For home user SpruceUp or DVDit! (maybe Maestro, but this is more towards pro)

Definately not DVDit - it may be easy but it will transcode your mpegaudio to lpcm taking forever, taking up more space and sometimes ruining synch in the process. Stay far far away from any of the DVDit line of software.

Spruceup is good yes. Straightforward and does work with mpegaudio. A litle slow when importing clips due to the verification, and dont have all the functionality one might want - but for a start its good.

If we talk userfriendlynes and functionality versus price - DVD-workshop from Ulead has to be todays winner. This does almost everything one can wish for, accepts different resolutions, accepts ac3 audio, mpegaudio, lpcmaudio, does moving menus, have some nice templates - and are very forgiving when importing mpegs. The pricetag is perhaps a litle to high for the beginner - but on the other hand get this and you really dont need any other.

If you need to work more advanced with several different audiotracks and separate subtitles you need to go to software like Maestro - more expensive and more difficult to work with. This is good but definately not for the beginner.

I agree that DVD Workshop is probably the best for the beginner cuz it is Very user friendly and easy to learn and is an overall well rounded program for a Beginner and even the more advanced user...DVDit is Quite picky with the Mpeg files it will allow you to import, I"ve been useing "Sonic DVD Producer" which is the Kats Ass when it comes to DVD Authoring But it is Very expensive about $4500.00....

I think DvdIt PE is the best choice for a beginner.
It's easy and it gives consistent results.
Only be careful to feed it with non multiplexed
streams; audio should be linear PCM (aka .wav).
The manual is also very good.
