Problems with Burning Avi'd as DvD-Video

Hey guys. Just got a DvD burner for christmas, and happen to have an version of Fellowship of the Ring in AVI format.

Well, I wanted to burn this AVI to a DvD Video, and a bunch of software came with the package. Try to bear with me:

Tried using NeoDvD to burn it and theres no sound in the preview, nor in the finished burnt version.

I also have Nero, which will let me burn a DvD-Video, but the browser comes up with two directories under the DVDVIDEO1 (the DVD-R) called VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. I have no clue what these mean so I looked in the manual, said that the .VFO, .IFO and .BUP files needed to get into the VIDEO directory and that they are provided by my DvD-authoring software. Said nothing more. I found that quite a vague description as I dont know what THAT is either.

If someone could help me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

You Can NOT Burn an AVI as a DVD..DVD has to be In Mpeg2 format and has to have certain Charicteristics that make it DVD Compliant, you can not Burn any File to a DVD and have it play..and with Nero you have to have a Mpeg2 file formated to a Video-TS Folder to burn to a DVD...What you need to do is Encode the AVI file to a DVD Compliant Mpeg2 file then you can use a DVD Authoring program to Format the Mpeg2 file and add Chapters and menu"s and then Burn it to Disk..Makeing DVD"s isn"t as easy as Burning a File to a disk there is a lot of work before you can actually play the movie....

Hmmm....that actually helps out a bit.

Just to reiterate,

I used NeoDvD (not NERO) to burn an AVI movie as a DvD (Neo is very..ummm..."Too" user-friendly, like a program built for idiots. Came with the DvD burner).
Well, it worked, just without sound -- Played it on my REAL DvD player and everything.

Now, if THAT is the reason youre referring to as "YOu cannot burn AVI's to DvD, then great, okay, that makes me feel more comfortable about what I bought. I just got my hands on the MPEG-2/SVCD plugin for Nero.

If I use Nero Express, with the installed plugin, could I THEN burn an AVI to DvD Video? or would I still need something else?

YOur help is great, I loathe sounding like a noob.

Well you aren"t Burning an AVI you are Burning a Mpeg file..The AVI Gets encoded to mpeg so it can be burned..I have Neo DVD and it is a Piece of Crap for Encodeing Quality But the Nero Mpeg Plugin is The Worst thing for encodeing Files to Mpeg...If you want to encode AVI to Mpeg with actual DVD Quality (That is if the AVI is of DVD Quality)then Use a Program that is Made for encodeing Cuz Mpeg encoders aren"t created equal..A Good one for someone that is a Newbie is "Tmpgenc" you can Download it at "http://www.tmpgenc.net/" it will encode Very high quality Mpeg files..The reason why you didn"t get any Audio from the One you did with NeoDVD is Cuz the audio in the AVI file was Probably AC3 which not many Programs can decode, in Which case you would have to extract the audio to WAV Format and use that as the Audio source, you can do this with a program Called "AVI-Mux"..There are No Good Single Program solutions for Makeing DVD/VCD/SVCD"s from an AVI file to a Burnt Disk in One Program..You usually need a Few Programs and some Understanding of How Digital Video is Made up and the Different Formats of video and audio and there specifications....
