I have used Ulead Media Studio 6.5 to produce an MPEG2 video file. My capture board is an Matrox Marvel G400. De basic file is MJPEG PAL in 704x576 full size best quality. In Ulead MS 6.5 the editting is done with the standard template for PAL SVCD, MPEG2 coding 480 x 576, 2550 KB/s, variable bit-rate, Field Order A, etc.
The resulting MPG file (after create in MS 6.5) is input for DVD Factory. So far so good, template etc. all works well. But the quality of the SVCD is not that good. Standard VHS is much better. The problem is not the quality of still frames, but in moving the camera sidewards and/or zoom in zoom out is very shakey. It's my first experience with burning SVCD's, so who will give me the golden hint for better (moving) quality??

First off, the Mpeg encoder for Ulead Media Studio Pro isn"t very good at all, Terrorable in fact, The stuttering effect durring movement sounds like you have the incorrect field order set...What i would do if I were you would be to not use the Mpeg Encoder in Ulead and render the movie to a High quality AVI file then encode that to Mpeg with a Good Mpeg Encoder like Tmpgenc or CCE, even though you might loose a bit of quality rendering to AVI and encodeing it will still look better than useing the "Ulead Media Studio" Encoder....
If you set the field order set incorrectly the movie will play on your TV with the stuttering effect that is very anoying..It tmpgenc Pluss when useing the Wizard it scans your file for the correct field order when you load your file in ,it takes about 15 seconds, then it set"s the field order to the correct setting...
When I use the newest version of Video studio I get considerably better quality SVCD in less time than TMpeg. I think these guys should try the newer version before they make these comments, they have obviously only used older versions.
Starting with the first inquiring message, I'm curious:
Are you using Ulead to capture or to reencode? Surely Matrox includes its own encoding software. If so, why are you not using that?
Secondly, although I agree that the Ulead encoder is not the greatest, my version in Video Studio 6 is entirely adequate to the task if my main movie has been encoded with the same template that I'm using in Ulead. In that case Ulead uses smart render to only reencode transitions, titles, etc.
As to field order, I'd question if that is the problem if the initial encode is taking place within Ulead. In that case it is deciding the field order, not reencoding it. If on the other hand he encoded with Matrox first, and then used Ulead to reencode that is a different story. I'll reread the post, but I didn't get that. It appeared that he was doing the initial encode from within Ulead.
Finally, without disputing the fact that initially encoding in AVI works, I have never needed to do that in order to circumvent jitter problems. I encode directly to MPEG 2, and do my editing in that format.
I think if you're doing very sophisticated editing that AVI makes sense, otherwise it seems like an unnesessary additional step.
No, I have the new "Mpeg Now" encoder for Ulead Media studio 6.5, and I am correct in saying the quality isn"t very good but I guess every one has there own standards, Mine are just very high....
