Bring back the beef

January 19 2012, 11:15 AM

the educated elites of Goroko, EHP, PNG and our International friends have dearly missed Bire, his charisma and style of leadership over the last 5 yrs in the local and national political arena. the rural majority in the district are probably still at the crossroads trying to decide whilst some have crossed over, decisions made for themselves, their family, clan, and tribe for their intending candidates. We very much want to see him back at the helm but will the rural majority make our dream a reality? With lessons learnt I bet he should seriously step up in order to make a come back.

Bire Kimisopa will give the current MP a good run for his money. BK is seemingly the top most contender for the GKA open seat apart from the successful local business man Moses Venapo who has been very popular with his business venture with small business holders. Venapo had built a pretty strong base overtime and is set to roll in the next few months.

Long time gka resident Joe "Bullet" Bulhage is also making headlines in the press and creating waves around the urbans settlements. Hopefully he can pull some strings in the villages around Gka town like segu, asaroyufa, kama, nagamiufa, faniufa, etc. Looking back into the political history of gka Bulhage must come up with the best strategy to rewrite the history.

Longest serving MP Mathias Izape finished strongly at top five in the last race. He is tipped to be a top contender alongside Kimisopa, Harpokaqveh, and Venapo.
Elijah Gomae cannot be ruled out as he went neck –to-neck with Harokaqveh in their kama area and scored more first votes than all kama contestants. If contesting again he should fair well with majority backing.

Other young guns whose names popped up but have yet to confirm their respective positions as well as all other intending candidates for that matter are considered top contenders in their own rights.

For interests sake the top 8 finishers in 2007 gka open were harokaqveh, kimisopa, izape, , venapo, siwosawo, , gomae, smith and sagere.

Vito good points,, on the same note please allow mi to make some comments also based on privious history etc.

1. I personnaly believe that former members dont have a change of comming back.. look at the history so far..
2. Candidate that is favorite in this blocks dont win... example.. last elections every one that bire will win but some one from outside that we never heard of won...
3. Lets be realistic,,, forget joe Bulage... he contested Sinasina Yongomul... the only reasoon he is contecting goroka is because J.Nape does not want him be challage him. J.Nape tromoi boon go lo gka na tokim ol liklik mangi ol sem joe lo go long where na bai mi kaikai meat lo sinasina..
4.Some one new will wing gka open.

Re: Just my thoughts

Thanks Kamex & Vito for your opinions which are very much needed to keep discussion flowing in this forum.

Looking at the current developments in Goroka politics we are somewhat missing a leader of Kimisiopa's calibre. It is evident amongst scapers that his leadership at the national front was dearly missed. His qualities were valued by many others nationally when Thompson occupied his seat. The sad thing was that his own people rejected him without realising it through the LPV voting system. With greater insight and basic understanding of the LPV system it would be totally a different story this time.

I still think the trend stated in Kamex posting could be true as former MPs and or candidates becomes tasteless overtime with their policies. Having said that, the chances of new emerging aspiring politicians of occupying the MPs seat is greater.

my opinion

February 8 2012, 3:53 PM

Here is my opinion on who will be the key runners at Gka Open.
Note i said key players,, i am not predicting who will win.
I will give the names and why i thing they will be in the top five.

1. Thompsion H.
He is the incumbent with K17million to play with from department of finance. Althought he does not have support at Kama village, he will still be strong. He did not pool well in kama last elections but he won.

2. Bire K.
Like always Mathias Ijape will disturb him. He does collect vote well in his area and town. However, he will not do so well this year has most of his strong support have left him and he will not receive as much votes in the town and settlement area.

3. Moses Venapo
He is a good business man but not a good politician. For him to win he needs the full support of Kabiufa 1 2, notofana etc. However, he does not have that. He will collect from all areas within gka due to his PMV Bus stretegy. For him to win he needs to do extra on what he is doing.

4. Aie T
He will be the dark horse in this year elections. He has not shown his face in the gka that much but people are mentioning his name. Strong support within town area, settlements, zaukave (mountain people). Will collect small numbers from all areas within gka.
However, his shp connection will affected some of the papa grounds.

5. Tom Kafuku
Also know as "press master" will be in the race. He may be a coffee buyer but he sure knows how to look after people. Hence people want to eat and which ever hand that feeds the mouse controls the tummy. Weakness, he is not good public speaker and non-educated, simply coffee buyer.

6. Mathis Ijape
After 15 years of trying this will make it 20 years. Dought he will come back. Maybe a compromise with Bire will have an impact and then they can decide how will win. The age group that support him are all old and the younger generations do not know him.

7.Joshua Soso
community leader and an streight shooter. Anohter candidate from Kama, he will have good backing from kama area and dought he will last for eliminations round. If he has the cash to flow, he will definatly be in the race.

8. Jeffery Sasuo - current gahuku president
He may not be the idle chose for as a MP to represent gka but he does have support in his own small way. He is using his current position to manupulate locals and contributing to all kinds of haus cry etc.
May have the full support of all the drug bodies in kakaru market.

This is just my opinion. I mean no offense to any of the above candidate or intending candidates.

GKA Open seat - Very Important seat in the Years to come

February 9 2012, 10:48 AM

My fellow country men & women, we all must be aware that GKA Open seat is an important seat in the next coming years and we ought to elect a charesmatic leader for that seat. Mark my word that if we do not than we will be sorry and screwed up. With the huge turn overs in LNG Impacted area, Landowners and other upper highlands brothers have flocked to GKA and started purchasing propaties, Land ( from village to town ) , marrying local girls and engaging in 3/4 of business activies in GKA starting from Haus Kaikai to Hire Cars to name a few. Theres no plenty GKA involve in Such activites. If we are not careful in sending a charesmatic leader to stand up, them all of GKA will be bought off because yumi save skinguria lo moni.

All candidates mention above including former MPs are not suited for the GKA open seat because they all are always hideing around, maus pas and only come around during time of election and have vast self interest.

In my opinion, the only person who has the charisma to stand up ( one man ) against the influx is Michael Gotaha. Thats the person GKA needs. He is the person who thinks for the pride of GKA and doesnt like outsiders come taking over GKA. He has his works to show by garenting and supporting local people in their bankruptancy and financially assiting them to recover and not selling their properties to outsiders.

This is the person that will clean up GKA. We need him in the next five years to clean up GKA.

You lazy bum!

If we don't want to be bought out by all the outsiders and becomes observers on our own land, then let's stop waiting for God, some imaginary hoped for MP leader, or anyone else to bail us out of the troubles we've created for ourselves.

Its our bladi responsibility to get up and do something about it.

Thank you for your posting, it illustrates what's wrong with out country, that even the so called educated elites (who are neither) also sit on their arses, waiting like some kind of cargo cult for a charismatic leader to come along and solve all their problems.

Sorry, that's not the way the real world works!

February 9 2012, 12:11 PM

Thanks Kamex, for your opinion and information. I have also done a bit of research into votes collected in the Goroka open 2007 election for the first preference and found many interesting & varying results. I’m personally of the view that the trend may repeat or otherwise this information should give us an idea on what to expect heading towards 2012 elections.

The results from the 12 Rural Wards and 5 Urban Wards from the town area comprising of a total of 74 polling boots were assessed. The following were observed;

• most candidates scored the most first votes in their own strong hold area
• the candidates in the top five after the 1st preference counting at least scored in nearly all boots or wards.
• A candidate can easily predict how much 1st preferential votes he/she can get
• 2nd preferential votes are hardly predicted and is the most important vote in this LPV system.
• The amount of money spent by candidates did not have a strong influence on the votes he/she received
• Popularity seems a have a strong effect especially on 2nd preferential votes obtained
• Candidates lost votes through informal voting, papers placed in wrong (regional) boxes, returned ballot papers, and some spoiled thru human handling errors.
• From a total of 40 contenders, real competition were seen amongst 8 contenders
• The winner was declared after 2nd preferential counting
• Having more than 1 candidate contending in an area seem to fair well with the LPV system than was seen a problem in the 1st-past the post system

The above are only my general observations and are subject to verification and further discussion.

Can any Aiye supporter please enlighten me as to how this guy has been able to spend thousands during the campaign period (e.g. K30,000 at Meriaka). Where and how did Aiye make all this money? Wasn't he just a bank teller with BSP? Can anyone shed some light because he seems a dubious choice to me!

Certainly he didn't earn that money in any ethical way. Someone may have contributed it directly to him. But anyone who donates money expects something in return, and that's the danger of accepting campaign contributions if they are large sums.

I am from ifiufa and i know he did not spend that much.

to create their own polling station after 36 years OF NOT VOTING.
I guess u can say that cost will go on for generation.
The people of meriake will remember him for that.

Aiye did not establish any polling station

July 28 2012, 7:39 PM

Are you referring to the polling station at Meriaka Elementary School? If you are then Aiye didn't do s#*t! Bire Kimisopa facilitated the establishment of this polling station which finally got Alwin Jimmy's approval before the 2012 elections. Ask people like Daniel Horoso at Meriaka and they will verify this. This was also why Bire launched his campaign at Meriaka on the 24th of May. Obviously, you were not there or you wouldn't believe this lie about Aiye establishing this polling station with his own money. Other candidates from Ifiyufa were also there and can also verify this; Matthew Kapusili (GKA Open), Pastor Philip Timbie (Daulo Open)and Vegu Javono (EHP Regional).

Aiye's "own money"

July 28 2012, 7:55 PM

Hey Aiye fan (aka WTF)..you say that Aiye did all these things with his own money..how did he make his own money? Did he do this with his wages from BSP? If he did then they must be paying their bank tellers a s**t-load of money these days? I need to resign from my job and join the Green Bank for some of that Green Gold!

everyone has the right to stand for elections

I will be happy if anyone of the top 4 candidates win..
This site is a useless site, people easily can accuse anyone in this site.
please stop this accusations of Bire and Aiye.. Seems your all a jealous
to this two guys.
Bire is an established business person, and on the same token i know aiye
has small business in LNG site.

3kona, husat jealous? My original question was about how Aiye funded his campaign. If anyone is standing for public office he or she should expect public scrutiny - which is exactly why we're debating on network 54. So isi liklik and let's keep our debate focused on Highlands politics, candidates etc and not on slurring each other.

why do u care where or how candidates is getting funding from ??
why are u so interested in that?
what about the 51 candidates,,, why are u not interested in where they are getting
funds from...
your a jealous person,,, shame on you,,,
all candidates DO NOT need to provide their financial positions
before they stand for elections.
that is none of your business.....

Their financial position is not excempt from scrutiny

July 29 2012, 5:48 PM

The financial positions of candidates should be scrutinized in the same way we would scrutinize their character, their standing in the community or their policies. The means by which a candidate gets money to fund his or her election points to how they might handle the public purse. 3kona, can you not see that the lack of this type of scrutiny has led to the election of so many thieving politicians in the past?

Your certainly right. In any DEVELOPED & CIVILISED country of the world, a pollie's finances are scrutinised very closely and any potential conflict of interest must be divulged.

It's only in the Corrupt Country of Papua New Guinea that the pollies can keep all that secret.

That's why we're still a banana republic and likely to always be one.

Where did Aiye get his money from?

July 30 2012, 9:12 AM

If you don't know - this is politics and accordingly there are supporters who pool together money to support their candidates. I know that his supporters contributed and gave him at least K100,000 (plus).

You are trying to imply that he stole money to fund his campaign - if so then prove it. Otherwise you are just jealous that a young man can be able to do such things. Remember - we support him because of the leadership qualities that we see in him.
