When I visited St. Maarteen in November, I stayed at the Holland house in Phillipsburg on the dutch side which was a pretty decent hotel. The room price was $80/night + $10 for a cab from the airport. Be sure to inform them that you are a student and may be that will provide an added advantage. The front side of the hotel is main street with stores and the back side faces the beach. I am not sure what the prices are for the hotels you checked on line. Hope this helps. Nevretheless, I tried.
