School Name: Saba
Location: Netherlands Antilles
Basic Science Tuition:
$4,950.00/semester
Clinical Science Tuition:
$5,450.00/semester
USA Clinical Rotations: Yes
Time required for MD: 40 months
I don't understand the NY deal, or other states for
that matter. I saw on the list provided by the school that there are rotations offered in NY. What is the
deal that Saba graduates can't do residencies in
NY? How do I find a list of what states you can/can not
do residencies? I may be confused, but I thought that
as a med student you were limited in what states you could do clinicals, but I thought you could do a residency in any state which accepted you.
Also, does anyone know about Nevada? Can Saba graduates do a residency in Nevada?
Thanks for the clarification.

New York: Without a site visit and approval, (1) students can do a maximum of 12 weeks of clinical rotations in NY, (2) students cannot do a residency in NY, (3) students CAN still be licensed in NY. SABA already has students licensed in New York. In January, SABA had a site visit by the state of NY and is awaiting their report, which is due in a few months.
If SABA is approved, students will be permitted to do all 72 weeks of rotations in NY and a residency.
California: Presently, students cannot do a residency or be licensed in CA without a site visit. Last month, the CA Board of Medicine approved SABA for a site visit sometime this year. If approved, students will be allowed to do rotations, residency and licensure.

I'm currently looking at residency in MI (2004 Match). While Saba currently has no 3rd year cores set up in the state, there are spots for 4th year electives, and we have several Saba grads in residencies (emergency medicine, IM, radiology), and a few licensed Drs as well. Also, if you happen to know anyone involved in setting up core rotations in Michigan, you can certainly look into arranging these yourself. The Saba office in Gardner can give you more detailed info on this.

I do not think that there are any laws precluding you from doing rotations in MI....in fact, there is a hospital system that I know of that has many AUC students and I personally know of some St. Georges students that have done rotations out in MI.
As for residency, there are plenty of Saba grads doing residency in MI....this is not a problem.

I wanted to make an inquiry regarding the library at Saba...
I understand students normally carry their laptops with them...
Does the library have a wireless internet connection available, or LAN (Local Area Network) connection to which students may hook up their laptops to access the web...
Thank you kindly...
Posted on Mar 17, 2003, 5:02 PM from IP address 200.50.77.240
There is no wireless network set up. They used to let students hook up to the LAN in the library, but not anymore, I'm not sure if that's due to hardware issues, or abuse of the limited bandwidth for downloading music and movies and stuff. So you can either dial up with your laptop from home, or use the library computers to get online. There are like 20 I think, and at peak times of the day, there can be a wait for them.

I would like to know if there is a GYM in the New campus? I really don't practice any other sports except work out at least 1/2hour everyday at the GYM. If there is none, is there any GYM exist on the Island?

I'm still over here in the US, and I'm yet to leave for Saba for the upcoming term. So, I can only comment after what I heard.
Yes, some lady who's also a restaurant owner does offer membership to those who are interested. I must also warn you about this: several students have complained to the administration as to how she has allegedly taken advantage of some fellow students.

Hi there. I'm a student currently on Saba so thought I'd let you know about the gym facilities on the island, as I'm one of many regular users. There is no gym at the school or associated with the school. I've heard a few rumors that they're considering it, but to the best of my knowledge, it's just rumors. If you've looked into the layout of the island at all, and I hope you have considering you're coming here, the gym is in Windwardside, which is a ways from the Bottom and the school and the dorm you'll be staying at, so sometimes it can be difficult to get to and from, especially at odd hours like late at night if that's when you like to work out, but during the day, shouldn't be too much of a problem to get up there to work out and then back down. As for the gym itself, it's nothing spectacular but it gets the job done. If you work out primarily with free weights, you'll be fine, there's a rack going from 5-100 of dumbells, barbells with plenty of weights to stack up, a flat bench, a decline bench, an incline bench, and a preacher curl seat. As for machines, there's a smith press, leg press, leg extension, leg curl, pec dec, lat pull, and row. Theres one of those stands where you hang and pull your legs up for abs, an ab roller, a couple ab benches, a back extension stand, a couple of bikes and a treadmill. Thinks that's pretty much everything. All that stuff is stuffed into a pretty small place, so if several people are there at the same time, things can get pretty crowded. This happens mostly from around 3-6 right after school. I went tonight at 7 and was there by myself for an hour and a half. A lot of the bars and weights have some rust on them due to the climate, and some people with sensitive noses have complained about fungus, so this isn't any Bally's, but if you're really into excercising and lifting like a lot of us down here, you can make due and stay in excellent shape. If you have any additional questions, about the gym or anything else, feel free to email me, PatrikLeonard@Yahoo.com, I even have a couple pics of the inside of the gym if you're really curious. See you in May

Can't wait to see how Saba students score in the Match this year! I know of one Saba grad here in Baltimore, currently in a prelim surgery year, who matched in a categorical surgery spot somewhere on the Eastern Seaboard (not sure where yet). I'll leave any other details out until the official result is known.
Good luck to all who match this year!!

Hello,
I will be attending the Summer semester in May and I was wondering if anyone else out there is too. If so, I would really like to get a chance to email or actually talk with you before school starts. If you reply to this I'd be happy to give you my email address. Thanks!

RE:
I will be attending Saba in May as well, and I am very very excited about it. I would like to communicate with some other prospects discussing some of the plans like what to do from now on i.e preparationwise. Does one buy the books now and start cramming so on and so forth?
How can one ever be ready financially? Does Terry alone suffice?
I look forward to hearing from my prospective colleagues.
Medically yours,

Hello guys,
I am also a new student starting in May. I still have to make all of my travel arrangements . I was wondering if people were still thinking about meeting up somewhere in the US and travel together. If so, then I would like some information about that. Also if you know of any good deals, please share those with us. My email address is margretthor@yahoo.com

You won't regret the decision you have made. I'm currently finishing up my 3rd year clinicals, and Saba has a good name out here in the clinical spots. The Saba students that I have rotated with have all proven themselves to be hard workers, which means a lot to the residents and attendings with whom we work day-in, day-out.
Enjoy your time on the island. It is truly a unique experience.

I think you may be referring to the St. Joseph's/St. Anthony's programs in Chicago. Saba students can do internal medicine, OB, and pediatrics rotations at St. Anthony's, as well as 4th year electives. St. Anthony's takes part in the St. Joseph's Internal Medicine (#140-16-11-122 on FREIDA) and OB/GYN (#220-16-11-091) residency programs. The pediatrics program is affiliated with either UIC or Cook County pediatrics residencies.

IM, OB and Peds are all Green Book at St. Anthony's. They offer quite a few 4th year electives as well (nephrology, cardiology, anesthesia, infectious disease, endocrinology, pulmonology, to name a few). They cater to a few schools outside the country (Saba, AUC, Ross, Spartan, St. Matthew's, and Polish schools, from the students I have met).

I am having hard time which loan is better to finance my education. The Financial Aid office can't tell me which one is better for me. I know Medachiver allow students to borrow more money, but I want to know which is better in term of Interest and allow students to differ during their residency. I would appreciate your opinion on this issue.

I was having a hard time too deciding which loan to use, but I am considering other private loans. You might want to check that out too. I know one from Citibank that gives loans to medical students with no fees, capitalizes interest while in school, and will defer your loan through residency. There are other private loans out there...do some research and check out your best option. Best of luck!

Well its official I went to not only to the Grand Rounds at George Washington but attended the OBGYN lectures on campus which had only about 30 students in a normal size class room. So obviously I stuck out like a sore thumb because only 5 of the 30 students knew me from the rotation here at Holy Cross but I was warmly welcomed by both the professors at GW and some of the staff at the Dept. of Education in Charge of OBGYN. I introduced myself, reminded them that I was in fact a visiting student so to give them another oppurtunity to wisk me on my way if they had second thoughts about me attending their lectures (which of course is the right thing to do as I am not a student there technically and you dont want to be assuming since Im not paying their tuition) but to my surprise they were more than gracious and have invited me to any and all didactic lectures pertaining to OBGYN throughout the entire rotation here at Holy Cross. Remember there are also lectures here at holy cross hospital but these are over and above what is offered at the hospital. I am certain that any student from Saba who does this rotation will be extended the same courtesy and trust me it is an honor because they are paying 40 grand a year in tuition so its nothing to balk at. After each lecture I personally thanked the professor again for allowing me to sit in on his lectures. We as foreign students do have something to offer because in sharing our experiences with the AMG's brings us all together because lets face once in practice we are all on the same team. Some of the teachers are of course amazing. The students are also very nice and as far as I can tell give us alot of credit because they know that we have to jump through many hoops and are pretty supportive. We are all in the same boat anyway. Again if OB is a possibility for someone out there this rotation is highly recommended. Good Luck to All. Scott Jones

$1500 You can't beat this deal. I am no longer at Saba and i must get rid of this car. I bought it for $2500 and its in perfect condition.
It's a one-seater pick-up, manual transmission. No car on the island gets better gas mileage, just $15 to fill every 2 weeks.
If you want a reliable car this is it, its not fancy but if your worried about the narow roads in Saba this car is the narrowest plus it is really fun to drive and you will never find a car like it in the US or Canada or anywhere else except maybe Japan.
To see what type of car it is search for "Daihatsu Midget II" on google or any other search engine.
Just send me an email to saslaz@hotmail.com or call me in Texas at (972) 239-5240.

I'm sure this has been posted before, but unfortunately this type of web site does not allow itself the organization necessary to find such information....hence I'm forced to ask a question you may all be tired of hearing.
Please respond in sincerity though, it will be much appreciated.
I am currently set up with Mac systems/software, and wonder whether I'd be a lone ranger amidst PC people when I come to the islands to learn. Would it be best to sell off my stuff and start from scratch with a flavor of Windows? Or...since I already have a laptop Mac, printer, zip drive, and the rest of the kitchen sink, including Microsoft's Office Suite (packaged with Word, Excel and Power Point) ....will I be OK with my current setup. Please advice --- thank you..
BTW - if I had to start over...I'm cool with software for PC. The only expense would be the PC itself...not sure if that would weigh heavily on advice someone may offer. Again, thanks.

If you have Powerpoint, you will be okay as long as you can copy a document from Powerpoint made on a Windows computer and use it on your computer. I am not a computer expert in any means. I think the main problem you might encounter would be that some students have programs that get "shared" amongst students. You may not be able to use those, which, many times, are useful. If you have the finances, buy a new laptop, get insurance (extended warranty), and have one less thing to worry about down there. Dude, you're getting a Dell! :)
Posted on Sep 30, 2002, 5:14 PM from IP address 64.154.127.253
Like Mike said, primarily what you need is the ability to save and view the professor's lectures which are created in Powerpoint on Windows machines, but should open fine on your MS office for Mac. Your problem however from what I can tell would be getting the files from the PC at the school, onto your laptop. You mentioned that you have a ZIP drive, which is great, that's how 99% of students get files from the PC's at the school onto their personal machines (a few of us use USB memory drives instead), however, the problem I forsee you running into is that I believe that your Zip disk will be formatted for a mac, whereas to be written to and read at the school, it will need to be formatted for a PC. I honestly don't know if there is a formatting difference for USB memory drives or not, but that might be a good option if you're wanting to avoid spending the dough on a whole new system. Other than that problem, don't expect to get any help from anyone if anything goes wrong with your Mac (I know I know, macs are great and wonderful, nothing ever goes wrong with them) but if it did, no one on the island knows anything about them to help you fix it. So the way I see it, what it boils down to is if you like your mac, don't want to buy a whole new system, and can find a way to get the files from the PC's at the school onto your mac, you'll be fine keeping it. Other computer recommendations are to bring however many print cartridges for your printer you think you might need b/c they're about $80+ US here, if they have the one for your printer that is. Also zip disks which if you plan on using, are 2-3 times as expensive as in the states. Same for printer paper, especially photo paper.

I was just wondering if any one could help me getting my laptop ready for what awaits me at the island. It's a new HP(hp pavilion xt412). I do not know much about computer.
All I've bought so far is a portable printer, a USB Floppy. I'm thinking about buying a digital camera as well. I do not even have Microsoft Word.
Please help

My husband attending MUA, if MUA and Saba are having the same computer structure, then you will need a zip drive and zip disk. Zip disk has 2 formats, 100MB and 200MB, check to see if Saba's computer can take 200MB or not. MUA's computer can't take 200MB disk, so only 100MB is applicable. Also, you should have MS Powerpoint, I think most lectures are in Powerpoint, you may also want MS Word too, because some lecture notes are in Word. Your laptop should have a big harddrive, like 30GB, and a CD Rom, the biochem class in MUA, all lectures notes are stored in a CD which was distributed to students at the beginning of the term.

I have been off-island for over a year but I took my Wallstreet, a printer, a zip drive and bought a scanner on the island and the only (computer) trouble I had in basic science was a bad hard drive. Zip discs, like floppies, can be formatted for either PC or MAC and MAC can read either anyway. You will have only one problem: some study software like NMB questions, Robbins question disc, Board review, etc. are Windoze only and for those and others that get passed around I would suggest a CD burner and virtual PC. There is still a lot of software that, as the saying goes, "needs a pentium or better" (MAC).
Posted on Mar 7, 2003, 6:38 PM from IP address 66.2.146.5
All you need is a zip drive and MS office. If you get Virtual PC you can run any PC program. I did all 5 semesters on the island with a MAC--no problem.
Posted on Oct 7, 2002, 11:27 PM from IP address 141.157.69.72
You really need a zip drive because all the lectures will be stored in really large files. The two drives that the computers at the labs have are floppy and zip. In order to store the files in a portable disk, you need zip drive and zip disks to dup those lectures.
Posted on Oct 10, 2002, 6:37 PM from IP address 64.229.198.148
I wanted to thank you for your reply. Now I understand the purpose for a Zip drive, to be able to download the info from the lectures i.e. powerpoint, verses using a CDRW or floppy drive. Thanks, Charley

If you haven't yet purchased a zip disk/drive, and have a USB port, you may be interested in purchasing a removeable Cruzer USB disk. I just picked one up (though I do have a Zip Drive/disks already). It's a great device and is very small. I've had it about a month now and so far, so good. You don't need to install any user software to get it to work. As soon as you plug it in, it mounts onto your desktop like any other removeable drive and you can simply copy files to it. Since I have a Mac, I thought this wasgreat way to share files more quickly with my PeeCee-using friends. The product is PC-compatible too. Here's a link to the company site.
http://www.sandisk.com/consumer/cruzer.asp
I picked mine up from my local discount tech. store (Best Buy)
The Cruzer uses tiny removeable media, the kind that are used in digital cameras or Palm Pilots. The parent company (San Disk) makes the cards and you can buy additional ones, but one comes with the unit already.
I know this sounds like a sales pitch, but just trying to share some insight into a cool techy product.
BTW- Sony makes a similar device, but I didn't want to pay more for the name, especially since it didn't have removeable/upgradeable cards (perhaps they make other models)...and,although the Sony had a 128 MB capacity, the Cruzer, with it's removeable card is also 128 MB, and... not only can I buy additional cards (which are cheaper for the smaller capacity versions), but I can use the cards in my Palm.

Glad to know another Mac user. I think I'll hold off on the Virtual PC....anything to keep from going to the dark side.
BTW- mind clueing me in on your system (hardware/software) setup?
