| The Hellenes were scavengers, taking their favourite elements from the Semitic and Phoenician languages and synthesizing their own. Around the 9th century B.C. the Hellenes added five vowels to what were essentially the Phoenician consonants and these are the five vowels that English speakers can recognize.
The Hellenes took the vowels from Hebrew. The first letters of the Hebrew alphabet are aleph, beth, gemel, dalth. The first five letters of the Hellenic alphabet are alpha, beta, gamma, delta. Obviously taken from Hebrew also.
The Hellenes adapted the Phoenician alphabet to their needs. They took 16 characters from the Phoenicians all consonants.
The Hellenic vowels were Hebrew in origin and the consonants Phoenician.
