"SPANKED AT 19, SHE RAN AWAY"... was the headline that appeared on May 14, 1902, page three of the New York Telegram. Its a gem. I found it and two other 1900's articles about spanking last week.

Here's how the story reads.

FATHER OBJECTED TO MISS SINCLAIR'S ADMIRERS AND NEIGHBORS MADE DEMONSRATION

Port Jefferson, L.I., Wednesday.-Miss Clara Sinclair, daughter of William Sinclair, a farmer and storekeeper of Wading River, has run away from home. She is nineteen years old and pretty and was the belle of the village.

She did not obey her father's instructions to ignore the advances of the village youths and Mr. Sinclair punished her in the way children are chastised, placing her across his knees and spanking her with his hand or a thick wooden hairbrush. She resented these spankings, but the more she objected the more frequent they became. Her friends and neighbors sympathized with her and aided her determination to go to relatives in New Jersey.

She started Monday to board a train for Long Island City, but found her father had reached the station first. The girl ran into the woods and made a detour to reach the next station. She was close to it when a friend came up with the information that her father was on the platform. Then the girl got a conveyance and drove across country to Manor and got on a train there.

Last night the neighbors of Sinclair showed there resentment toward him by marching to his house in a body and throwing things at it. Eggs were numerous in the collection of articles and some of them went through the windows and left there mark inside. Sinclair tried to drive the crowd away, but the fusilade was to much for him and he sought refuge inside his store.

Thanks for the compliment.

Yes, these are fascinating vignettes of life in the early 1900's and frankly it was just dumb luck that I bumped into the first article last August and then found that I had hit a vein to be mined.

Though honestly, like real life prospecting it takes a bit of time and tenaciousness to find the occasional article, but the vein is there. Instead of panning in a cold river stream, finding these articles means spending hours viewing old microfilms...If only the library would keep the microfilm machines in good repair.

I still don't know if I'm at the end, in the middle or at the beginning of the vein, but it is clearly evident that the publishers/ editors of at least four mainstream newspapers in 1900 New York City thought that stories of proper women or child-women being spanked would interest there readers.

Just what the interest was is an intriguing question.

-Was it a shrewd cynical calculation on the part of publishers/editors in a very competitive industry to print a story that both men and women might find a bit amusing, even a bit sexually titilating, but still pass under the wire of Edwardian respectability...

-Were they linked in some way to the "suffragist movement" that was boiling at that time, a subtle, funny put down to them...

-or did they again in a funny, but consistent for the era use these spanking stories as a way to tap into and relieve/exploit 1900 anxieties.

Two of the articles are about runaway girls, a concern for many parents as society rapidly urbanizing and young women sought more independence and equallity. Two are "battle of the sexes" articles. Even in 1900 heavy physical "spouse abuse" was not condoned by the courts as many companion articles tell...but are the articles telling husbands and wives that maybe an over the knee childlike spanking if not severe is okay, especially if one is married to a cranky nagging wife just as it was in Shakespearian times.

Just A Little More To Consider about Cynthia

My post last night was late after coming from another version of the party Cynthia had attended. Because of me, no doubt,she was not there. My honest intent was to say I was sorry and immediately leave. I owed her that for my indiscretion. I was pleased she did not come. The room was full of blown up pictures of her from her new employer's site and catalog. The poor little thing would have been consumed in agony upon seeing such a gasping display of bad taste. Even exceeding my own cosmic error.

It is my view that what has occurred on your sites and groups, sir, is we have taken advantage of her young age and lack of seasoning and maturity. I said that Cynthia is not yet a woman and that is true. So in our eagerness to seize the moment with her so to speak, we find her vulnerability point which in my uneducated view seems to be attacking what she looks like or the fact that she is not as even tempered as we would like her to be. And Cynthia reacts to us in a fairly immature fashion.

I would like someone to see if she will come back. That's the bottom line for me. I will promise to be only supportive if she does. I am a married man with two nice daughters. I hope no person treats them as I treated Cynthia right here. I deserve all the spears and arrows you shall throw at me for that.

As to kinross, etc., I know you like Cynthia and hope you do not leave. I also know what she does for a living and her very web persona creates much of her difficulty for her. But I also believe a carefully worded note to her may turn the trick for us and perhaps get her to come back to spend whatever time she has to share. If you would like me to try to do it, I shall. But I do not believe I am the proper candidate for this role based on the errors I have made in her behalf thus far.

Yes,i liked this girl.I am Scottish.What you see is what you've got.That was what Cynthia was like.However,
i would pay money to meet Arild.Before i visited his site,i hadn't a clue how to post pictures.I think there were others who were jealous of the attention
Cynthia was getting,but that was nothing to do with Arild.I was flattered by the attention i was getting

Actually I Think Not

Perhaps so but it is my belief that censors have removed it in England. My sources tell me the curtain falls as he is about to spank her and we hear sounds but no spanking is visible. Perhaps this can be verified but I believe we will see no spanking in the version we will have here. Does anyone have much improved information over mine? I believe some of the verbal abuse has also been censored as has his rough handling of her during the play.

Viva Mexicana!!

Hi Cyn, It's Jin!
Okay, here's a challenge for our roving internationally accomplished & recognised mainstream spanking film critic. I'll throw in a cluster of scenes to look at so you can select the ones worthy of review. Remember, I'm @ a disadvantage working purely off stills and commentary down here. I'm so starved of decent spanking footage, I even revel in "Donavon's Reef"!! (Seriously!)
One group that seem to consistently prove eye-catching spankees in spanking stills are the fiery senioritas of Mexico. They're spankings usually seem to have flirtatious story around their 'come-uppance' and the passion of the spankees are not wasted well captured by intelligent camera positioning. They're great! Well, that's the stills but what about the actual action? Does the scene measure up to the freeze-frame?
In mind I'm thinking of American productions "The Fabulous Seniorita" & "Hot Pepper" & 2 films featuring Delores Del Rio, as well as at least 4 Mexican productions. The only one of these I have seen footage for was Delores receiving 7 enjoyable sharp slaps in "Flying Down to Rio".
So do they measure up? What makes the Mexican ladies such good spankees? Or are they?

"Rio" and "Fab. Seniorita" are Tops For Cuties

These are really great and top drawer cute . . one of the LA "oldie movie" stations used to use these two fanny tannings as a weekly intro to whatever oldie they had on tap for the evening . . probably three years ago . . then some biggie communications company bought the station and that all ended. (ended . . another pun)- - but these are very good and cute . .

"Rio" is tops because I don't think that Del Rio knew what she was in for . . I don't know whether they rehearsed the spanking or not before she got it in the end. These get a "cute" award from me . . if I were princess of movie plots .. these would be standard spanking #1 and #2 to plug in when a plot is dragging or where I had to cut out some talking head dialog . . so these are great . . too bad my generation has to go to scratchy black and whites to see this sort of stuff . . but that's why Cinema Swats is so great . . how is #6 coming, oh guru of the spanked starlet bottom????

Frontier Gal: The Spanking That Bonds!!

This was a spanking at the END of a movie that was an urgent part of the plot . . the little girl had been been spanked and this bonded her with her dad . . "daddies spank their daughters . . that means they love them". . at the end (end) of the movie, Cameron wants Yvonne back . . he has saved the kid's life . . Yvonne takes the kid and won't listen to him . . . it was a spanking of love . . (not like the dark spanking we discussed below).

I don't really think they would have gotten back together . . the kid saying to Cameron, "you spanked mommie" . . . Cameron says, "you are darn right I did" . . the kid says, .. "that means you love her" . . . and Yvonne smiles . . Cameron lets her up . . . happy ever after . . . .

Now . . the spanking was FAR too hard . . a few pats would have done the job . . but it was OK . . it was the kid's words at the end that closed the deal . . a few pats would have worked . . . but, what the heck.

This is the only really hard spanking that made for a stronger plot line . . it was not hooked on even if it was at the end . . and Yvonne is a world class spankee . . To my knowledge, based on her many messages on the groups, in this chat forum and through many personal
e-mail's, we are good friends.

What did I do to her ? Nothing else than taking her side in most cases and trying my very best to help her whenever she needed help.

She's more than welcome to return whenever she feel the time is right. If she needed a rest, I respect that, and I will not discuss any possible problems my members might undergo - openly.

A proper approach to creating a series of videos would be to talk privately to the people who would be in it, and arrive at an arrangement BEFORE going public. You got it backwards.

I believe you crossed the line of what is and is not acceptable.

Let Me Mention a Few if I May

Perhaps you did indeed provide support. I have traced her a bit here and on the groups and indeed find she was constantly in a state of struggle. Look at the very pages we are on here and you shall see this lady is working to make this site a more enjoyable experience for us. Perhaps I was in error and approached all of this in an improper fashion, but this young lady was constantly under fire here and in your Groups.

My only crime was that I indeed have seen her and believe the situation of her leaving was quite unnecessary. This is not the first time this lady has left all of us. I personally believe it will not be possible for us to find someone we idealize in our sexual fantasies about spanking who will also try as hard to please us as she did.

Now I am sure you can find some additional reason to retort my message here. No doubt the same men (and I am a man as well) who accused her of being "off topic" will find my comments wanting as well. But I live in California and this young lady is a shy and warm little person who is loaded with self doubt to say the least but who graced our humble table to try to make us all more joyful in our fantasies.

I am persisting in this from a minority position because I no doubt share spanking fantasies about things that are clearly out of my personal reach. This small person was within our reach through this site while not in person. Believe me Mr. Moderator any of us would be the envy of the spanking world if this little person would grace our real life. And now as quick as a wink she is gone and we are making excuses about the fact that we were her friend or that we tried to help her.

For some reason we have failed here and perhaps I played some role in this. But at least I did see her in person which is something none of you shall ever do and I personally believe we are now missing something. I don't know what needs to be done here and I am no psychologist but this is a very lonely little person who was seeking companionship here.

We have drawn pictures of her, joked with her, listened to her bawl us all out, and frankly made this little person a part of our lives on the Internet. Certainly someone with a bit of tenderness can find some way to bring this little person back and promise not to make her work so hard for acceptance only to find male rejection as her reward.

I without doubt have overstepped the boundaries or propriety and honestly am not close to her at all. Some of you are and she does answer your messages to this moment from what I hear from others.

helpful to me as well.However,Dan2Cute,you got it backwards,as Arild said,on the video issue.Having said that,i do agree with much of what you said.She did get hassle from the on-topic fanatics who tended not to do any posts themselves,either on-topic or off-topic.They
only posted complaints.I liked Cynthia's patter,even
when she was off-topic.I have been known to use different names to try to start a thread on the subject of spanking,sometimes a false name,sometimes my
real name,because things had gone so quiet and i was fed up seeing just my posts and the posts of a few more regulars.I can understand that younger visitors will not have been around when cinema spankings were more frequent.They have to rely on the occasional film
on T.V.,in this politically correct age.Therefore,it will be difficult for them to say anything.
Cynthia told me in an e-mail that she was thinking about leaving,as her new job was going to take up more of her time.However,like myself,she wanted to drift away gradually,without drama.For the remainder of my time here,i feel it will be rather boring.The cartoonists keep one group going,but things can be slow elsewhere.I shall be 60 in 2002,the fires of passion are not quite what they were.So,very soon i could be gone,like Cynthia.We needed her more than she will need us.

Earlier I mentioned I'd be interested in learning more about the dual spanking of pretty Spanish twins, Mili & Pili in separate scenes. (What was the film called?) I love the stills, especially the 2nd. one involving the OTK action. That's a big favourate. Cute but Not Much Else???

The twins are cute . . . the guys who spank them are cute . . the spankings are OK . . . . but they don't fit well in the chemistry of the movie . . I have seen the spanking on Cinema Swats many times . . . it is a dialog from a "B" movie . . the key scene is when one sister throws water in the face of one of the guys and is clumsily spanked while he sits on a rain barrel . . lots of kicking and hand swinging . . but the spanks are dubbed and not in tune with the gent's had contact with the bottom . . . . I honestly don't know if there is enough substance here to talk about . . unless Dan and I argued about the proper translation of the movie dialog . . and then I fear he would outdo me in spades . . . so, cute movie . . worth seeing on Cinema Swats . . . . anything else, Dan????

Do you think they are really twins or one gal playing two parts? Both are on screen at same time . . but they look too identical . . . don't know.

How about a more controversial flick . . . ? One with a plot of some sort . . . .

No spanking scene of interest. Christopher Atkins treatens to spank Brooke Shields on her bare bottom, but nothing happens.

Early in the movie, old Leo McKern give the little boy and the little girl (playing Atkins & Shields as children) a few light slaps, but it's not much of a spanking, and I have no interest in kid spanking.

though the camera focused on her face the whole time.
However,there was another bottom patting scene involving Elke in the film"The Oscar".This film was available from an Amazon market-place seller who,
unfortunately,would not ship to the U.K.,so i lost the chance of buying it.I wonder if it was the sudden death
of the leading man and bottom patter,Stephen Boyd,
which caused this film to,apparently,go to ground.

Always the winner . . year after year . . . done many times and you can put yourself into the scene . . great dialog and music . . . you would need to sing and get spanked . . . the best would be to be the Broadway Kate in the MGM movie version . . . without doubt the chemistry is right from start to finish . . .

Reasons? . . . not just a spanking dropped into a movie as a second thought . . . always part of the plot and the fun . . . and it doesn't come at the end like most do . . . it smarts throughout the entire flick . . . so, this is the champion . . it is the most talked about spanking scene in the movies and the very best . . hands down (and pants down?) winner . . .

Best costumes . . best dialog . . best spanking . . best characters . . best important part of the plot . . tell me any other spanking that is REALLY a part of the movie . . you can't because THIS is the ONLY one . . . and the only one that will EVER be . .

Well, there's McLintock, and PD#1...

Well, I enjoy "Kiss Me Kate" as much as anyone, but I submit that the entire movie "McLintock," made exactly ten years after KMK, is based on the premise that the shrewish wife is going to get publicly spanked. When it finally happens, it is cathartic, justifying all that has gone before.

And travel back in time a couple more decades, and we see "Public Deb No. 1" (1940), a film which would make absolutely no sense if the socialite played by Brenda Joyce did not receive a public spanking early in the picture. All the picture's rationale is based on that one scene.

There may be others, but these two came to mind immediately when you asked your rhetorical question.

Pub Deb #1 Spanking Starts a Romance; the McLintock Spanking Makes One Stronger!

Indeed, indeed . . . that is really true . . In Public Deb #1 the spanking changes a course of events . . a course correction no less (pun?) . . It serves to level the playing field .. gives the romance a chemistry . . very, very, good point indeed, indeed . . While the push/pull in the relationship continues after the spanking, he comes out on top (pun?) so to speak . . .

Now in McLintock . . (as with Public Deb #1) the spanking is part of the advertising for the movie . . we know it is coming before we see the flick . . but the attitude change probably begins when she sees him again . . natural momentum WITHOUT the spanking would have put them in each others arms again . . I think the core of the spanking was the fact that he came home years ago with lipstick on his collar and did not tell her the truth about it . . the spanking was unnecessary for the romance . . a punishment for a small offense.

Take the spanking out of KMK and you lose the fun of the movie . . take the spanking out of Public Deb and the two romantics don't share futures . . take the spanking out of McLintock and the romantic appeal between the protagonists remains . . . .

Now, let's go to the quality of the spankings . . KMK would have been much better OTK with the dress raised . . and it would have been sexier . . but it was an "8" at least . . the Deb spanking was probably a "9" and she was properly dressed for the spanking . . and the newspaper insert helped (like it did in Abbott and Costello in the Navy)- - it gave the spanking publicity and this changed the your lady's image . . . . . . In McLintock we have a bully beating a lovely and perfectly behaved Irish lass with a coal shovel . . . he was applying punishment . . she was providing the humor, sexual attractiveness, and the sounds of a beautiful woman being spanked . . (good sport that she was) . . but without the spanking in McLintock they would have gotten together and lived ever after . . . . . .

To digress . . the spanking of Powers by Patrick Wayne, the Fatter Wayne's Son, was a 'course correction' and put this couple together . . it used the coal shovel . . . but he was sorry and bashful after the event and she was in love . . . . remember the line . . "this is the first engagement that started with a spanking".

So, the bottom line (pun) is that you Dan are right but so am I.

Hey . . good spanking . . too many clothes . . great expression . . very negative . . but the plot line didn't need the spanking to make the flick tick so to speak. They patched it into the movie . . an afterthought at best . . . I'll bet the director did the scene as it is cut out many times and then said to the two actors . . . "let's spank her and see if it fits" . . . they plugged it in and left it in . . but the plot is not improved with the spanking . . it is not as powerful as the ones in KMK, Deb, and McL . . .

You're kidding, right?

You're saying that the plot line of "Love Crimes" didn't need the spanking? You've got to be kidding. The release version of "Love Crimes" was a disaster, both with the critics and at the box office. But if you watch the film critically, you'll see that the Sean Young character, an assistant D.A. named Dana Greenaway, was fighting demons in her own personal life at the time she was stalking the bad guy, played by Patrick Bergin.

When he abducts her and holds her captive, she remains the tough, intrepid prosecutor, out to nail this criminal. But when he thwarts her attempt to stab him, Bergin grabs her, puts her over his knee, and gives her what I would call a very realistic spanking, over the knee and by hand. There are exactly 23 swats, all of them visible on screen. Throughout the spanking, Greenaway is screaming, then, towards the end, she begins to cry. Real tears. And she murmurs, "I'm sorry."

Now, although the audience doesn't realize it yet, Dana Greenaway has regressed psychologically to being a submissive little girl. The man takes her and puts her in a soapy bath, then washes her naked body himself, with a father's tenderness. Now Dana has been completely submerged -- not only in the bath water, but her identity has been submerged into that of a meek, dependent little girl.

So what does the MPAA do? Those Nazis at the ratings board slaughtered the film by ordering the spanking scene stricken from the movie... to appease the PC police, no doubt. And in so doing, they robbed the audience of the film's most important catalyst. How to explain the sudden change in Dana's attitude? Certainly not by cutting out the one scene that makes it believeable!

It's even worse than that. If you've taken the trouble to examine the two separate versions of the film -- the R-rated version that made it into the theaters and onto cable TV, plus the "unrated" version available only at video stores -- you'll notice that in the bath sequence there is another critical omission: In the "approved" scene, Bergin's character is absent while Dana bathes, making it appear that she is taking her own bath, instead of being dominated by him as her temporary father figure.

Don't get me wrong, "Love Crimes" is not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination... but it could have been SO MUCH BETTER if the MPAA Nazis had let the director's original vision stand. Oh, how many more great scenes will get hacked to death by these fascists, before Hollywood finally awakes from its overlong PC nightmare?

How Do You REALLY Feel About My Post, Dan?

Hi Dan . .

It was love and caring that turned the trick. Some women respond to being hugged and cared for . . not beaten into submission . . this was not a fun spanking . . it was not necessary. He had won her over by taking charge of her and caring . . hugging, fondling, all the things that make a difference. Most women don't respond to being beaten . . I think the movie point was made by him holding her, touching her, bathing her, and loving her.

The days of curing people with mental disorders by dipping them in hot oil or putting their heads in vices is over . . care and attention is the solution in a contemporary social system like ours . . thumb screws and draining the frontal lobes don't work . . spanking for fun and sexual stimulation is the name of the spanking game . . not taking a sobbing, dirty, young woman and beating her 20 plus times on the most tender part of her body . . she needed love and not humiliation . .

I don't like the "movie monitors" either . . but this beating is probably why they did not like the spanking . . if it had been fun, enjoyable, smiling, and simulative in a positive way, it would probably not be corked off the flick . . I think this spanking may have been good outside the movie as a spanking . . but it was not good in the context of a woman with a psychological problem .. .

And Cynthia, how do you feel about that? Guess, Dan my good buddy . . . . .

Anyway, I didn't see a "beating." What I saw was a spanking... and I'm sorry it doesn't measure up to your ideals of what a proper spanking should look like. Under the circumstances, I think the man went pretty easy on her.

Girl? Wrong? Sputter! Sputter!

Now, that's a typical man thing . . as soon as you begin to get the sort end of an argument from a bright and beautiful woman, you get to creating the foundation for a spoiled tantrum.

This is a beautiful woman in trauma . . care and nurturing is the name of the game. Her "attempt" to cut him was and cry for help . . she tried to stab him so he could grab her wrist . . if she had really wanted to stab him, she would have thrust the knife at him from her sholder . . . she was crying help.

And, after he disarmed her, he became angry and began to punish her . . not necessary . . so the spanking was not required. The movie was bad so somebody said, "lets put in a spanking". And where will it go? "Why, let's put it in the only really dramatic scene in the flick" . . . . so, in the final analysis . . the correct and beautiful woman wins . . what possible value was this spanking in the movie? It was negative and not very nice????

Wrong again, Cynthia. The spanking came at precisely the right time in the narrative, and was necessary as a device to drive Dana into a submissive state, something she certainly did not display earlier in the film.

It works beautifully, in the unrated version of the film -- the "director's cut." It's very unfortunate that the ratings board opted to eviscerate the screenplay's integrity by scrapping the spanking scene. Our hats go off to Lizzie Borden, the director, who apparently persuaded Miramax to release the video in both versions. Because of that, in the unrated version we are able to see the correct sequence of events, and as flawed as it is, it still makes more sense than the release version does.

By the way, didn't they teach you in debating class that you've lost the argument the instant you get personal? Instead of putting forth fresh logic on your behalf, you pout: "Now that's a typical man thing...."

How clever!

Dan . . you are up late . . . . I never took debating class . . actually, never got past high school . . So when I begin to come out on the short end of an argument I either have a tantrum, come up close to a guy and give him those big teary blues, brat off in a huff, or as you said, pout . . I works pretty well for cheerleaders and homecoming queens. But I was trying in my discussion with you . . I was presenting a pretty together argument. My points were well argued, I have some knowledge of the topic, I was well organized, and did not blow it by crying . . And I look GREAT when I am crying . . . . the discussion of the substance of the topic just went on one post too many . . I was beyond my knowledge of the subject and as a result, lost.

I don't care what the director or producer had in mind . . this was a beautiful woman with a problem. This guy actually helped her get her shite together as Arild would say . . she would never have cut him anyway . . and her reward was to get spanked . . now, I ask you Dan, in what psychology book does it say that the prescription for a trauma is a spanking . . ???
