Other authoring tools capable of adding SVCD subtitles than I-Author?

As I don't like I-Author at all (but have used it forever by now), I've been trying to find an alternative solution for adding real SVCD subtitles (=not anything permanent on the pic, but subtitle stream in SVCD). Unfortunately VCDImager can't do this -- at least not yet (someone has requested the feature from author anyway).

Does anyone know other tools than I-Author that can handle SVCD subtitles?

Nope, I-Author is the only program that can do SVCD
subtitles. Perhaps one day VCDImager will support it,
but I would guess that they would make menus a higher
priority than getting subtitles to work. VCD doesn't
support selectable subtitles but it and SVCD both
support menus, so my guess is that most of the
development effort will spend in getting menus to work
as that seems to be what people want the most.

Philips has the answer

September 14 2002, 10:18 PM

As everyone knows, Philips was the developer of the SVCD standard.
Since I-Author uses a different standard, SVCDs with switchable subtitles made with this program will NOT run on a Philips standalone DVD player.
I couldn't believe thet there was no solution from Philips to the subtitles problem and after many hours of research i found this site:
http://www.licensing.philips.com/ordering/soft/documents199.html
There, you can find a tool from Philips that claims to author SVCDs with switchable subtitles (up to 4 subtitles !!) that DO WORK on Philips players.
I haven't tried it because it runs only on NT4, wich i dont have installed(and i'm to lazy to install right now). Although i found a guy who made a "patched" .dll that is suposed to let the program run on XP, i couldn't get it running.
If anyone has luck (and good results) using it, please send me a mail to let me know how it works.

Stream SubText 2 <=> Philips SVCD Designer

October 10 2002, 1:08 AM

I think, Philips SVCD Designer & Toolset are very good tools to create his own SVCD, but for creating subtitles you must first get knowledge about making IMG-Subtitle files.

Try to use >Stream SubText 2< ( easy to find in www), to create your IMG-files on an easier way.

You can also use MaestroSBT to create the selecteble subtitles from .sub files and then mux these selectable subtitles with winsubmux to your Mpeg.
This is faster and easyer than I-author and just as good.

You are correct. Note that I participated in this thread (see the first reply), BUT it's a year old! I am always amazed at how people will dig old posts up from this forum and respond to it like it was posted yesterday. At the time I posted it SubMuxer was not available or at least I had never heard of it. I'm not blaming you for responding as this old thread has a lot of recent traffic, but yes, it certainly is possible to do subtitles without using I-Author but that was not always the case. If anyone wants to try SubMuxer, which is what DVD2SVCD uses, go to http://www.doom9.net.

Lots of software to do subs

Check with vcdhelp.com (the how to do...) or even better Doom9.org.
You'll find both the necessary software and guides/tutorials to use them efficient.

IMG format easy

October 12 2002, 2:59 AM

Hi,

you can easily make subs for the Philips software from a DVD with SubRip, it make all the bmp's and let you change colours, change position, preview etc. It supports also several formats in output. I'm using it now to rip subs and insert they in my Philips toolkit project.
