Manmade Fiction

Response to I guess the average Protestant or Evangelical would not view me as one of them,

It seems your introduction to Catholicism and the Jehovah’s Witnesses have made you a Christian, i.e., a follower of Jesus Christ. I think a lot of explanation is needed for the differing beliefs and doctrines just for the many types of Christians alone, all followers of Jesus Christ. How can they all be right as they claim to be? Explanation for the contradictions and absurdities that can be found in the 66-book Bible is also needed for one who is discerning and curious.

In my mind, what is simple, much more plausible and requires no explanation is that religion was invented by our ancestors, intelligent primates like us. The Bible and other ‘holy’ books are manmade and are no more divinely inspired than any other work of fiction.

To paraphrase Hitchens, religion and the supernatural was mankind’s first (and worst) attempt at geology, meteorology, cosmology, biology, chemistry, etc. Science has since taught us and we need to outgrow this superstition that was the hallmark of our species during its infancy and childhood. The supernatural has now become the so-called ‘God of the gaps’ when something is yet to be discovered and explained, an ever receding pocket of ignorance.

It is unfortunate is that over the past centuries, religion was used by enterprising and power hungry humans to subdue, control and enslave their fellow humans. What is more unfortunate is that it is still happening in our time.
