Capturing video using audio/video RCA cables

I have the Pinnacle Linx Video Input Cable. It also included Studio 7 software. The question is can you capture video at a higher size then 320 x 240? I am trying to capture home video from old video tapes and sony super 8 tapes to convert to either vcd or svcd, but when I do I can only get about a half hour on CD and the quality is not that great. I was also wondering about DVD writers but if my quality will not get better it will not be a purchase. An suggestion on what to get or use to capture old home videos convert them to a format that the quality is as good as VHS that I can play on my DVD player?
Thanks for any help that someone can give.

Probably not... VHS source is HELL. Capture at your target res even if its higher than you need just to save encoding time. Get the DVD burner because you LOVE THIS STUFF!!!! You better since this is still a very very quirky, hugely time-consuming, buggy, difficult terrain you've started upon. Don't believe the boxes.

But it's getting better... in 2-5 years it will be as easy as recording sound and burnind CDs are today.

Are you saying that you can only capture at 320+240?? If this is true I feel Very sory for you that you paid that kind of money on sometimg that Bad..I use a $30 PCI Capture Card that captures at max 756+576 and the Quality is Well ...OK Comeing from a VHS Source If I capture from Good Quality VHS Tapes they Look pretty Good , and I use Gold Plated Double insulated RCA Cables and a Video Stabilazer which really helps with the Picture Quality..i upuntill rescently Had a Simular USB Set up like yours But Mine was a Hauppaggue and it would only capture at a max of 352+240 and I paid Close to $200 for it and realized when it was too late that it was a Piece of crap and My New cheapo Card has 5 times better Quality with Much less CPU Usage....

I guess it would depend on What Kind of money you want to spend and if you want to go digital Or Analog...I use a Cheapo ATI TV Wonder that was about $30 and I get fairly good Quality from good VHS Tapes and when useing Genaric drivers It Can capture at higher than DVD Resolutions...Go Here:http://dvguide.sharbor.com/head-to-head/ there are some good comparisons of different capture cards...
