Are tangible QR codes really useful, or just a gimmick?

Some companies have been playing around with the QR code design and using it in some very strange places. There have been haircuts with QR codes embedded; women's bikinis with QR codes on the bottom, or top; QR codes on top of cakes and cookies, and other oddball uses. Are these kinds of QR codes anything more than gimmicks to attract attention, without really expecting anyone to actually scan them?
