I won't call it the greatest of all cinematic spankings, nor even my personal favorite, but people should take a look at "The Roots of Heaven" from 1958. Some people call this one a cheat because it doesn't actually show contact, but the spankee's bottom was apparently bare, so they didn't have much choice back then.
A group of early eco-guerrillas invade a cocktail party in French Africa to deal with a famous lady elephant-hunter. While her husband (Herbert Lom) and other guests are held at gun-point, the oldest team member (Frederick Ledebur, as I recall) scoops up the severe-looking, forty-something target, deposits her across his knees, draws up her skirt -- the camera cuts away at the last second, though we get an appreciative reaction-shot from one of the male guests -- and begins to apply the palm of his hand. The team leader (Trevor Howard) counts off twelve smacks, and much of the footage is of the victim's face as she goes from demanding to pleading for it to stop. The sound, incidentally, is quite realistic, and at least one of the whacks sounds as if it's landing between the buttocks.
The scene is preceded by a sequence where Julliette Greco, one of the team, wanders over to the house where the party is taking place and watches the lady on the porch, surrounded by her admirers, with no idea what's about to happen.
The actress, incidentally, was not credited, which may tell us something.

I remember seeing this scene on a movie revue programme some 30 years ago, and only when looking up this web page did I find out what the film was called. I've never seen it since, but it was a great scene - more for what was left to the imagination than what was actually on view.
I think that is a problem with a lot of things these days. So explicit, you don't have to imagine anything. That's why I like main stream films. Their charm is in their inosence. The spanking is a side issue. Not a precurser to lurid sex (not that there is anything wrong with that), but an act of dominance. Putting someone in their place, or punishing them for some mis-demeaner.
One of my hero's was John Wayne. He had a way with women which is now (quite rightly, I suppose) regarded as being politically incorrect. "Roots of Heaven" would be a good movie to remake...however Hollywood would forget to include this scne...or have some homosexual male aactor play the spankee.
The John Huston-directed Roots of Heaven is definitely a movie worth checking out, if you can find it (the full movie is not available on VHS).

I had heard about this movie--and the scene indeed is quite powerful despite the fact that everything is shown except the actual contact you most want to see--and while I was waiting to see if it would
turn up on TV I decided to look for the novel.
The book is also hard to find. It's written by French novelist Romain Gary so though there are copies around most are . . . well, in French. English translations seem far fewer, but I eventually found one in a large library.
It's worth reading the scene in the book, too. As I recall, he takes about three pages to set the whole spanking scenario up and then actually mentions only about two sentences worth of specific details. Yet, despite the few words spent on the spanking itself, the atmosphere and setup was so well written that it was worthwhile reading. It also made seeing how the movie treated the same scene even more interesting.

I posted a question as to what is Cinema swats. Before anyone answered, I found them. Is there a series for males on the receiving end? I bought vols 1 and 4; they really are great! The early one does have a number of clips that run longer than really necessary, setting up the spanking - especially a problem with foreign language scenes! This is less apparent with the later volume.
