DVD2AVI can do this. It's really designed for DVDs, but it's not that tough to make it work on SVCD.

Is there anything in particular I need to do to make it work? I'm a bit of a n00b at this, altho I have done DVD convers using DVD2AVI.....

I don't think so. I think it understands any MPEG-2 video file. http://www.vcdhelp.com has guides on converting SVCD to AVI, but you probably won't need them.
