I am having audio sync problems with all the svcds i have burned I am using nero to burn with and tmpengc to encode i have read that possible causes are incorrect bitrate or even to fast of a burn speed i have tried adjusting both with no luck . I would like to know how to determine the best bitrate setting . I am hoping this will do the trick.

I'm having this problem with Replay mpegs

February 23 2003, 7:39 PM

I'm not sure that this is related to your problem, but I am noticing a problem as I try to encode ReplayTV mpegs into SVCD. I believe Replay mpegs (and maybe other methods of capture) have timecode gaps in them.

I don't know if this is a fix or not, but "pmcniell" on the AVS Replay Forum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=208133&perpage=20&pagenumber=3) has shared a fix-time program to correct time gaps that are related to GOP (Group of Picture) errors in the Replay mpeg. BTW, these GOPs are what are used to remove commercials, and there are utilities available that will automatically edit out commercials from TV program mpegs without requiring lossy re-encoding.

I've tried this fix-time utility on one Replay movie, and it helped significantly on the audio synch, but by the end of the 90 minute movie, the audio still lagged by about 75 milliseconds.

Can someone please tell me the easy way to re-mux the audio to the video while making up this 75/90 ms/min?

Thanks,

Tim

MPEG2VCR (also often called "Womble", although that is really the name of the company, not the product) has an option in multiplexing that allows you to move sound forwards or backwards by specified amounts. This will fix your problem. Unfortunately, MPEG2VCR costs $249 US, so you either have to pay big money to get it or find a cracker site that has it. The company's web page is http://www.womble.com if you are interested.

Womble doesn't solve problem by itself

February 24 2003, 9:35 AM

Unfortunately, the guys using Womble in the aforementioned Replay forum are experiencing the same synching problem. It seems that Womble is simply allowing them to edit out commercials and perform the GOP fix (I've got a free utility that does the GOP fix). They seem to be suggesting the use of VirtualDub-MPEG2 to query the mismatch and then CoolEdit 2000 to stretch/squeeze the audio as necessary. They don't have to re-encode at all because they are burning straight to DVD.

I have the added challenge of re-encoding/compressing to SVCD, and it doesn't appear that any of them are doing that.

On my old computer I believe I still have a copy of SoundForge. I wonder if it will do what I need?

BeSweet appears to be able to stretch/compress audio

February 26 2003, 12:29 PM

I found this nifty little program in the DVD2SVCD bundle called BeSweet. There's even a GUI app to act as a front-end for this command line program.

http://dspguru.doom9.org/

It not only transcodes audio between formats (AC3 to MP2, etc), but it has an option for start-delay (in milliseconds) and framerate adjustments among other things. The framerate adjustment (Change Frame Rate from ___ to ___) is set up so it looks like you can use numbers right out of VirtualDub's frame rate readout.

I'll update after I give it a try tonight.

So far BeSweet is not helping at all

February 26 2003, 6:59 PM

I've made about 6 attempts to get a good transcoded audio file adjusted to match the video, but to no avail. All I'm getting is chattering audio. Either I'm doing something wrong or it can't be done like it appeared.

Hi,

Stop looking for Cure. Look for Cause.
Dropped frames will spoil audio-sync.

P.S. Try CCE, MC-endcoder or LSX for encoding.

How do you spot dropped frames?

I am using CCE. How do I spot dropped frames?
