| Child sponsorship letter from the SOS Children's Village Skopje, Macedonia
21/11/2008
Update from Summer 2008 for child sponsors
Half a year passed and it is a great pleasure to reach you through this letter and share with you the lately happenings in the SOS Childrens Village Skopje. It gives us as well another oportunity to forward our gratitude.
Your support made possible the growth and development of our 12 families in SOS Childrens Village Skopje. At present the village is a home to 80 children giving them the possibility to grow up into responsible citizens in our society.
We are proud of our children and their successes. Ljupcos greatest achievement this year was the performance at the music festival Colourful notes. He performed the song Dancing in the disco in the Universal hall, (the largest hall in our country) with two girls, peers from his school and a dance group. He had no stage fright at all and sang and danced very freely. We were all very excited and we sang with him- proudly says his SOS mother.
It was an exciting experience for the SOS audience, all the children sang from the audience and some hidden tears of happiness could be seen. He received a huge applause and invitations for performances.
Nowadays he is quite busy, as he has entered the finale of the competition for the Children Eurovision contest and he is among the 14 performers. We all keep our fingers crossed for him.
Our children are proud of their SOS mothers. The SOS mothers in SOS Childrens Village Skopje have recently started to learn English. The lessons are held in the multipurpose hall or when it is warm and sunny outdoors. It is a new experience for them. The children are really supportive and are ready to help their mothers with the homework. It is quite interesting to see the children teaching their SOS mothers the correct pronunciation of English words. These days the mothers are studying really hard preparing for their first test.
Events through the year at Skopje
A programme called Good mission visited the family of SOS mother Natasha to present the familys everyday life in the village and the programme was dedicated to motherhood and Mothers Day. The programme presented the mission of being an SOS mother.
A lot of love, hugs, laughter can be felt at the SOS Childrens Village Skopje. It is a great mission to be a mother. You become a mother deep in the heart not just by giving birth to a child. She is a mother, SOS mother of 7 children to whom she generously gives all her love and care of a mother. As SOS mother Natasha says: It is a pleasure and privilege to know that you are a caring parent to 7 children, but most of all it is important that you have a mission, to teach them to become self-reliant persons that will successfully find their own life path.
Starting from September 2008, the SOS Youth Facility will be a home to 8 youngsters. In the SOS Youth facility each of the youngsters has a main care person, a person to whom they can rely and who guides their development in cooperation with the SOS mother. All-day assistance and support is provided to the youngsters regarding health, diet, studying, developmental problems, appropriate growth and development and every day concerns. The youngsters adapted well to the life in the SOS Youth facility.
They are quite busy as they have summer jobs in a supermarket, in a pastry shop and they are doing quite well.
During the summer Daniel, our youngster, works in the near by supermarket and getting up early while on summer break its not difficult to him at all.
Daniel is hard-working and continues with the sale of make up, cosmetics and presents the products. He is a representative of one make up company and one cosmetics company. He likes to perfect himself and regularly attends the sales and training seminars organized by the companies. "Id like to have a job that offers travelling around the world. I love travelling and meeting new people. Thats what good life means to me" says Daniel.
Children and families supported in Macedonia
We have reached the community through the SOS Family strengthening programme as another pillar of our organisation. Our aim is helping families to stay together and develop the capacity to effectively protect and care for their children. We have supported 96 children, 47 care givers and 32 families.
The families have received health, educational, psycho social support, counselling on family development planning, workshops on child rights and parenting and parental skills.
Gabi, 12 years old girl raised by a single mother, had never had the possibility to go on holiday or excursion out of the city. Being a hard working pupil and good at informatics we managed to receive a donation and she had the possibility to attend a summer camp about programming and making robots in Pelister, a mountaineering resort in our country. Gabi was overwhelmed, it meant so much to her going to a summer camp for the first time and being with her peers from all over the country. She made friends and had fun making robots and going camping. The model of the robot Gabi made was chosen among the best and the instructor praised her in front of her group. She was even on TV to present her speaking robot.
These are only part of the numerous activities, happenings and experiences lived in this SOS facility, but the most important ones are the love, understanding and encouragement our SOS children receive every day within their loving SOS family and community. Thank you so much for helping us to make it possible.
Wishing you all the best,
Ms Jasmina Trajkovska-Lazarevska
