I've been to Skopje. I know how they speak there. Foreign people, foreign country, foreign language. Strange place.
Katharevousa, a mixture ancient and Byzantine-Greek (or Alexandrian Koine) was pushed on the people by Greek academics who refused to admit that Greek had evolved. Finally, the modern Greek of the people (Demotika) triumphed and today it is the official version of Greek used and taught in Greece, though Katharevousa is still used by the Church and a few other places.
The two fathers of the so-called literary Macedonian language after Word War Two were Horace Lunt (an American!) and Blaze Koneski (educated in Sofia in Belgrade!). Some even claim that Koneski was really an ethnic Serb named Konevich.
Why did the language of the people triumph in Greece, but the language of communist bureaucrats triumphed in Yugoslavia? Why are the people being suppressed and oppressed?
By the way, I was born and raised in Canada, and had little interest in the Macedonian Question until I was well past my twenties. Nobody ever tried to assimilate me, unlike the 1960's, when UDBA agents (Yugoslav communist secret police) flooded into Australia, Canada and the U.S. from Belgrade and Skopje in order to entice people to leave Bulgarian churches (as well as Greek and Serbian churches) and attend the new Slavo-Macedonian church. On this, they were successful, especially with those attending Bulgarian churches. They also tried to take over the U.S. based and very pro-Bulgarian Macedonian Patriotic Organization (M.P.O.), but failed.

The ancient Hellenic heritage has been stretched to such extremes, it has become a subject of ridicule around the World. A free society cannot continue under the shadows of ancient glory and myth, the chains of Hellenism have compromised the sense of freedom and reality. The concept of self-criticism is a remote idea from the national Greek psyche.
