Former prime minister Sir Michael Somare is leading in the East Sepik provincial seat he has held for 44 years with 7117 votes, with just eight per cent of the vote counted.

Pangu Pati's Allan Bird is trailing Sir Michael at 6107 votes.

The former prime minister has vowed to see Mr O'Neill jailed if he returns to the top job after he was dumped from office in a controversial change of government last August.

Counting in the National Capital District resumed on Sunday after a pay dispute with electoral officers held up the process.

Mr Trawen said he had no comment on reports that ballot papers had been set alight in the capital, suspending the count.
