Here is a neat complete set of 100 western themed stamps issued by Assoc. Oil Co. in 1939 (this is series 2 and stamps are numbered 101-200). The stamps depict various themes popular up and down the west coast. Topics include: transportationGolden Gate Exposition, historic trails of the west, early west, western wild life, birds, flowers, trees, natures oddities, man's conquest of nature, Hawaii and the Philippines. The stamps are all EX-NM and still have their gummed backs (most have hinge marks). Series 2 stamps appear to be slightly harder to find than series 1 stamps. Also included is an empty album used to the mount the stamps. The album has some writing inside and there are some hinge marks where stamps used to be. According to the instructions inside the majority of the stamps were available only at certain stations. You were encourged to drive up and down the coast visiting gas stations to try and complete your set (burning and buying many gallons of gasoline in the process). What a marketing idea! The fact anyone was able to complete these sets still amazes me! The artwork is really neat and finely detailed.
