I have a Creative Audigy Sound Card with a Firewire input. While I can transfer and edit the video I am concerned that I may have a problem of quality in this process. Are there better cards or do they comply and provide the same quality standard of avi's. I am getting a fishbone effect on fast moving objects particularly when they are bright contrasting colours. Is it my camera. Please help this beginner.

The firewire card is just a mean of transportation. It transfers data from (among others) digital camera. Therefore, it does not affect the quality of the data being transefered.
All this is subject to the speed of your computer, hard disks, and the DV codec you use.

That "FishBone" effect you are getting is from the Source being Interlaced and those lines are "Interlace Lines" you can either use a De-Interlace filter or just leave it alone Cuz they Shouldn"t show up on your TV Cuz your TV is Made for Displaying Interlaced Footage and your Monitor is Not..
