I think this is probably on the wrong board and may be moved but as you are a student you deserve an answer.
I have worried about the result of mining in our area for a long time and am glad you asked me.Mining development actually brings nothing positive to any peoples.Maybe with a lot of education before mining begins the results would be different but as I see it the mining development that has invaded the lives of the Watut and Biangai people's is destroying them. This should never happen as they now have jobs, some of them have cars and some of them are now living in Lae.Hopefully their children are getting a better education from the better schools and better trained teachers that are found in larger centres. If this is happening it is the only positive thing I can see as the once peaceful Biangai and Watut peope are now drunkards and many of the leaders have already passed from the dastardly dreaded HIV although it is rarely admitted and I will be castigated for saying this.
MOst of their surviving leaders,if not all, are now living in Lae and there are few benefits to our community as MMJV have moved all their offices and activities to Lae so the benefits are enjoyed by the communities in Lae and not in the landowners home area.Landowners employed at the mine site are driven in and out of Lae instead of being brought back to Wau meaning that some of them do not come home to their families on field break. The break down in family life will be felt increasingly over the coming years.
Even the landowning company is based in Lae and all recruiting is done from there sidelining our own residents for employment.
Our town and also Bulolo was built upon the mining companies- originally NGG and BGD- and now that the company has moved most personnel to Lae,living out at 9 Mile, our town has really suffered. If they lived in Wau,a remarkably lovely but shabby and neglected town,we could have a bigger population which would mean we would have better schools, better health care, a library, better shops etc etc.We may even get public servants who would actually work.Definitely we would get a water supply(we don't have one in our town) and probably EMTV too and a Town Manager would be a help as we share a council with Bulolo and everything happens there. Maybe someone would notice we don't get bitumen roads or even a grader now and then and then maybe our landowners might come home and visit their families more often.
As far as I can see MMJV has destroyed our town by its neglect of it as Lae offers a nice place for their expat bosses to live with clubs and hotels where they can go for recreation. We used to have those things in Wau too.
I think that people should be educated better and understand how money can change their lives and improve their standards of living rather than how money can just allow them to drink more beer.Mining benefits to landowners begins and ends with them being able to drink more beer.
