Taipei, Aug. 10 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense (MND) will display its latest weaponry at a defense technology exhibition that will open in Taipei Thursday, said Lo Shao-ho, a MND spokesman.
A total of 161 items either developed or newly procured will be showcased to help the public better understand the current trends in national defense and the government's effort in promoting military modernization, said Lo in a press conference joined by international media.
Hsiung-feng III (HF-3), or Brave Wind III, an anti-ship missile, is one of the many displayed items attempting to draw attention. HF-3 is wholly developed by the Chung-shan Institute of Science and Technology, an agency under MND.
"The supersonic missile can easily sink enemy vessels and stop warships from invading," said Chiang Wu-ying, HF-3 project's vice convener. Chiang, however, said that speed of the missile cannot be revealed because it is a military secret.
Chiang highlighted the missile's economic value and said the upscale invention should attract buyers from home and abroad.
MND is among 90-some participants, mostly military technology companies, in the four-day 2011 Taipei Aerospace and Defense Technology Exhibition (TADTE), according to Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), the organizer.
The National Defense Pavilion, the largest pavilion, includes six major displays, including Weapons, Simulation Systems, R&D Achievements, the Military & Civilian Commonly Used Technology, Manufacturing and Repair of Military Products, and Recruitment.
The biennial exhibition, free to the public, will run from Aug. 11 to 14 at Taipei World Trade Center. (Nancy Liu) enditem/ly
