Authoring more than can fit on DVD5

Have some DV footage that is 5.8 Gb + audio after compression to DVD mpeg2

How to author it over two DVD5?
Can ie. Maestro create two folders during authoring?

Or is it easier to split the mpeg2 file during encode in Procoder?

Well you have 2 choices..You can cut the Mpeg file into 2 parts and put it on 2 Disks or you can lower the bitrate by 20% and fit it all on 1 disk..If you use a Quite high bitrate then this would be the best option..

Cutting

And which tool is the best for DVD compliant mpeg2 cutting?

Seb
PS
Pity the authoring software (or maybe I just do not know) does not auto output to 2 DVD(-R)

I have used M2-Edit Pro version 4 to sucsessfully cut and edit a mpeg2 file to fit a single DVD-R without reencoding.

I had problems with Womble mpeg2vcr. Well it worked but it changed some flags in the mpeg header and I didn't like that. I haven't tried the latest version though.

Seb....
I think you could use Ifoedit to split over 2 DVD-R. It will do it on ripped VOB's from DVD-9 so I imagine it would work with your file.Just author it with whatever software as 1 file, save the title set, then open it up in Ifoedit and Click on "VOB Extras" and then select " split on 2 DVD-R" . I haven't tried myself yet, but it should work.

Good solution

Well done. It will certainly work. But there must be something that does authoring straight to two layers (how otherwise would the original media be authored?)

Not sure about that.....perhaps since commercial DVD's are " pressed " not "burned" might have something to do with the dual layer authoring thing. Just a shot in the dark.....

Dual Layer Production

December 4 2002, 4:53 AM

Hi all,

been away a while, missed anything good around here ?

Anyhoo,

An overview of the production method would be that once all of the "assets" are ready, (video, menus, stills etc), they are authored using something like the commercial production tool Scenarist, (this is the bit you all know)
Now, in scenarist you can output to DLT or other ready for dual layer. The file size is different. At the repro/stamping factory they now press the information into two layers on the production line, this is why you can't - yet - make a DVD9 at home, there is currently no way to make a disk that can have two layers, maybe someone will crack this eventually with a two tone dye sublimation layer which could allow the laser diode to burn one layer then the other but even where it feasible I think Hollywood would squish the idea at birth since you could then really clone DVD releases !!
