Just got the Sony DRU500A, program recommendations?

This burner has come with Sonic My DVD & Record Now.
I`ve been using TMPGenc for my SVCD`s, what is your program suggestions for both encoding and authoring DVD`s.

I`ve only done 2 discs so far with no probs, 1 DVD+RW created with My DVD (worked fine on my stand alone), and 1 data DVD-R with which I used Record Now.

Thanks for any input, Dazz.

Make sure you keep us posted on how good this drive is. I am looking to order one, but as always I am very suspicious and want some reviews from people who actually use them, not the guys peddling them.

Not sure about apps, it depends on what you are looking to do, but I do know that Ulead has a pretty decent suite of apps that have an improved MPEG2 encoder. TMPGEnc is still in the top 5 though and depending on what kind of menus and what level of difficulty in authoring is going to decide for you. I tried some of the high end authoring tools, but they just made my head hurt. SpruceDVD was the only one that I really liked, but they were bought out but Apple and left to waste away. If you look around hard enough it is floating around out there. I really haven't spent much time on video lately, real busy but I am looking to start back up. A new toy would be a good start.

What I use Is CCE SP for Mpeg2 encodeing and "Sonic DVD Producer" for DVD Authoring But DVD Producer is Much to expensive for the regular guy to afford Cuz it runs at about $4500 US, But Ulead DVD Workshop is a Good Beginner DVD Authoring Program But the Proper Crack for it might be hard to find But I can send it to you If you want it...there are also Quite a Lot of Good Authoring programs that Produce good Quality Just Don"t Use any RoXio Products Cuz they are the worst there is......

Just got the Sony DRU500A, program recommendations?

December 20 2002, 2:55 PM

Hi,
I got one a week ago. The driver performing is good. I have made a DVD-movie with DVDit, (very easy prog), and also burned data in DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, CD-R and CD-RW. Also burned some ripped movies using Nero as data DVD. I'm still looking for compatible media for this driver. I have some concerns about it.

1- Memorex DVD-R is burned very good, ( I have burned 6) and movies are played like the original on standalone Apex 660, however, the DRU500A doesn't read back the disc sometimes. This is happening only with the Memorex.

2- K Hypermedia DVD-R is not compatible with this driver, (or are defective). I have burned 5 of then and Nero gets an error at the same point: 53%.

Now I'm waiting for some cheap media like Princo, etc to test and find the right media for it.

TDK DVD-RW is compatible. I have erased and burned again about 10 times one disc and no problems.
Sony DVD+RW same thing, but they are very expensive.

I also have updated to firmware f.

Keep us informed of your experiences. I think it will be helpful to share what do and don't about the DRU500A. Overall, I think the driver is very good. I was looking around between this, HP200i and Pioneer A04. A04 is too slow, and I had have some bad experiences with HP products, so I make the decision for the Sony.
I'm satisfied with my decision.

Good Look!

Bill

All good

December 21 2002, 7:05 AM

I previously had some difficulty with DVD-R`s on my stand alone player.

It turns out in was an operater error (oops), since this particular DVD-R was authored by a friend it did not simply start with the play button. All I had to do was press menu to get things going.
This was an exact copy of an original and quality was perfect.

So the end result now is(all but 1 DVD movies)-
DVD+R x1
DVD+RW x2
DVD-R x1
DVD-RW x 2
DVD-R (data only) x1

All have so far burnt and worked well. I use Laser discs (cheapies).

No problems at all with the sony DRU500A.

Thanks guys.
