Will provide a wide range of nursing, clerical, and office automation duties and provide assistance to the clinical health staff at the NIAMS Community Health Center, Washington DC and report directly to the Nurse Practitioner. Work consists of personal nursing care, diagnostic and research support, therapeutic procedures, reinforcement of patient teaching, and documentation in patient¡¦s medical records. Other specific activities include:
„X Prepare and assist patients for examination, transfer, and discharge. Duties include obtaining and recording vital signs, setting up trays, obtaining supplies and equipment, patient transfers, and discharge.
„X Assist with specialized procedures and diagnostic examinations.
„X Prepares the patient and the environment for expected responses to therapies while maintaining the integrity of the protocol.
„X Review patient care policies and procedures utilizing NIH guidelines. Develops own procedures to facilitate processing of patient care matters.
„X Ensure safe handling of specimens in accordance with prescribed protocols.
„X Responsible for weekly projected census admissions list.
„X Requisition of medical and office supplies, equipment, material, etc.
Knowledge of skill gained by education or training or equivalent to perform the following duties:
1. Communicate in a bilingual environment. Verbal and written communications are essential to communicate effectively with primarily Spanish and/or English speaking patients, hospital staff, and physicians.
2. Observe and record vital signs
3. Assist nurse practitioner or physician with physical examinations and treatments.
4. Provide personal hygiene care to disabled patients.
5. Assist patients with exercise programs.
6. Observe/report reactions to medications, treatments, significant changes in patient¡¦s conditions.
7. Apply hot/cold compresses safely.
8. Provide general care of patients with minimal supervision.
9. Have a working knowledge of the duties of the Patient Service Representative in order to cover the work when he/she is out of the office.
10. Have knowledge and use of automated word processing equipment to prepare memoranda¡¦s, letters, reports, charts, tables, administrative forms.
11. Simple knowledge of diseases and illness, and skill sufficient to explain purpose and technique of procedures.
12. Knowledge of the organization, work, and research requirements and goals of the OCD and NIH and NIAMS policies.
13. Knowledge of environmental safety.
14. Knowledge pertaining to privacy of patient and the secure handling of medical records.
15. Knowledge of commonly used medical terminology to communicate effectively with staff, patients, and family members.
