Swedish security services intercept 80 percent of Russian internet traffic and share the gathered information with the United States, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has said in an interview with Britain’s New Internationalist magazine.

"The FRA [Forsvarets Radioanstalt], which is the big spy agency in Sweden, intercepts 80 per cent of Russian internet traffic and they sell it on to the national security agency in the US,” Assange told the magazine.

“There’s no longer a need to select who you intercept – you intercept everyone and you permanently record the whole thing, and then if sometime in the future you become interested in someone, you have the whole archive of all their communications and you understand who they are and who their friends are,” he said. “It’s a kind of coming totalitarian surveillance state.”

The 40-year-old Australian is currently being held under house arrest in Britain facing a possible extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted on sex crime charges.

Assange has denied the accusations against him and described the case as politically motivated.

They intercept alot of data, but there is no capability to process through and filter the most important of it. And even if you do find the most important info, good luck getting any actionable result from it.

I heard a great talk on the CIA by an expert in open source intelligence and ex Cia-agent in a 2600 talk. He said that the CIA spends alot of money to collect data that only gathers dust in archives or stays inert in some data center. I think that is an on the money assessment.

@Nikephoros

I think what you are saying boils down to the over-reliance upon SIGINT (signals intelligencegathering ) over HUMINT (human intelligence gathering) in the modern world of intelligence gathering.

As well one needs to understand the difference between data and information. Anything that is collected but never reviewed or acted upon is data, not information and data is worthless (actually it represents a cost if you are an accounting type) if it is never viewed or acted upon.

SIGINT is very efficient at collecting data, mountains of it! It falls apart though in the analysis part of the process, since there is too much data to analyze (as you say) by hand analysis is generally done with machines/programs. Most of the time the "matches" that machines give you are "false positives", things that look like what you are looking for but in reality are just snippets taken out of context.

HUMINT is very good at providing useful data, but it is very expensive and is open to all manner of compromises.

Ultimately I feel you really need a balance of both.
