The part about having to pass the shelf before being allowed to take Step 1 is true, however it was meant to be a positive thing. Most students at Ross would never have been admitted to most medical schools and therefore are unprepared to take such an exam. They squeeze by with the curve during the basic sciences.
By studying for the shelf, they are allowed an additional time period to prepare.
Secondly, you do not have to repeat the entire semester if you fail a class.....only simply take the failed class over.
