Valley View in Lae is also a locked down situation and people are not allowed visitors and kids can't make noise etc.Of course the expats fly-in,fly-out.Most of them don't even operate a bank account in PNG and don't have to put their hands in their pockets from one day to the next. The detrimental factor in all this(for them personally) is that they completely miss out on knowing how nice PNG people actually are and as they don't read our newspapers they miss out on the funny side of life. They leave PNG after seeing no more of it than Nadzab airport and the road up to Hidden valley mine.None of them ever get to Wau and wouldn't want to go anyway.
Banks in Wau? That is a long story-to begin with, under the rules of the ICCC,no services are supposed to be removed because they are uneconomical.Meaning that larger centres are supposed to subsidise smaller uneconomical ones. The same applies to Post Offices and we no longer have one of those in wau either due to it being uneconomical.
The real reason we don't have any banks in Wau,or a major contributing factor was that once upon a time banks were the only ones who were allowed to buy gold. This meant that people got a fair price for their gold and you had to actually be a registered miner to sell.Nobody could really steal from their employers as there was nowhere to sell if you were not a miner.Of course there were ways around this,I am not stupid but it was not the blatant thievery you have on the goldfields now.Anyway,to cut a long story short, along came a pollie who decided he wanted to buy gold(Iambakey Okuk it was) and overnight the laws changed and as the banks were not buying gold any more, the banks were no longer profitable in small areas and people were rippeds off left, right and centre by every man and dog who was buying gold and workers were stealing from their bosses as gold was and is still being purchased from every back door and hole in the wall establishment from Milne Bay to West sepik.
