Beginner questions

OK, now i know my DVD player can play SVCD's i'm happy...now for making some.
I will read up on the ins and outs of the process at a later date but have some basic questions first!

1) I know a DVD is about 4.5GIG, if i simply want the film from this, am i right in thinking that if for arguments sake, it is 3GIG, this is how much room it will take on the hard drive when ripping it?
I say this because i am using a crumby old 433MHz with only a 6GIG hard drive...and as yet i dont own a DVD drive for my PC!!!! Is it worth me buying one or am i going to simply not have enough room? btw, the OS can be put on my second HD thus giving me all 6GIG for the copying process.
I intend on making SVCDs of good quality so any figures would be appreciated.

2) I have easy cd 5...is this OK for burning SVCDs?

yes 6 gig's should be alright for most movies, but it does depend on the movie. remember that a DVD can go up to 18 GB on a single Disk!

if you are concerned about space your should definetly learn how to "frame serve", if you don't already know. it lets you encode a dvd without haveing to use an intermedate file.

I'm sure lots of people can help your with frame serving on this forum.

personally i think 6 gigs should be good for most movies doing one at a time..........lol
As for using easy cd creator for burning svcd's i dont recommend it. i would rather get a copy of the latest version of nero and use that

For burning...

VCDeasy. It's a wonderful freeware program that can do almost anything you will need to do to author and burn disks. It's not the fastest nor does it have plugins for encoding, but the disks are great.
