Timing

Just about to do some work on the capri, cause rain stopted play last weekend.

Anway while i was draining the oil i thought on to check the timing !

Took the dizzy cap off to mark #1 on the dizzy, turn'd the engine over by the crank looking at the cam sprocket to line up with the dot on the head, look's down at the crank & the TDC mark is about 3 - 4 mm past the marker, The rotor arm is still in line with the #1 mark.

How is my car still running ?

Thanks Steve

I'm guessing here, but isn't that just cos of the timing being a few degrees from TDC?

Thanks JC for the reply,

I think i've just panic'd a bit thinking the timing was way off,

Is there a mark / pointer to correspond with the crank pulley
on mine theres like a thick piece of metal, say at 11 o'clock.

If i line the crank at 12o tdc the rotor is bang on at #1 but the cam mark looks like it one tooth out to line up with the mark on the head.

Mines a 1.6 running on unleaded with aditive btw.

I've not done one for over 12 years ! the last capri i had it had the belt done before i got it & it run great !,

Thanks Steve..

Hmmm not sure really, I've only done mine once before, and in the process of re-doing it, so prob not the best person to reply! On mine though there is a marker to line the crank up with, and yes it's about 11 o'clock, I guess it's the same with the 1.6 but beyond that I'm a bit lost too!

Its a static timing mark

used as a guide just to fire the engine up after an repairs, its enough to get it running but you still need to time the ignition up with a strobe or set it by experience.

there are lots of variables with timing and its impossible to say where the mark would be on any specific engine with the timing set at what it should be for the spec, (which is variable as to what spec it is, cam, carbs etc etc)

beg, steal or borrow a strobe if you want to know fpr sure.

Cheers Glyn,

I'll have another look at what i've set it at,

Funny thing a bloke across the road from me came over while i had my head under the bonet,
He's got a battery charger, compression tester & a strobe light ! all for a £10

So that will get sorted tomorrow !

Steve.
