| BEACH BOYS REVIVAL
TORONTO - Home sweet home! This looks like it could be a rough series for the visiting teams. Monday night Toronto evened the best of seven Semi Final at 1-1 with a convincing 11-5 win over Orangeville.
Opening period was all Beaches as they grabbed a 4-0 lead. They did it with uncharacteristic fast breaks, simply beating the Northmen down floor. Bobby McBride - Mr.July - was dangerous off the bench all evening. He scored a pair the opening 20 minutes. Another came when Wesley McDonald grabbed a turnover in his own end and went the length of the floor unchallenged because the visitors were too busy running to the bench for a line change. Makes one wonder how much more offence and excitement could be added to Jr.A if more defensive players were allowed past centre. Later J.D. Smithson and Ashton McLean created an odd man advantage and worked a neat 2 on 1 which demanded a good save from Josh Agar. Grudge match of the period was Jonathan Durno and Chad Culp. They paired off for two wrestling matches and earned double minors both times. The session concluded with a Jack Chisholm time out, followed by a carefully crafted and perfectly executed play finished my Matt Holman.
A very different Orangeville squad hit the floor in the second. Brady Campbell scored the opening possession. Later Peter Veltman followed with a deuce. The first by him was simply "Too Sweet!" Working alone he somehow slipped through two Beaches defenders, put an incredible fake on John McLellan then bulged the twine. It was the prettiest goal I've seen in a long time. Toronto shifted momentum with a Tom Montour power play marker. Up to that point they were very much back on their heels. After that goal they looked much like the team of the first period. The last 5 minutes of the frame was a goalfest. Scott Patterson - who played the second period - made a terrific arm save on Kyle Wailes. Still the home side went to their dressing room up 7-4.
Campbell struck again the opening minute of the third. That was to be Orangeville's last goal. They had an opportunity to rally but their power play was hopeless all night long. At 8-5 Jonathan Durno earned his fifth minor(a game misconduct) and a slashing major. On the 7 minute power play Orangeville managed five shots on goal but McLellan turned them all aside. Against the creaseman he made a sensational reaching back stick save. Chad Culp had been the most energetic Horned Head in the game. His fifth minor penalty - and game expulsion - really took the life out of the visitors offence. Another McBride goal to make it 9-5 finished them off. Lindsay Sanderson pulled his goalie numerous times over the last 8 minutes but the Northmen could not muster a single serious challenge on goal. Toronto won this one going away.
