m2v vs mpv

does anyone know if the different extensions used in demuxing files are somehow incompatible, or simply product specific choices?

For instance Womble demuxes to .mpv/.mpa and TMPGEnc demuxes to .m2v/.m2a

Is there a diff? Can they be renamed with impunity?

Yes you can rename a mpv to a m2v, and mp2 to mpa..the same as you can rename a mpg file to a mpeg file...
