I know a bit off the topic, but...

Recently I've been ripping a lot of live music dvds onto svcd with varying success due to iterlaced/deinterlaced nature of the beast...
Anyway to my question... from these recordings I also ripped audio and converted it to mp3 files which I want to play on my standalone dvd and car cd/mp3 player - however, I would like to burn the mp3 files to 90 minutes and 99 minute cdrs. I've been trying for a week now and all I can burn with nero is 700 meg. Is what I want to do possible?? Different software?? My apologies for being off the topic, but any help or links would be greatly appreciated.

You must enable overburning in Nero to be able to burn the 90 and 99 min CD-R discs. Also your CD-burner must support overburning to 90 min or 99 min. Only a few CD-Writer models support this. I know my Lite-On can burn these discs. I found this on the cdrinfo.com FAQ:

Question:
I use Nero 5.5 on Yamaha CRW8424s drive. Can I use 99min media?

Answer:
Yes, just make sure you have the latest firmware loaded for your recorder. Then go to Nero's FILE>PREFERENCES>EXPERT and enable Overburning, and set it to 89:30

I just wanted to add that you should realize that 90 and 99 minute CD-Rs violate CD standards and even after you get Nero to burn it, these discs may refuse to play in your car and DVD players. Then again they may work fine.
There are no guarantees with the 90 and 99 minute discs.
My burner will burn 90 minute CD-Rs and I have made audio CDs and SVCDs that worked fine using them, but the one time I used them to make a DivX disc, it burned without problems and then the very same drive that burned it refused to play it

Thanks for your response.
I'm afraid I've tried that and it works fine with svcd and audio cd - however I can not get nero with this setting to overburn in the normal cd rom option for software or MP3 etc. By burner does accept 99 min discks and they do play fine as svcd or audio cd.

Hi,

Lately I've been doing a lot of over-burning myself. I'm using various 99 minute (850 MB) CDR discs. In my case I'm doing a "hybride" DVD thing. Using a DVD authoring program to create DVD Title sets with SVCD frame sizes and DVD sound (48 Khz) To fit 45 minutes onto a disc with 3.6 Mb/s Video bit rate, I have to use these 99 minute discs .. and I end up right around 800 MB plus or minus.

The burner is very important. Some do over-burning better than others. I've had no problems with Nero and have always used the LG brand (Goldstar) CDR burners. They are touted as being very good at handling over-burning. This latest unit I'm testing is a 48x CDR and 16x CDRW. I don't think the shop is going to get it back. <grin> Anyway I've found out a couple things.

You have to be conservative with your burn speed. Some of the 90 and 99 minute CDRs may burn okay at 48x but not okay if you attempt to over-burn. The discs I'm using are supposedly rated at 24x. I get best results AT that speed or lower. When I go to 32x or higher problems happen. This could be due to the way a burner does it's thing. To be specific a burner burns from the inside of the disc outward to the outter edge. And from what I understand the actual burn speed is not the same throughout the disk. This is why they are careful to explain in manufacturer's parameters for both discs and bruners as ... speeds UP TO 48x. Anyway .. I suppose that when you get to the outer area of that disc, the actual speed is going to be pretty high. Ergo if you have a problem it'll be at the end of your recording.

All this is just my guess and not based on nnything other than practical experiance. Maybe a medium engineer can elaborate. All I know is that little LG burner I have burns from the very most inner ring right out to the tipity tip of the outer edge. I've never been able to get any kind of reliability with anything over about 810 MB. Even on a supposedly 850 Mb disc.

Jes my usual 2 cents. See the thread .. Rich waffles

Shoot .. sometimes I get off on a tangent and loose track of everything. Sorry .. I MEANT to mention this in my long winded ramblings.

I have several programs (like DVD authoring) that will do a direct burn from within the program to a CDR or DVD etc. I've found that almost ALL of the programs that do their own independant burning are not set up to do over-burning. They can be locked in to a set maximum.

I find that most programs like that have the ability to also burn an image or in the case of a DVD a title set.

Then you can use Nero with it's over-burning capability to burn that image or title set. Sorry if I rambled .. I'm old and I tend to wander. Uh ... now what the heck was I talking about ???
