game with the black team (down 3-0 to down 4-3) and momemtum in there favor, he gets mad, cross checks a kid for a 2 min minor and then to dispute the call cross checks another kid right into the ref on the way to the box for another two min minor resulting in four minutes in penalties. Out comes team blacks Connor McDavid, Spencer Watson, and Alexanre Renaud and the game is over within first 25 seconds of the four min power play.

However, until that point Desousa was in the top 6 before both Locke and Middleton. Maybe disapline won't keep him off but for me today in this halfway point personal opinion mock team it has.

Still two more games each and three months of ohl hockey to play though before final roster is picked so lots of time to change my irrelevant mind and get on to the minds of the real hockey canada people picking final team.

Goog luck to all players!

July 8 2012, 8:29 PM

Great weekend of hockey for all the boys.
In my mind there was not one player who completely
Dominated in this event. Mcdavid was the best playe but did not take over like he normally does.
Dissapoinents:
Damien Bourne - looked out if place all weekend.
Schmaltz - continues to struggle
Roland M. Not his. Best hockey weekend.
McCann- did not find anyone to gel with on white team.
Burgess- third round come on

The rest of the others drafted in first 2-3 rounds played as expected , very good.

Surprises:
Kyle petit - looked good replaceing nick petty
Desousa - played very tough and made some nice rushes
Murphy- good speed great Hustle and team player .
Lindo- always knew he was a bull but showed good hands also.
Blasby-good honest hard working player .
Dalcole - more speed than I saw last year.
Sam Bennett -real good player.

I could name 50 others here as all boys played very well.

White team was very good, balanced team. Fwds had lots of ammo. D had mix of skill and toughness. Goalies were adequate and sometimes good. Didnt get tested much except for some transition game by Black team IMO.
Very good hockey overall. Fast paced and great puck movement for players that most hadnt played with before.

Re: U-17 Cornwall July.4-9/12

July 9 2012, 8:23 AM

Black played White in the Final. Black was out to a big lead (think it was 4-1) and white came storming back. Penalties hurt White early, but the Fwds started to click and D got a couple nice goals early in the third. Tied 4-4 late in game, White ended up winning in OT.
thought cm was tired in this game, white had too much power at the end of the game. Thought all 4 goalies played well.
White D in my mind were the strongest of the bunch. White Fwds were quick, relentless and all could shoot the puck.
Great few days of hockey!

Last chance to pimp your kids after years of pimping. Lots of great players this past week, hard to say someone really really stood out after a small amount of games. Lets just say for arguements sake that all the G players are the best and make all their dads happy. Now lets go to junior and really see.

Re: U-17 Cornwall July.4-9/12

July 9 2012, 11:09 AM

To 8:46,

Sorry if i offended you, I assure u my name is not Mr. Watson. I was only able to attend the first two games of each team and these were the players that stood out to me the most. As a previous poster said the white team was the most well rounded and mw and kyle locke should well in those two games shutting down cm, sw, ar line. Cm, Sw, Ar, had two points each but scored the only two times they weren't out against Kl and Mw.

Mw lacks one thing, Size. Didn't stop him though, laid out hargraves in second game who is suppose to be a big power forward.

Mw has lots of tools from what i could see. Mw has speed, skill, let off the two hardest shots i seen from the point, ability to rush, and few possess a first pass like him.

Lay off the size and give some of these smaller players a chance. Where would
Ottawa be without Erik Karlsson or to a lesser extent where will toronto be gardiner in a few years.

I knew i would be labeled a dad when i decided to include both of the brothers but i figured it would be a lot quicker then this.

If u were there you would not be making this statement because at this level with the top players of the age group in attendence you kinda felt sorry for the bigger guys. The bigger players just seem to be a couple steps behind the play all the time.

Again i am not a dad of the watson twins or anyone in attendence for that matter but am a fan of the game within distance of cornwall to drive back and forth to catch a couple games multiple days.

It's all a bit irrelevant anyway isn't it?

No one was "cut" after Cornwall. Not to mention, someone could jump out completely in their first OHL season that wasn't even in Cornwall (unlikely BUT possible) and make the FINAL team.

From here on in these things are a process, a long and winding road to build a TEAM for elite competitions. You can throw the rulebook out the window.

11:49, just because they are not household names ala Stamkos or JT doesn't mean they are either dusters or assholes.

I'll never understand the point of listing names of players just to say what they have done or what they are doing now is meaningless.

the bottom line is they have accomplished more in the game than the jackass posting about them.

posts like that really show the ignorance and bitterness of the poster rather than anything to do with the player.

what's the end game to a post like that? pull your kid out of hockey because .00000000000001% of all players will "make it"?

oh, life's tough? really? seriously?

holy fak, we had no clue.

Right....what about the other 250 kids?

Equating size to being a man is interesting.

So a 6'5 160 lb grade 9 kid is a man?

You're a knob.

You generalize by claiming and I qoute "These (smaller) guys outmuscled their bigger counterparts much of the camp!"

Did you watch and record every battle in every game throughout the camp to make your statement above? No, you made assumptions based on your viewings.

Let me guess, your kid is one of the "smaller" players?

If you can't admit the OHL contains alot of men, size, strength, maturity or not your smaller guy is going to be in for a rude awakening come training camp.

Wow.

P.S. Go have a look at a few sample rosters on OHL teams and tell yourself there aren't men playing in that league. Dumbass.

Unless you do a google search you have no idea if they have managed to move on in pro hockey or not.

That was the point and I got it. Reading comprehension is an awesome skill.

"If you can't admit the OHL contains alot of men, size, strength, maturity or not your smaller guy is going to be in for a rude awakening come training camp."

2:52, I agree. however all UA's have a huge adjustment period regardless of size.

it helps at 16 to have some size for sure, eg ROTY Ekblad, although the speed, conditioning, systems knowledge and experience isn't there needless to say. they get a feel for it by December then almost all of them hit a wall in Feb.

you're right tho, lots of very big boys in the O.

Re: U-17 Cornwall July.4-9/12

July 9 2012, 4:16 PM

My son is a 96, undrafted but skating with OHL and junior players. He is not small, 6'1" 190lbs. but the maturity physically isn't there yet despite the fact he is working like a fiend in the gym. You can just see it in puck battles, speed of decision making, etc.

I can now see midget hockey is the best move for him to grow and mature more and I would say for the majority of kids.

Good luck to those who play in the OHL next season, but realistically speaking most if not all will only make an impact in the following year.

Many others will realize quickly in camp it is a very tough demanding league physically and mentally for a 16 year old.

jeez I'm only a Lieutenant? maybe that's a good thing, lol.

although indulge me for a moment, can't the very same post be made in every thread here? perhaps even multiple times in a single thread?

so maybe we should just cut to the chase and say: "the U-17 invites will be in the beer leagues the same as the undrafted kids."

hey why not? it's just as random putting up a list of 2012 NHL undrafted OHL 1st round kids cause the underlying point is the same: let's trivialize a group of kids and any accomplishments they had.

July 9 2012, 9:31 PM

I would have to agree. My 96 is playing with Jr A players right now and you can see a huge difference in their physic and strength on the ice. Even the shorter Jr players are much stronger than the 16 year old. Unless the 16 year old developed early (like 2 years earlier than everyone else) than they just aren't at the same level of strength. Over the past few years, you could see the kids that had matured early had the big advantage in their own age group. Look at the first round picks...a lot of these kids hit puberty two years ago. They are basically two years ahead in strength development than most of the 16 year olds right now that have just hit puberty this year. These are the kids that I could see stepping into the OHL this year and I guess that is what the scouts see. The smaller kids will need to grow and develop and get stronger before they will be ready. Remember, U17 is still the majority of 16 year olds, not 19 and 20 year olds.

6:09am You're not too bright are you?

There will be significant differences in size/strength/speed for those minor midgets breaking into the OHL. Same thing for graduating OHLers into the NHL. It all takes time physically.

Btw, the bench press is not a great predictor for hockey strength tests anyway. The prevailing direction is total functional body strength, particularly from the waist down. If they had squat tests, you might be able to say something. Bench press is more indicative of strength for a sport like football.

I honestly didn't think people were truly this naiive. My bad.

Not with this age group, but just curious for future reference, of the 20 ohl first rounders, "approximately" how many of them actually/should make the Ontario U17 team or about how many will not make it? based on previous years ,etc... I mean, a team has approx. 20 players, and there are 20 first rounders... it must be pretty tough to crack the lineup if you're not one of the first rounders.... Thanks for the heads up

Americans also made up some of the first rounders.

Don't forget that not every first rounder "shines" in their first year. Last year David PErklin had a real tough rookie season and was not chosen to the U17's.

Those that shine the brightest as 16 year old rookies will comprise this team, 1st, 2nd or 10 rounder!

Btw, in the past kids like Robert Polessello (alternate) and Daniel Altshuller have also made the team despite playing as 16 year olds in the OPJHL.

Great accomplishment for any players not drafted in the first 2 rounds to get on the '40- watch' that will be published shortly. It is a very deep year. Many of the 80 players in Cornwall were drafted after the 5th round and some not drafted at all.

biggest issue is in goal, only 2 16 yr olds will be in the O next year RH and LH

neither were at U17 camp - problem is how much playing time will both of these guys get? Not much as a rookie, so should U17 take a or 2 16 yr old goalies from tier 2 or Jr B or even Midget AAA?

Being signed by an OHL team and actually getting minutes are two different things. Check out who one of the four (CB) signed by Sudbury is related to and then you will start to realize anything is and will be possible.

All scouts I spoke to this past season contradict your assertion. The draft was very deep, save for high-end defencemen.

As with all of these things, we will only really know in a few years with the NHL draft and then a few years after that in terms of how many of these kids actually turn pro.

Re: U-17 Cornwall July.4-9/12

1 last year.

there are usually 1 or 2 non-O players selected depending on how many have elected an NCAA path.

here's some U-17 stats I posted when this discussion came up before.

Year ..... # of non-OHL players ..... # of 1st rnd players (on the 22 man roster)
2012 ..... 1 ..... 18
2011 ..... 2 ..... 15
2010 ..... 2 ..... 18
2009 ..... 0 ..... 16
2008 ..... 2 ..... 13
2007 ..... 2 ..... 11
2006 ..... 3 ..... 12

the camps are important, however the rubber will really meet the road with exhibition games beginning Aug 31, then the reg season on Sep 20. so there's 10 critical weeks before the team is announced in mid November.

no midget kids as the late bloomers are still developing their game and/or developing physically.

Damian Bourne Eric Cornel Jaden Lindo
Jared McCann

Michael Cramarossa and Keegan Blasby have looked strong as well.

Roland McKeown Kevin Spinozzi
Dylan Diperna Matthew Watson
Jacob Middleton Kyle Locke
Travis Dermott

Agree with most. Thought Addison looked a little tired at times, and/or uninterested. Mckeown showed great patience with the puck. Locke was good in D end, not so good with the puck outside his end. Others looked good from what I saw.

problem with your names above, 75% of them are not team players, too many individuals, all top players in draft will not be taken.

coaching staff will have role players before individual players.

Your list above will be 50% correct, mark it

bottom line is you need to show hockey ontario you are a team player

Putting him in the same category as L.H. , DADDY, is a little ridiculous. Let's get real !! Not even close. I understand he was not even the number one on midget team past season. Just because you know someone on Sting that does you a favour, I would keep my mouth shut so I didn't end up with egg on my face, like last week's results. Just a little advice. I believe RH is the best goalie in the Alliance, he was screwed at the Alliance camp, RH will be in sarnia next season as the #2 goalie.

RH was the #1 goalie in Kitchener last year.

As for defense I did not like M Watson or the last guy mentioned. You need to add guys like peters and Wood to the mix, both played very well, both could be in the OHL in Sept.

Oh and yes BH and his mother looked good in Cornwall...

Good teams are build from the net out something you genuises are forgetting when taking stabs at your dream teams. Based on what I saw, I take Taylor and Singh. No two goalies compete more. That's what you want. Then roll the dice on the rest of the selections as the talent level is that good.

Jared McCann Eric Cornel Jaden Lindo

So who is the checking line?
But most important who goes in the corner and gets the puck at both ends of the ice????

Knee injury.

No doubt all the bleeding hearts will jump in that that's not fair. Hey, get used to it....from here on in it is all about who the powers that be believe is the best at each position at the time.

Lots of eventual superstars were passed over for the U20 team and they have done alright. See Tyler Seguin.

LH didn't make it out of the GTHL camp. He wasn't injured at that point,...beyond the third degree burns on his neck. He was, to be kind, less than average in Toronto.
Would be amazed to see him get even minimal minutes with the Knights. His style will get exposed at the next level.

If u know the London Knights they have usually 10 goalies on hand and LH will be lucky to see any minutes he will be shuffled around jr B and jr D unless he proves himself. The Knights just said last week they'll be looking to trade for a #1 goalie ... So obviously none in the stable are ready and LH is also having injury issues just from practice time.

Even the Hunters dont know who will be starting in September. LH might get an exh game or backup duty, but if he doesnt step up he will be stepped out. That's just the reality in the OHL.

Talking about goalies (and players too), if anyone thinks they will take a non drafted goalie over any of the drafted goalies for the u17 final team, they are living in a dreamers world.

Enjoy the ride as in December, it will end.

All my picks are based on what i saw at camp and not what i saw all year. These are the guys that i thought performed the best at this particular camp not who i thought would be better players down the road. That is what the draft is for. I want ontario to be comprised of the best 96's with McDavid '95 in the momement and not picked on potential. THat is what some people don't seem to be getting. Draft looks at potential and u17 scouts look for where there at in the moment.

Thanks for the opportunity to voice my opinion.

List looks good. Some players may have been injured last season limiting time on the ice. Some players played on a line which enabled them to look better than they actually were. Whether a kid is drafted in the 9th round, 14th round or not drafted doesnt matter. Best of luck to all including the kids drafted late. I am sure that with politics in hockey, the only players on the team will be the ohl players--for the most part. It was a great few games of hockey.

Nothing is guaranteed outside of minor hockey ... Money and friends will never get u a spot in the O or U17. Even the team owner's kids dont get a spot given to them. Being drafted gets you an opportunity and nothing more. These kids are young men now and are only a product or commodity. How these young men deal with pressure, adversity and change is what decides who sticks in the world of junior hockey at any level.

If a non drafted player or goalie is liked for the above reasons and performs well in the team setting they will get picked. If not they just have take the next opportunity that presents itself. A drafted player that shows any signs of entitlement will be dropped faster a ton of bricks.

Based on watching almost every U17 Cornwall game (except when Orange lost to White and the team was ripped by the U17 coach in the dressing room) I would say these players will be looked at seriously;

McDavid Fabbri Perlini
Ho-Sang Dal Colle Hiddink
McCann Cornel Lindo
Abou-Assaly Bennett Watson

O MacDonald Bourne Murphy MacIntyre

McKeown DeSousa
Middleton DiPerna
Locke Spinozzi

Dermott Cummins Peters

Not every player is a superstar and time in the O will tell but tired of seeing someone post their list 15 times with the same names.

Adding to the above list; Rancine, Renaud, Salituro, Addison (Petti who wasn't there)
Duschene, Garcia

Hackett, Taylor, Mancino were consistently good

Should be close to a top 40.

Murphy would fit into the checking role really well , great team player/leader and would have no probllem or attitude accepting this role. Agreed though that he would have to play in the "O" this year to get any kind of consideration and I don't really see that happening.

10:39. From what I heard from people who were there, your list will probably be close to right-on. Virtually all the boys are 1st + 2nd rounders.
Don't forget another thing, this is a cash grab for the OHL. You need the 50-60 extras to build the pot. Remember they start with over 300 whose moms + dads pay several hundred $$$ to attend the first camps. 9th rounders have to make and play on their OHL teams before they have any chance of playing on this team.

Who was the last boy to do this?

Doesn't want it enough and is scared to go to the dirty areas to score, or to pay the price to get bigger, stronger, faster.

BM struggled with the physical aspect. Not visible at all. He will struggle to earn a spot. Definitely does not like the corners.

Yeah, neither will make their o team this year. They are good players but not meant to take the physicality of the ohl.
They would both be better off playing midget this year and try to get stronger.
I am very interested in the Mancini(sp?) goalie. Played very well on the strong white team in Cornwall. Who did he get drafted to?

Agreed. All these hockey experts. You should all take jobs as scouts, you seem to know more than them. Make me laugh.

How would their OHL clubs know they are on here?

I KNOW there are scouts on here based on what they write and knowledge they have.

There are No scouts on here picking on these two kids period. This is a so called coward that gets off bullying two young boys because of his own child's failures and disappointments. It's time to stop and focus on your son!! He pparently needs your attention more than these kids that your trashing. Time to act like a adult and a dad! Your kid would certainly be disgusted in your behavior!

Maybe all of them should come on here then they could see how bad the OHL is getting with what they pick. Yes my son was drafted but alot of the drafts were a waste of time.

You're nuts. Like every team your kid has ever player for, the top 6 forwards and top 4 D are no brainers and then everyone will bitch about the rest.

My point. Why must we bitch about the rest? Can we not just accept the team that was picked? No team is perfect. We know who the stars are and the rest know they are not the stars, so why must we make it publicly known that they are not? Just as well, why must the rest constantly be berating the stars also? Jealousy maybe? Can we not just all get along and enjoy the season as it comes? Wouldn't the season be much more pleasant if we just let the coach do his job without bitching and complaining? Who am I kidding, hockey parents are not that nice now, are they?

Correction, minor sports parents are not very nice. It happens in every activity where children are competitive, spills over into ignorant parents.

4:25, good points. it's an education for parents too.

just wait for the whining and hatchets come out when Herbst is named to the team. and some folks' "waste of time draft picks" will make the O too. shaaazam.

There will be some boys on this team whether they are playing well or not, just because they were 1st rd picks. OHL central scouting can't be made to look bad.

David Perklin was a high 1st rounder by Ottawa who was awful, and eventually traded. He never made the U17 team.

If it was really that important for you to know who were the best two you should have gone to Cornwall and looked for yourself.

The camp is now over, move on and crack open a beer and enjoy the freaking summer!
