Today's residents of Greece are not the descendants of the ancient Greeks.
As products of an extremely xenophobic school system, they now almost uniformly speak Greek. However, a large proportion of the Greek citizenry did not originally speak Greek as their mother tongue.
The ancient Macedonians and ancient Greeks were separate peoples.
The modern Greek claim -- that the ancient Macedonians were Greek -- is politically motivated and is not supported by historical evidence. The claim is designed to offer a sense of unity to the various ethnic groups constituting modern Greek society and coincides with the official state mythology.
The fact that the heritage, and the coinciding claim, are fabrications, or that they must be virulently promoted by the Greek government, does not appear to distract the typical Greek from the euphoria of their newly acquired ancient lineage.
